SAN DIEGO ---- The number of people who have gotten salmonella poisoning after eating at an Escondido restaurant has climbed to at least 40, a spokeswoman for the county Health and Human Services Agency said Thursday.
The victims became sick after eating at Elias' Restaurant, a family-style eatery at 1141 E. Washington Ave., between Oct. 14 and 31. Another 35 people are suspected of having salmonella, health department spokeswoman Leslie Ridgeway said.
The restaurant is closed until it is sanitized and its workers retrained in food-handling requirements.
The source of the salmonella hasn't been determined, but the county is conducting extensive testing and interviews in an attempt to find it, Ridgeway said.
Elias' Restaurant closed Nov. 4. At the time, a county health officer predicted the eatery would reopen within a few days.
On Wednesday, county Department of Environmental Health spokeswoman Liz Quaranta said the restaurant had significantly improved its food-handling process but that employees still needed to complete a clearance process.
Salmonella is not usually fatal. Symptoms, which usually occur a day to a week after infection, include fever, abdominal cramps and diarrhea that lasts four to seven days.
