Arthur Lenfers, 84




FALLBROOK - Arthur W. Lenfers, 84, died Saturday, June 14, 2003.


Born Aug. 13, 1918, in Evansville, Ind., he lived in Fallbrook for 80 years.


He retired as the owner of Lenfers Septic Tanks for 30 years and New & Nearly New Thrift Shop in Fallbrook for four years.


He served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the European Theater and received the Purple Heart Medal.


He was a lifetime member of the Fallbrook Historical Society.


He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1924 in Fallbrook and the Escondido Disabled American Veterans Post 70.


Mr. Lenfers was preceded in death by his son, Michael Lenfers, in 1999.


He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Shirley Lenfers of Fallbrook; son and daughter-in-law Gary and Tiffany Lenfers of Warner Springs; stepson and daughter-in-law Bill and Vickie Blacklidge of Spokane, Wash.; daughter Sherri Lenfers of Fallbrook; sister Hilda Hroch of Fallbrook; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.


A graveside service with military honors is scheduled for 11 a.m. Saturday, June 21, at Fallbrook Masonic Cemetery with the Rev. David Plank officiating.


A private cremation is planned.

Mona Bergman, 90




VISTA - Mona Walsh Bergman, 90, died Sunday, June 15, 2003, at Palomar Medical Center in Escondido.


Born Nov. 10, 1912, in Lake County, Ill., she lived in Vista for 29 years. She was a homemaker. She was a member of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, where she was in the altar and rosary society.


Mrs. Bergman was preceded in death by her husband, Edward Bergman; son Kurt Bergman; and daughter Patricia Kirby.


She is survived by her sons, Michael Bergman of Grayslake, Ill., Paul Bergman of Belvidere, Ill., and John Bergman of Long Grove, Ill.; daughters Andree Bergman of Vista, Christina Rader of San Diego and Mona Cioffi of Berkley, Mich.; sisters Gabrielle Leonardi of Illinois, Beatrice Kruse of San Bernardino and Virginia Janitchek of Washington; 21 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.


Visitation is scheduled from 5 to 8 p.m. with vigil service at 7 p.m. today, June 18, at Allen Bros. Mortuary, Vista Chapel.


A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 2 p.m. Thursday, June 19, at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Vista with the Rev. Brendan McKeever officiating.


Interment will be at Ascension Cemetery in Libertyville, Ill.

Robert Whaley, 72




OCEANSIDE - Robert Arland Whaley, 72, died Wednesday, June 11, 2003, at Rancho Vista Health Care.


Born Oct. 31, 1930, in Salinas, he lived in Oceanside for 40 years.


He retired from the San Diego Police Department. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force.


Mr. Whaley is survived by his sons and daughters-in-law, Patrick Whaley of Phoenix, Steven and Bonnie Whaley of Blythe and Russell and Laney Whaley of Chandler, Ariz.; daughters and sons-in-law Kathleen and Hal Simmons of Cocolalla, Idaho, and Janet and Jerry Swanson of Danbury, Conn.; brother and sister-in-law Richard and Marilyn Whaley of Vista; and six grandchildren.


Viewing is scheduled from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday, June 19, at Eternal Hills Mortuary.


A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, June 20, at St. Anne's Episcopal Church, 701 West St. in Oceanside with the Rev. Dr. S. Anthony Baron officiating. Burial will follow at Eternal Hills Memorial Park.

VISTA - Michele Marie Rodriguez, 34, died Saturday, June 14, 2003.


Born July 13, 1968, in Redwood City, she lived in Vista for 25 years.


Ms. Rodriguez is survived by her mother, Maureen Mary Rodriguez of Shady Valley, Tenn.; father Frank Paul Rodriguez of Modesto; son Dean Nicholas Cobian of Oceanside; daughters Amanda Leigh Cobian of Oceanside and Brittany Megan Martinez of Vista; and brother John Anthony Rodriguez of Vacaville.


Rosary will be recited with Mass celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday, June 20, at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, 525 W. Vista Way in Vista with the Rev. Victor Maristela officiating.

ENCINITAS - Pamela Kaye :Froggie" Murray, 47, died Thursday, June 12, 2003, at her home.


Born Sept. 15, 1955, in Napa, she lived in Encinitas for three years. She worked for MHS Inc.


Ms. Murray is survived by her companion of three years, Karen Lynn Murray of Encinitas; sons Steven Rolf Murray and Michael Lee Murray, both of Encinitas; and daughter Sarah Ashley Murray of Encinitas.


A celebration of life will be held at 4:30 p.m. Monday, June 23, at Encinitas Moonlight Beach Overlook. A private cremation is planned.

Teresa O'Connell, 93




CARLSBAD - Teresa R. O'Connell, 93, died Friday, June 13, 2003, at her home.


Born May 22, 1910, in Wood's Cross, Utah, she lived in North County for 14 years. She retired after 33 years as a college teacher and counselor for Compton College.


Mrs. O'Connell was preceded in death by her husband, James O'Connell, in 1998.


She is survived by her nieces, Andrea and husband, John Hampshire of Salt Lake City and Kathryn Redford of Oakland; and great-nieces Jan Redford of San Diego and Jan Fraser of Soda Springs, Idaho.


A graveside service is scheduled for 1 p.m. today, June 18, at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Glendale.

Tom Lasswell, 71




PORTLAND, Ore. - Tom Lasswell, 71, died Friday, June 6, 2003.


He was born March 8, 1932, in Chicago. He graduated from Escondido High School in 1951, Palomar College in 1954 and San Diego State University in 1956.


He received a Bachelor of Divinity from the University of Chicago in 1959 and a Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Oregon in 1982.


He served in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean War. He was a pastor for the United Church of Christ churches in Lemon Grove, Medicine Lake, Mont., and Froid, Mont.


He was a campus minister at the University of Northern Colorado at Greeley and California State University at Northridge. He taught at North Bend, Ore., and Bandon, Ore., high schools.


He was the director of theater and professor of fine arts at the University of Portland. He acted at the Globe Theatre in San Diego, New York City, Los Angeles, Colorado and Portland. He acted in films.


The Rev. Lasswell was preceded in death by his father, Truman Lasswell.


He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Mary Lee Johnson Lasswell of Portland; mother Mildred Lasswell of Portland; sons Michael Lasswell of Chicago and Patrick Lasswell of Portland; daughter and son-in-law Kate and Eric Meisfjord of Spokane, Wash.; sister Jane Sharp of Washington; and grandchildren Thomas, Maryalice and Sam Meisfjord.





Yvonne Burden, 61




VISTA "" Yvonne E. Brown Burden, 61, died Thursday, June 12, 2003, at Tri-City Medical Center of heart failure.


Born Jan. 10, 1942, in Rock Hall, Md., she lived in Vista for 35 years. She was an electronics assembler for Unysis.


She was a member of the Elks Lodge Star Temple 1141 and Arron Chapel Methodist Church in Rock Hall. She was a stuffed animal collector.


Mrs. Burden is survived by her husband of 30 years, Dennis J. Burden of Vista; and brother Marvin Sisco of Rock Hall.


A memorial service is scheduled for 11 a.m. Thursday, June 19, at Edenview Funeral Chapel in San Marcos.

ESCONDIDO - Lively E. Houser, 80, died Sunday, June 15, 2003, at her home.


Born Sept. 7, 1922, in Potter, Ark., she lived in Escondido for 39 years. She was a homemaker, artist/painter and Christian spiritual counselor. She enjoyed gardening.


Mrs. Houser is survived by her husband of 56 years, Robert D. Houser of Escondido; daughter Carolyn J. Hohenberger of Escondido; sons and daughter-in-law Jim L. DuVal of Las Vegas, William L. and Donna Houser of Escondido and Duane D. Houser of Las Vegas; sister Leona Thomas of Escondido; grandchildren Samantha, Simone, Sean, Jonathan, Erik and Jettie Ann; and two great-grandchildren.


Visitation and viewing are scheduled for noon with funeral service at 1 p.m. Friday, June 20, at the Seventh-day Adventist Church, 331 W. Fourth Ave. in Escondido.

OCEANSIDE - Skip Arthur, 69, died Sunday, June 15, 2003, at Kaiser Zion Hospital in San Diego.


Born April 3, 1934, in Grand Rapids, Mich., he lived in Oceanside for 30 years. He was an entrepreneur for 30 years.


Mr. Arthur is survived by his wife, Jean Arthur of Oceanside; son Steve Arthur of Oceanside; daughter Kathleen McClure of Vista; brothers Tim Arthur of Oceanside and Frank Arthur of Michigan; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Born Sept. 1, 1923, in LoS Angeles, she lived in Bullhead City for 20 years. She was a school bus driver for Poway Unified School District for many years.


Mrs. Wright was preceded in death by her husband, Bernard P. Wright; and son Richard J. Wright. She is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law, Alice and Randy LaMar of Valley Center and Debbie L. and Tim Tibbites of Bullhead City; grandchildren Yvette, Amanda, Robyn, Peggy and Jake; and seven great-grandchildren.

Sidney Stokes, 83




LA MESA - Sidney Allen Stokes, 83, died Saturday, June 14, 2003, of cancer.


Born July 25, 1919, in El Centro, he lived in San Diego since 1923. He graduated from Brown Military Academy in 1937. He attended San Diego State College. He worked in heavy construction on the Texoma Dam in Denison, Texas, for the E. Paul Fords Co.


He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II as a B-29 navigator and engineer. He retired in 1977 after 38 years for Pacific Telephone and Telegraph Co.


He was a member of the Good Sam Fifth Wheel Trailer Club and College Avenue Baptist Church.


Mr. Stokes is survived by his wife of 61 years, Bonnie L. Stokes of La Mesa; son and daughter-in-law James and Barbara Stokes of Carlsbad; daughter and son-in-law Jo Anne and Richard Hoy of La Mesa; sisters Elsie Underwood of Nokesville, Va., and Dorothy Wiker of El Cajon; and grandchildren Matthew, Rebecca, Daniel and Bonnie.


A memorial service is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Friday, June 20, at College Avenue Baptist Church in San Diego. Private burial will follow.

Born Dec. 18, 1928, in London, England, she lived in Escondido for 23 years. She was in the entertainment business for many years. She attended Riverside Junior College.


She was a member of Baha'i faith in Escondido. She organized children's musical programs.


Mrs. Smith is survived by her daughter, Amberly Engle of California; son and daughter-in-law David R. and Tina Smith of La Jolla; and brother Donald Whitehill of England.

CARLSBAD - Royden Clarke Cartwright, 93, died Sunday, June 15, 2003, in Encinitas.


Born Jan. 2, 1910, in San Luis Obispo, he lived in Carlsbad for 25 years. He was a teacher and principal for Montebello School District for 35 years. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, retiring as a lieutenant.


Mr. Cartwright is survived by his wife of 70 years, Olga Cartwright of Carlsbad; son Royden Cartwright of Cincinnati; daughters Ann Churchill and Virginia Cartwright, both of Fallbrook; seven grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.


Visitation is scheduled from 9 to 10 a.m. with funeral service at 10 a.m. Thursday, June 19, at Allen Bros. Mortuary, San Marcos Chapel.


Interment will follow at 1 p.m. at Riverside National Cemetery.

Richard Sears, 74




OCEANSIDE - Richard W. Sears, 74, died Monday, June 9, 2003, at Tri-City Medical Center of heart failure.


Born March 10, 1929, in Danville, Ill., he lived in Oceanside for six years. He retired in May 1968 as a master sergeant for the U.S. Air Force. He retired in June 1995 as a teacher for the Hilmar Unified School District. He was a member of the Atwater Baptist Church, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Disabled American Veterans and the American Legion. He was a volunteer for the sheriff and police department in Merced County and Oceanside, and Civil Air Patrol. He was a Little League coach and Cub Scout assistant. He enjoyed reading.


Mr. Sears was preceded in death by his parents, Leslie and Verna Sears; and sister Barbara. He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Tina Sears of Oceanside; sons Michael Sears of Los Angeles, Eric Sears of Montrose and Mark Sears of Santa Clarita; daughters Teresa Olson of Merced and Barbara Sears of Oceanside; and grandchildren Lucas, Jacob, Jason, Nicole, Audrey, Nick, Georgia, Kenny and Jessica.


No services will be held at the request of the deceased. His cremains will be scattered at sea.

CARLSBAD - Manny Landavazo, 55, died Friday, June 13, 2003.


Born Nov. 18, 1947, in Maywood, he lived in Carlsbad for 35 years. He retired after 35 years as a self-employed contractor. He served in the U.S. Army.


Mr. Landavazo is survived by his mother, Donna Graham of Montana; grandmother Daisy Gaton of Montana; son Brook Landavazo of Vista; daughter and son-in-law Dana and Brad Weekes; and brothers and sisters-in-law Joseph and Linda Landavazo of North Carolina, and Gary Landavazo and Mark and Kelle Landavazo, all of Oregon.


A funeral service is scheduled for 10 a.m. Thursday, June 19, at Oceanside Mortuary Chapel with the Rev. Barry Click officiating. Burial with military honors will follow at 2:45 p.m. at Riverside National Cemetery.

ESCONDIDO - William John Garleb, 80, died Tuesday, May 27, 2003, at his home.


Born July 20, 1922, in St. Louis, Mo., he lived in Escondido for 47 years. He was a letter carrier for the U.S. Postal Service in Escondido. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, where he was a prisoner of war in a Japanese camp in Bataan, Philippines for 3 1/2 years. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the American Legion, the Disabled American Veterans, the American Defenders of Bataan and Corregidor and the 31st Infantry Association. He was active in San Diego County theater groups for many years.


Mr. Garleb is survived by his wife of 50 years, Rita A. Garleb of Escondido; daughters and son-in-law Nancy Thompson of Seattle and Joanne and Glen Spraggon of San Diego; sons and daughters-in-law William Jr. and Beatrice Garleb of Imperial and Alexander Garleb and Mark Garleb, both of Escondido; sister Betty Stubits of St. Louis, Mo.; and grandchildren Danielle, Britton, Alta, Ian, Michelle, Rachel, Jared and Ethan.


A memorial service is scheduled for 2 p.m. today, June 18, at the Veterans Memorial Building, 230 E. Park Ave. in Escondido. Interment took place on Thursday, May 29, at Oak Hill Memorial Park.

Edmund Alexander




Edmund Brooks Alexander, a Prineville, Ore., resident passed away on Friday, June 13, 2003, at his home. He was 88 years old.


Cremation will be held at the Prineville Heritage Crematory under the direction of the Prineville Funeral Home. At Mr. Alexander's request no public services will be held.


Mr. Alexander was born on November 12, 1914, in Lebanon, Missouri, the son of Benjamin L. and Rachel A. (Rice) Alexander. He moved to Escondido, California, when he was 5 years old, where he received his education graduating from Escondido Union High School in 1933. After his graduation he spent six months in the Civilian Conservation Corps at Stoney Ford California. Mr. Alexander then spent three months driving a truck for a gold mine in Rice, California.


He married Regina Lillian Pascoe on December 20, 1934 in Escondido, Calif. In 1936 he went to work picking lemons for the Escondido Lemon Association.


From 1941 until 1943 he worked as the manager for Standard Oil of California service stations. In 1943 he was called back to the Lemon Association and was made field superintendent working there until 1959. After which working for a fertilizer and chemical company from which he retired in 1976. The couple moved to Prineville in October of 1986 from Escondido.


Mr. Alexander was a member of the Prineville Christian Church. He was a longtime member of the Palomar Gem and Mineral Club in Escondido, where he was an avid rock collector and lapidarist. Mr. Alexander enjoyed hunting and fishing.


Mr. Alexander is survived by his wife, Regina Alexander of Prineville; sons Edmund Kenneth and his wife, Patricia Alexander of Eugene, Ore. and Gerald and his wife, Linda Alexander of Kennewick, Wash.; 10 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. Mr. Alexander was preceded in death by his parents and 13 brothers and sisters.


It has been suggested that those wishing to make a memorial contribution in Mr. Alexander's memory to them to Pioneer Memorial Hospice at 1201 NE Elm St., Prineville, OR 97754.


Arrangements are under the direction of the Prineville Funeral Home.

Born Jan. 25, 1923, in Morristown, N.J., she lived in Riverside County for 13 years. She was a homemaker for 50 years.


Mrs. Feryan was preceded in death by her sister, Theresa E. Andiorio. She is survived by her husband of 24 years, James E. Feryan of Murrieta; stepson, James M. Feryan of Visalia; daughter, Cecelia Connor of Los Angeles; and one step-grandson.

MURRIETA ---- Naoma Elaine Oddie, 74, died Friday, June 13, 2003, at her home.


She was born Nov. 26, 1928, in Los Angeles. She was a homemaker for 50 years. She was a member of six Southern California art associations. She received a secondary art teaching credential from Los Angeles and state colleges. She did post-graduate art studies at Pierce College and Cal State University at Northridge. Her ceramics were exhibited at the Bogar Gallery.


Mrs. Oddie is survived by her husband, James Oddie of Murrieta; sons James W. Oddie of Cerritos and Michael J. Oddie of Tacoma, Wash.; brother, Donald Williams; and four grandchildren.


A memorial service is scheduled for 1 p.m. today, June 18, at Miller-Jones Mortuary & Crematory in Sun City. Private interment will be at Riverside National Cemetery.

She was born April 16, 1922, in Red Jacket, W. Va. She was a homemaker. She was a defense worker during World War II. She won several awards at the Farmers Fair.


Mrs. Pitts is survived by her daughters Sarah Pitts and Roberta Pitts, both of Lake Elsinore; son and daughter-in-law, Andrew and Jackie Pitts of Fallbrook; sisters Sarah Jenks of Afton, N.Y., and Alberta McFayden of Wilmington, N.C.; and grandchildren Amanda and Chris.

TEMECULA ---- Jim Urban III, 19, died Saturday, June 14, 2003, in Seal Beach of trauma from an accident.


Born Nov. 28, 1983, in Westminster, he lived in Temecula for seven years. He graduated in 2001 from Temecula Valley High School. He was attending Mt. San Jacinto College.


Jim is survived by his father, Jim Urban of Victorville; mother and stepfather, Estrella and Oscar Rosales of Temecula; sisters Leticia Urban, Rachel Rosales, Katrina Rosales and Marrissa Rosales, all of Temecula; and grandparents Frank and Rachel Jaurequi of Artesia and Jim and Mary Urban of Hesperia.


Visitation is scheduled from 6 to 8 p.m. with a vigil at 6:30 p.m. today, June 18, at Stout Family Funeral Home in Temecula.

HEMET ---- Wallace C. Tjomsland, 83, died Saturday, June 14, 2003, at Hemet Hospital.


Born April 28, 1920, in Mitchell, S.D., he lived in Hemet for four years. He lived in Murrieta for 21 years prior. He was a concrete specialist for 25 years. He served in the U.S. Air Force during World War II.


Mr. Tjomsland is survived by his daughter, Sue Tjomsland of Menifee; son, Dan Tjomsland of Hemet; brother, Richard Tjomsland of Montrose, Colo.; and three grandchildren.


A graveside service will be held at 2:15 p.m. Thursday, June 19, at Riverside National Cemetery.
