Songwriter to play host

TEMECULA - Singer-songwriter Judy Taylor will host the Hometown Poetry & Songwriters Night today.

The entertainer's repertoire includes classic standards, country rock, swing, bluegrass, Cajun and fold music.

"She's a trick-roping,

guitar-playing, singing cowgirl with over 20 years of professional entertainment," said Jon Laskin, executive director of Musicians Workshop, which hosts the event.

The free event features an open-stage format. It starts at 7 p.m. every Friday at 28690 Mercedes St. in Old Town.

Singers, musicians such as guitarists and piano players, poets and the public are invited to attend.

Laskin said the Poetry & Songwriters Night, which recently started up, is proving popular, with people from Los Angeles and San Diego coming.

In addition, the Musicians Workshop will hold a reception for local watercolor artist David Musser from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday. Refreshments will be served, and the public is invited to attend.

Musser is the first artist to have his work displayed at the workshop's Mercedes Street building. His art will be shown through August. Next month will feature artist Bea Taylor.

Event actors needed

TEMECULA - The Temecula Valley Players community theater group will hold auditions for performances during the Erle Stanley Gardner Mystery Weekend, set for Nov. 1 and 2 in Old Town.

Over the weekend, spectators will be encouraged to pick up clues, watch dramatized clues given by TVP actors, vote and then attend the stage-adapted performance of a Perry Mason script, where the culprit of the mystery will be revealed. Auditions will be held 6:30 to

9 p.m. Sept. 30 at the Temecula Community Recreation Center, 30875 Rancho Vista.

Casting for all types, young adults to seniors. Bring a schedule of conflicts, and be prepared to cold read from the script. For information, call 652-9584.

Horse show scheduled

TEMECULA-- An American quarter horse show will be held Sept. 18 to 21 in Temecula.

"The AQHA Show for the Gold," is approved by the American Quarter Horse Association and will test horses' abilities in dozens of classes.

It also will feature events such as jumping, reining, barrel racing, cutting, roping and pole bending.

Additionally, there will be halter classes that judge horses based on balance, muscling and breed characteristics.

Japan's culture studied

TEMECULA - Children will sample Japanese culture Saturday at the Kodokai Aikido studio, 42140 Avenida Alvarado, and the public is invited to watch the goings-on.

Aikido instructor Oshima Minoru has planned a full day of events - such as breathing and Zen meditation, aikido classes, origami and brush writing. He said the purpose is to have the children experience Japanese culture, plus provide them an opportunity to get to know one another.

About 13 children have signed up, although Oshima said he would accept more. The children range in age from 6 to 12 years old. Some have been taking aikido for six months, and some for more than 5 years.

The day begins with breathing meditation and aikido. About 1 to 3 p.m., the children will get lessons in shodo, or Japanese brush writing, and origami, the art of paper-folding. About

3 p.m. the students will give an aikido demonstration.

Teen bands to compete

MURRIETA - The "Battle of the Bands" is set for Oct. 10, and the city's Community Services Department seeks entries from junior high and high school students.

Bands may drop off a CD or tape at California Oaks Sports Park, 40600 California Oaks Road, or the Murrieta Community Center, 41810 Juniper St. Seven bands will be selected to compete for cash, prizes and trophies.

Weight-loss group to start next week

LAKE ELSINORE - "No More Excuses," a women's health and weight-loss support group, will start next Wednesday.

Seminar to take look at Alzheimer's

WILDOMAR - Southwest Healthcare System and Doctor Victor Nguyen hold a free breakfast and seminar each month to address health-care issues.

CANYON LAKE - Misunderstood, a support group for parents of children with bipolar disorder or ADHD, meets the second and fourth Monday of every month.

Workshop teaches brain-body link

A workshop this month will explore the "One Brain/One Body" connection.

Brain Solutions will show how environment and foods affect learning and behavior. It is geared to help boost academic skills, test scores, athletic performance and job performance; it may also help people cope better with autism or ADHD.

Water shiatsu classes scheduled

MURRIETA - Yoga Healing will host watsu, or water shiatsu, workshops from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Aug. 19 and 26.

Watsu is a form of physical and emotional therapy practiced in warm water. With registration by Monday, the cost is $50 for one class or $100 for both. After, the cost is $55 and $110.

Poker run benefits local nonprofits

TEMECULA ---- An "Early Harvest Poker Run" on Saturday will benefit Animal Friends of the Valley, Operation School Bell and Reins Therapeutic Horsemanship.

The poker run is part of the open-house celebration of Quaid Temecula Harley Davidson, 28964 Old Town Front St., and is hosted by Temecula Valley H.O.G. and Ladies of Harley.

Registration is from 8 to 10 a.m. High hand wins $200, low hand gets $100, and the winner of the Chapter Challenge Award receives $100. The $15 entry fee includes food and drawings, such as a 50/50 drawing.

Lake Elsinore has free concert series

LAKE ELSINORE - The "Music with a View" concert series begins Saturday with the group Benise and featuring flamenco dancers.

Jazz and salsa band Caravana will perform Aug. 23, and an Irish quintet, the Fenians, will play Aug. 30 The Riverside Philharmonic concludes the concert series Sept. 6.

The Elsinore Valley Arts Network and the city host the free concert series. Concerts begin at 7:30 p.m. at McVicker Park, 29355 Grand Ave.

TEMECULA - The Z-Car Club Inland Valley will hold an inaugural car show Sunday at Quality Nissan, 41895 Motor Car Parkway.

Trophies will be awarded in all classes, for Best of Show and for sponsor Quality Nissan's pick. Also on tap are race cars, a drawing for show entrants, discounts at the auto dealer's parts department, a DJ and vendor booths.

MENIFEE - A group working to forge Menifee Valley's independence is collecting signatures on petitions to put the issue before voters.

    Concert proceeds benefit Red Cross

    TEMECULA - Vocalist Phil Perry will headline Wilson Creek Winery's "Sunset Jazz in the Vines Concert" today.

    Perry's love songs can be heard on albums such as "The Heart of the Man," "Pure Pleasure" and "One Heart."

    Saxophonist Jimmy Reid will open the concert, which begins at 7 p.m. at the winery, 35960 Rancho California Road.

    General admission costs $45. Add a gourmet dinner by Spaghettini's Italian Grill, and the cost is $95. Proceeds from the concert will go to the local chapter of the American Red Cross.

    Blues, rock coming to Old Town today

    TEMECULA - The Gem Tones and The Two of Us will bring back music from the 1960s, '70s and '80s from 6 to 9 p.m. today at Hot Summer Nights in Old Town.

    The Gem Tones is a guitar-driven blues rock band that will play at the Country Porch state at Third and Front Street.

    The Two of Us specializes in the tunes of artists such as The Beatles, America, The Eagles, James Taylor and Cat Stevens. The band will play at the Rosa Cantina alcove on Front Street.

    In addition, Old Tyme Folk will play at Wild Cactus. This local group specializes in historical folk songs of the late 1800s.

    Meeting to host Assembly hopeful

    TEMECULA - Rita Ramariz Dean, a candidate for the 65th Assembly district, will be the guest speaker at the Saturday meeting of the Democratic Women of Southwest Riverside County.
