San Diego Wild Animal Park to send condors to Oregon Zoo

SAN DIEGO - Five rare condors from the San Diego Wild Animal Park will be sent to the Oregon Zoo's condor conservation center, the park announced today.
The move is in conjunction with the California Condor Recovery Program, an effort to sustain both a captive and wild population.
The three females and two males will join six birds from the Los Angeles Zoo and one from the Peregrine Center in Boise, Idaho to make six new breeding pairs.
"Establishing a new breeding program in Oregon increases the species' chances of survival in the event of a natural disaster or a disease that would threaten the other breeding facilities," said animal park curator Mike Mace. "In addition, we are distributing the genes so that if a breeding colony is wiped out, we wouldn't lose the entire genetic line."
The timetable for when the condors are moved is still not set.
