TEMECULA ---- A daylong celebration of Temecula Valley history is on tap for this weekend.
Riverside County, the Vail Ranch Restoration Association and the Temecula Valley Arts Council are going to present the second annual Historic Vail Ranch Celebration to the community on Saturday.
The event will take place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on a 4-acre site near Highway 79 South and Redhawk Parkway. Six buildings have been preserved and restored on the historic ranch site, including the Wolf Store, oldest building in the valley and once the headquarters for the sprawling Vail Ranch. Vail was one of the largest cattle ranches in California.
The celebration will feature a re-enactment of the march by a Mormon battalion through the area in 1847, mock gunfights put on by the Old Town Temecula Gunfighters and a performance by the Spanish Dancers. Some of the marchers will be descendants of those who came through the area more than a century and a half ago.
There will be demonstrations by wood carvers, sheep shearers, basket weavers, blacksmiths and rope makers. There will be music by the Wolf Valley Musicians and Los Cancioneros.
Members of the Ramona Pageant cast are scheduled to attend and share a scene from the popular drama held every spring in Hemet. Local authors Rick Busenkell and Phil Brigandi will be on hand to sign copies of their books. Brigandi wrote "Temecula At the Crossroads of History" and Busenkell wrote "Wolf Valley," a mystery novel.
Admission and parking are free. Donations may be made to the Vail Ranch Restoration Association.
