FRESNO ---- Rancho Bernardo High junior Lindsay delaMontaigne regained her form with an impressive 12th-place finish in Saturday's CIF State Cross Country Championships.
She had the best finish of all Division I girls runners from North County.
DelaMontaigne recorded a time of 18 minutes, 18 seconds for 3.1 miles at Woodward Park. She improved on her 2002 State Championships time of 19:49.
"It felt really good," she said. "I really like this course."
DelaMontaigne experienced some hard luck in the past few weeks. First, she was passed by Vista's Andrea Jacobs for the Palomar League title. She tripped and fell as she was trying to kick in the final stretch to hold off Jacobs.
Then, last week, she finished in fourth at the CIF-San Diego Section Finals behind Jacobs and El Camino teammates Sariah St. Laurent and Mariana Monasi.
But this time she was two spots ahead of Jacobs, who was 14th in 18:26.
"It felt good to pass her," she said of Jacobs. "I wanted to make sure it didn't happen again. I was determined to finish ahead of all of them."
While delaMontaigne seemed to go unnoticed throughout the race, she ran consistently from start to finish.
"I do better on longer runs," she said. "I really like this course."
The pace of the race seemed to be to her liking. But, in reality, it was her ability to control her emotions, and just relax that made delaMontaigne a force to be reckoned with at Fresno.
"I was getting too overwhelmed in the other races," she said. "This week, I just had fun and ran my race. I didn't doubt myself mentally, and I just ran relaxed."
While others might have been surprised, Broncos coach Terry Dockery thought she had it in her.
"I really thought she could be close to the top 10," he said.
Dockery noted that delaMontaigne had to think positive for this race.
"I told her it was all mental," he said. "I didn't want her to put too much stress on herself, and to be mentally positive."
