Bessie Bush, 84


SPRINGDALE, Ark. -- Bessie Mae Bush, 84, died Sunday, Feb. 23, 2003, in Fayetteville, Ark., of natural causes.


Born May 28, 1918, in Orrville, Ohio, she lived in Springdale for 12 years. She was a member of Forever Young Social Club, Retirees Social Pinochle Club, St. Raphael's Senior Club, Thursday Applegate Social Club, Monday Night Bridge Club and Rogers Monday Social Pinochle Club.


Mrs. Bush was preceded in death by her husband, Leland Bush, in 1997, sisters Rose Wilkerson and Ruth Reitenbach, both in 1997; and son Arthur Bush, in 2003. She is survived by her sons, Russell Leroy Bush of Fallbrook and George Randall Bush of Springdale; daughter Nancy Lee Copelin of San Marcos; brother Leroy Boss of Dover, Del.; 17 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.


A private cremation is planned.

Arthur Bush, 68


YUCCA VALLEY -- Arthur Dean Bush, 68, died Friday, Feb. 14, 2003, at High Desert Medical Center in Joshua Tree of natural causes.


Born Jan. 30, 1935, in Fredricksburg, Ohio, he lived in Yucca Valley for 30 years. He lived in Fallbrook previously. He retired after 33 years as a federal firefighter. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge 802, the Order of the Eastern Star and Alaska Shrine.


Mr. Bush was preceded in death by his father, Leland P. Bush, in 1997. He is survived by his wife of 34 years, Lucile L. Bush of Yucca Valley; mother Bessie M. Bush of Springdale, Ark.; sons Joel Bush of Santee, Richard Norris of Wichita, Kan., and Ronald Norris of Lakewood, Colo.; daughters and sons-in-law Laura and Tyrone Bush Bon Trager of Ioiawatha, Iowa, and Barbara and Bobb Nielsen of Wichita, Kan.; brothers and sister-in-law Russell L. and Phyllis J. Bush of Fallbrook and Randy Bush of Springdale, Ark.; sister and brother-in-law Nancy and Joe Copelin of San Marcos; eight grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.


A memorial service was held on Wednesday, Feb. 19, at the Yucca Valley Masonic Lodge 802 with Von Brown officiating. A private cremation is planned.

Ruth Nemec, 91


OCEANSIDE -- Ruth Nemec, 91, died Friday, Feb. 21, 2003, at Tri-City Medical Center of pneumonia and multiple complications of a fall at home.


Born April 17, 1911, in Wahoo, Neb., she lived in Oceanside for 29 years. She retired in February 1974 as a registered nurse. She was a volunteer nurse at two Oceanside senior centers for more than 25 years.


Mrs. Nemec was preceded in death by her husband, Theodore L. Nemec, on Dec. 27, 1979; and grandchild Kristen Diane Nemec, in 1997. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Richard and Constance Nemec of Los Angeles; daughter and son-in-law Stephanie and Carl Fletcher Metten of Shell Beach; and grandchildren Mark Nemec, Amy Waunch and Khia Dozier-Nemec.


A Mass will be celebrated at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, March 1, at Mission San Luis Rey Chapel, 4070 Mission Ave. in Oceanside with the Rev. Tommy officiating.

MURRIETA -- Felicitas Murillo, 44, died Wednesday, Feb. 19, 2003, at her home.


Born Nov. 18, 1958, in Tijuana, she lived in Murrieta for five months. She was a homemaker.


Mrs. Murillo was preceded in death by her father, Pedro Amador and brother Peter Amador. She is survived by her husband of 16 years, Carlos Murillo of Murrieta; mother Teresa Amador of Vista; son Christopher Murillo of Murrieta; daughter Lilly Quiroz of Vista; brothers and sisters-in-law Bobby and Silvia Amador and Juan and Margarita Amador, all of Vista; and sisters and brothers-in-law Norma and Michael Albert of Vista, Sofia and Eddie Arnold of Vista, Maria and Victor Saavedra of Oceanside, Maria and Jorge Ulloa of San Diego and Margarita and Jose Castaneda of Vista.

SAN MARCOS -- Roger Teed Jacobs, 81, died Wednesday, Feb. 19, 2003, in Escondido.


Born Dec. 9, 1921, in Brooklyn, N.Y., he lived in San Diego County for 52 years. He was a chemistry teacher for Escondido Union High School District for 54 years.


Mr. Jacobs was preceded in death by his son, Henri Jacobs. He is survived by his daughters and son-in-law Jan and Charles James of Maryland, and Betsy Jacobs of New York; brother Kerwin Jacobs of Idaho; and several grandchildren.


No services will be held at the request of the deceased. Inurnment will take place at the Jacobs and Teed Cemetery in Trout Creek, N.Y.

She was born May 5, 1915, in Macon, Mo. She was a homemaker.


Mrs. Gaines was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Y. Gaines, on Dec. 27, 1989. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Linda Gaines of Lewisburg, Pa.; daughters and sons-in-law Carol Anne and Roy Wagner of McCall, Idaho, and Mary and Larry Maves of Newport Beach; grandchildren Lori, Joshua, Megan and Robbie; and one great-grandchild.

James Doan, 73


ESCONDIDO -- James Cochran Doan, 73, died Friday, Feb. 14, 2003, in Poway.


Born Dec. 23, 1929, in Hollywood, he lived in Escondido for 17 years. He was a stock trader specialist and a professional tennis player. He was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon (SAE) and Meadow Lake Country Club. He graduated from UC Berkeley. He was a captain on the Cal Berkeley Basketball Team of 1952.


Mr. Doan is survived by his companion, Anita Montgomery of Escondido; daughter Kathy J. Garcia of Bloomington; sons James C. Doan Jr., Eric H. Doan and George L. Doan, all of San Diego; brother Latimer E. Doan IV of San Marino; and grandchildren David, Steven, Michael, Richard and James.


A funeral service will take place at 3 p.m. Saturday, March 1, at Hidden Meadows Community Center Pavilion in Escondido.

Jean McLaughlin, 84


RANCHO BERNARDO -- Jean Campbell McLaughlin, 84, died Saturday, Feb. 15, 2003, of congestive heart failure.


Born Aug. 27, 1918, in Norristown, Pa., she lived in Rancho Bernardo since 1978. She was an avid supporter of healthcare in the community. Palomar Pomerado Health Foundation recognizes her and her husband, Matthew, as Visionaries because of their support of Pomerado Hospital. Their gifts include the McLaughlin Emergency Cardiac Center and the Fluoroscopy Suite at Pomerado Hospital and the establishment of the Nursing Scholarship Fund to help educate future nurses.


Mrs. McLaughlin received the Philanthropist of the Year award in 2001 from the Elizabeth Hospice. She was a member of the San Diego Zoological Society since 1979, where she supported the Veterinary Hospital at the Wild Animal Park.


She volunteered at several local senior homes and charitable organizations. She was a volunteer at the Assistance League of Escondido Valley, the Rancho Bernardo Garden Club, and the Friends of the Rancho Bernardo Library. She supported the Escondido Humane Society and the Boys & Girls Club of Escondido.


Donations may be made in her name to the Assistance League of Escondido Valley, PO Box 3185, Escondido, CA 92033.


Her cremains were scattered at sea by the Neptune Society.

ENCINITAS -- Elsie Harris, 92, died Thursday, Feb. 20, 2003.


Born Jan. 15, 1911, in Altus, Okla., she lived in Encinitas for four years. She was a member of the Seventh-day Adventist Church.


Mrs. Harris was preceded in death by her husband, Everett Harris, on Sept. 5, 1995.


She is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law Joe and Nina Parsons, Frank and Betty Parsons of Chula Vista and Bobby and Penny Parsons of Alexandra, Va.; daughter and son-in-law Cecelia Parsons and Clifford Moore of Encinitas; sister and brother-in-law Elva and Eugene Woods of Fort Worth, Texas; 11 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.

Born Sept. 13, 1914, in Weber, Kan., she lived in Escondido for 84 years.


Mrs. Bent was preceded in death by her husband, Crawford Bent, in 1970. She is survived by her sister, Lillian Helene McCalister of Escondido; niece Jackey Woodward of Escondido; and nephew Stanley Bend III of California.

Harry Matthews, 81


ESCONDIDO -- Harry "Kid" Matthews, 81, died Friday, Feb. 21, 2003, at Meadowview in his sleep.


Born Dec. 9, 1921, in Emmett, Idaho, he lived in Escondido for one year. He retired in 1984 from Harry "Kid" Matthews rental business. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the Philippines. He was a world boxing contender in the light, middle and heavyweight divisions. He is listed in the Guinness Book of Records for the longest winning streak, 200 fights won and only seven losses.


Mr. Matthews was preceded in death by his wife, Delores Matthews, in 1993. He is survived by his son, Ron of Everett, Wash.; daughters and sons-in-law Pat and Ken of Menifee, Connie of Oceanside, Debby and Loren of Everett and Carol of Huntington Beach; grandchildren Matt, Mark, Michelle, Tom, Marla, Nicole, Frank, Anthony and Sarah; and eight great-grandchildren.

FALLBROOK -- Marciano Gonzales Jr., 62, died Friday, Feb. 21, 2003, of cardiac arrest.


He was born Dec. 20, 1940, in Primera, Texas. He retired after 30 years from Fallbrook Union Elementary School District.


He served in the U.S. Marine Corps. He received a bachelor's degree in history from UCSD and a teaching credential from UC Santa Cruz and SDSU. He was a member of St. Peter's Catholic Church. He was a past member of the Knights of Columbus. He was a volunteer for the Fallbrook Land Conservancy and at the Fallbrook Library as a story teller to children.


Mr. Gonzales is survived by his wife of 38 years, Maria Gonzales of Fallbrook; parents Clara R. and Marciano Gonzales Sr. of Primera, Texas; sons Marciano Gonzales III of Fallbrook and Joe Gonzales of Vista; daughter and son-in-law Celeste and Michael Hostler of Grass Valley; brothers Gilbert, Hector and Omar Gonzales; and sisters Lane, Rosa, Delia, Naomi, Ruth and Sandra.


A vigil service will be held at 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 28, at St. Peter's Catholic Church with the Rev. Manuel Villarreal officiating. A Mass will be celebrated at 9 a.m. Saturday, March 1, at St. Peter's Catholic Church, 450 S. Stagecoach Lane in Fallbrook with the Rev. Bud Kaicher officiating. ESCONDIDO -- Theodore Jeffrey Sparks, 40, died Monday, Feb. 17, 2003, at his home.


He was born Dec. 11, 1962, in Fort Belvoir, Va., He graduated in 1981 from Fallbrook High School, where he lettered in cross country running and track. He attended Palomar College and CSU Fresno.


Mr. Sparks was preceded in death by his father, William F. Sparks, in April 1993. He is survived by his mother, Genevieve Sparks of Temecula; brothers and sister-in-law William and Gretchen Sparks of Bellaire, Texas, and James Sparks of Escondido; sister Janet Sparks of Capitola; and many nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Christoffelsz was preceded in death by her husband, Denzil Christoffelsz. She is survived by her son, Darryl; daughters Diane and Lynne; grandchild Alexis; and three great-grandchildren.

CARLSBAD -- Lee O. Graham, 85, died Friday, Feb. 21, 2003, at Scripps Hospital in Encinitas.


Born Sept. 22, 1917, in Boulder, Colo., he lived in Carlsbad for 18 years. He retired after 32 years with the U.S. Postal Service. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.


Mr. Graham is survived by his wife of 62 years, Virginia Graham of Carlsbad; son and daughter-in-law Patrick and Joanne Graham of Rolling Hills; daughter and son-in-law Gayle and Ken Lusher of Escondido; brother and sister-in-law Norman and Mary Graham of Fresno; and four grandchildren.

Ernest "Newell" Martin Jr., 87, died Tuesday, Feb. 18, 2003, in Escondido.


Born Aug. 11, 1915, in Escondido of the pioneer families Asmus and Martin, he lived here most of his life. His family resided in the San Diego area for over 100 years. He was an inventor with numerous patents, including the first hot coffee, cocoa and ice tea vending machines.


He was a pilot and an aerodynamics enthusiast. He enjoyed gardening. He belonged to the Toastmasters Society and the Lions Club.


He is preceded in death by his daughter, Diane R. Roick, grandson Don M. Martin Jr. of Escondido; sisters Barbara Wolf, Margret Day of Washington, and Doris Gillett of Escondido; and great-grandson Jeremy Martin of Redding, Calif.


He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Annie M. Martin of Escondido; brother Robert A. Martin of Bonners Ferry, Idaho; sons and daughters-in-law Richard Newell and Jackie F. Martin and Don M. Martin and Rebecca A. Sullivan-Martin of San Marcos; daughter Kathleen Y. Kirkendall of Escondido; grand-children Homer Newell Martin of Escondido, Eva M. Martin of Medford, Oregon, Brenda J.
