Nellie Schapery, 92

FALLBROOK - Nellie Schapery, 92, died Friday, Nov. 28, 2003, at Fallbrook Gardens.

Born July 30, 1911, in Kiev, Ukraine, she lived in Fallbrook for four years.

She was a past member of Grace Bible Church in Bryan, Texas and the Gideon Bible Organization and Prison Ministry in Bryan. She was a volunteer at the Skilled Nursing Center. She was Volunteer of the Year for the state of Texas, in 1995.

Mrs. Schapery was preceded in death by her husband, Aaron Schapery, in 1979; and son Stephen Schapery in 1969.

She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Richard and Mae Schapery of Austin, Texas; daughters and sons-in-law Charlotte and Taido Anderson of Fallbrook and Cynthia and Brahim Satoutah of Pleasonton; nine grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

A funeral service is scheduled for 2 p.m. today, Dec. 2, at Berry-Bell & Hall Mortuary Chapel. Interment will follow at Fallbrook Masonic Cemetery.

Marie Jensen, 80

ESCONDIDO - Marie Sophronia Jensen, 80, died Wednesday, Nov. 26, 2003, of natural causes.

Born July 22, 1923, in Craig, Colo., she lived in Escondido for 65 years. She retired in 1985 from Sony Corp. in Rancho Bernardo.

Mrs. Jensen was preceded in death by her husband, Carl Albert Jensen, in 1979; and grandson Michael James Gallacher in 2002.

She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Bill and Barbara Gober of Escondido; daughters and sons-in-law Edna and Jim Gallacher of Escondido and Betty and Marvin Hillard of San Marcos; seven grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Viewing will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 3, at El Camino Memorial, Sorrento Valley Chapel in San Diego.

A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 4, at Oak Hill Memorial Park in Escondido.

Beverly Butler, 79

ESCONDIDO - Beverly C. Butler, 79, died Monday, Nov. 24, 2003.

Born Sept. 5, 1924, in Los Angeles, she lived in Escondido for three years. She was an artist.

Ms. Butler is survived by her sons and daughter-in-law, Charles Butler of Occidental and Byron and Luann Butler of Murrieta; daughters and son-in-law Marie Heilmann of Long Beach and Alicia and Jim Sotherland of Escondido; brother and sister-in-law Billy and Carol Greenzweit of Loveland, Colo.; grandchildren Valarie, Jerry Jr., Natalie, Charlie, Melia, Ryan and Matthew; and six great-grandchildren.

A private memorial will be held at a later date.

Harry Flemming III, 66

OCEANSIDE - Harry Clinton Flemming III, 66, died Wednesday, Nov. 26, 2003, at San Diego Hospice.

Born Nov. 4, 1937, in Birmingham, Ala., he lived in Oceanside for 33 years. He retired as a staff sergeant for the U.S. Marine Corps. He served during the Vietnam War for three tours.

Mr. Flemming was preceded in death by his parents, Catherine F. and Harry C. Flemming Jr.

He is survived by his wife of 31 years, Yaeko Flemming of Oceanside; sons and daughter-in-law Gary Flemming of Oceanside and Terry and Judy Flemming of Okinawa, Japan; brothers John F. Flemming of Birmingham, Ala., and Steve S. Flemming of Rockwood, Tenn.; sister Catherine Frederica Crowe of White House, Tenn.; and four grandchildren.

Viewing is scheduled from 9 to 10 a.m. and funeral service at 10 a.m. Friday, Dec. 5, at Eternal Hills Mortuary with the Rev. Steve Chappell officiating.

Burial will follow at Eternal Hills Memorial Park.

Dalton Loving, 84

HUNTINGTON BEACH - Dalton K. "Pete" Loving, 84, died Friday, Nov. 28, 2003, in Newport Beach.

Born July 16, 1919, in Artesia, N.M., he lived in Huntington Beach for four years. He lived in Fallbrook for 25 years previously.

He retired as a senior fire inspector for the Los Angeles City Fire Department. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II.

He was a past member of the Fallbrook Reche Club. He was a former volunteer for the Joselyn Senior Center in Fallbrook and Fallbrook Land Conservancy. He was a former docent at Carlsbad Flower Field.

Mr. Loving was preceded in death by his wife, Frances B. Loving, in 1990.

He is survived by his sons and daughter-in-law, Mike and Sandy Loving of Huntington Beach, Steve Loving of Brea and Joe Loving of Florida; two grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

A memorial service is scheduled for 10 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 4, at Berry-Bell & Hall Fallbrook Mortuary. Inurnment will follow at Fallbrook Masonic Cemetery.

Ray Jacobsen, 86

ESCONDIDO - Ray R. Jacobsen, 86, died Wednesday, Nov. 26, 2003.

Born March 16, 1917, in Denison, Iowa, he lived in Escondido for 27 years. He retired in 1975 from Chicago North Western Railroad.

He served in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, and a 55 year member of International Brotherhood Electrical Workers Union.

Mr. Jacobsen is survived by his sons and daughters-in-law, Reggie and Judy Jacobsen of Fallbrook, Bill and Shirley Jacobsen of Edwards, Mo., and Byron Jacobsen of Thermoupolis, Wyo.; daughter Terrie Jacobsen of Escondido; brother Glenn Jacobsen of Perry, Iowa; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

No services will be held at the request of the deceased. A private cremation is planned.

Pearl Allen, 84

OCEANSIDE - Pearl J. Allen, 84, died Tuesday, Nov. 25, 2003, at her home.

Born Nov. 16, 1919, in Maine, she lived in Oceanside for 26 years. She graduated from Mexico High School in Mexico, Maine, in 1937.

Mrs. Allen is survived by her husband, George Allen of Oceanside; daughter Lisa Wright of San Diego; grandchildren Tammy and Lynn Wright; and one great-granddaughter.

Private cremation is planned with inurnment in Norridgewock, Maine.

Oliver Porter, 84

ESCONDIDO - Oliver Rudy Porter, 84, died Thursday, Nov. 27, 2003.

Born Aug. 23, 1919, in St. Paul, Minn., he lived in Escondido for 35 years. Mr. Porter is survived by his cousins, Duane Reed of Corona Del Mar and Marmion Bertold of Los Gatos.

Burial at Oak Hill Memorial Park is planned.

William Brady, 88

ESCONDIDO - William Arthur Brady, 88, died Thursday, Nov. 27, 2003.

Born Aug. 27, 1915, in Wetumka, Okla., he lived in Escondido for 66 years. He was a self-employed contractor for 66 years. He was the superintendent of the Coronado Bay Bridge project and built many bridges in San Diego County.

He was a member of Emmanuel Faith Community Church. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and gardening.

Mr. Brady was preceded in death by his daughter, Gwendolyn Joyce Brady, in 1962; and granddaughter April Taff in 2001.

He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Dannie Mari Brady of Escondido; son and daughter-in-law Arthur Rex "Buddy" and Ida Jouise Brady of Escondido; brother Graden A. Brady of Eufala, Okla.; sister Clara Irene Brady of Eufala; grandchildren Nicole and Jason; and three great-grandchildren.

A graveside service is scheduled for 1 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 4, at Oak Hill Memorial Park, 2640 Glenridge Road in Escondido.

Audrey Pekala, 84

ESCONDIDO - Audrey May Pekala, 84, died Wednesday, Nov. 26, 2003.

Born Aug. 25, 1919, in Tennie, N.M., she lived in Escondido for five years. She lived in Amarillo, Texas for 10 years previously.

She retired in 1980 as an executive secretary for Montgomery Ward in Chicago. She was a member of the Assembly of God Church and the Women's Missionary Society.

Mrs. Pekala was preceded in death by her husband, Chester J. Pekala, in 1991.

She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Lee and Pauline Murphy of Las Vegas; brothers and sisters-in-law Fay and Gwen Wallace and Roy and Marge Wallace, all of Amarillo, and Gale and Joyce Wallace of Silver Spring, Md.; sister and brother-in-law Ruth and Al Snelling of Amarillo; grandchildren Rhonda, Pamela, Melinda, Morgan and Sean; and three great-grandchildren.

Viewing is scheduled from 4 to 7 p.m. today, Dec. 2, at McLeod Mortuary.

A funeral service will be held at noon, Wednesday, Dec. 3, at McLeod Mortuary, 1919 W. Valley Parkway with the Rev. Steve Asmuth officiating.

Burial will follow at 2:45 p.m. at Riverside National Cemetery.

Roger Larson, 79

ESCONDIDO - Roger Howard Larson, 79, died Saturday, Nov. 29, 2003, of natural causes.

Born May 23, 1924, in St. Paul, Minn., he lived in Escondido for one year. He lived in San Marcos for 34 years previously.

He retired in 1996 as self-employed civil engineer. He served as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army Air Corps from 1945 to 1948.

He received a bachelor's degree in civil engineering from UC Berkeley in 1953.

Mr. Larson was preceded in death by his son, David H. Larson, on June 25, 1983.

He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Norine M. Larson of Escondido; son and daughter-in-law Nathan and Debbie Larson of San Marcos; brother and sister-in-law William and Ruth Larson of San Bernardino; sister Elizabeth Benke of Anaheim; and grandchildren Hannah and Abigail Larson.

A memorial service is scheduled for 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 6, at Crossroads Christian Reformed Church in San Marcos.

John Markey, 72

CARLSBAD - John A. Markey, 72, died Saturday, Nov. 29, 2003, at Tri-City Medical Center.

Born Oct. 12, 1931, in Carlsbad, he lived in the Carlsbad and Oceanside area for 68 years. He retired as a manager of a carpenter's garage.

He served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War, where he received the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal.

He was a Fourth Degree Knighthood in the Knight of Columbus, a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion.

He was a member of the Friendly Sons of St. Patrick Chapter, the Oceanside Elks Lodge, the Oceanside Evening Optimist Chapter, the Mira Costa Alumni Association, and the DAV Commander Club. He was a parishioner of St. Mary Star of the Sea Church. He enjoyed golf and automotive mechanics.

Mr. Markey was preceded in death by his parents, Margaret Killorin and Richard Markey.

He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Barbara Markey of Oceanside; daughters Pamela Gallade of Newport Beach and Patsy Markey and Teresa and Victor Gomez, all of Oceanside; brother Joseph Markey of Reno, Nev.; and four grandchildren.

Visitation is scheduled from 4 to 8 p.m. with rosary recited from 7 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 3, at Eternal Hills Mortuary.

A Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 4, at St. Mary's Star of the Sea Catholic Church in Oceanside with the Rev. Patrick Mulcahy officiating.

Burial will follow at Mission San Luis Rey Cemetery in Oceanside with the Rev. Mulcahy officiating.

Betty Joann Williams-Peoples, 68

FALLBROOK - Betty Joann "B.J." Williams Peoples, 68, died Thursday, Nov. 27, 2003.

She was born Dec. 18, 1934, in Florence, S.C. She was in healthcare as a CNA CHHA at Fallbrook Hospital and was a ward clerk on medical surgery for seven years. She was in Home Health Hospice for three years. She had lived in Hawaii for many years.

Mrs. Peoples is survived by her sister, Mary Fairwell of Conway, S.C.; brother Hubert Williams of Conway; sons and daughters-in-law Ronald W. and H. Maxine Peoples of San Diego and Dana Tyrone and Teri Peoples of Fallbrook; daughter and son-in-law Gwendolyn and Mike Dempster of Oceanside; six grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; and four step-great-grandchildren.

Visitation and viewing are scheduled from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 4, at Alhiser-Comer Mortuary in Escondido. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 5, at Second Missionary Church at 5301 Mare Road in Oceanside with the Rev. James Mason officiating. Margaret Kowalski, 74

DESOTO, Ga. - Margaret June Jordan Kowalski, 74, died Tuesday, Nov. 18, 2003, of natural causes.

Born June 7, 1929, in San Diego, she lived in DeSoto and Encinitas. She retired as a data analyst from General Dynamics. She was a member of St. John's Catholic Church in Encinitas.

Mrs. Kowalski is survived by her son, Peter Brian Maxwell of Encinitas; daughter Lorna Susan Slaton-Whitaker of DeSoto; and grandchildren Karamet, Safa, David, Izzuddin, Halim and Hugh.

A service will be held at 9 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 4, at El Camino Sorrento Valley Chapel, 5600 Carroll Canyon Road in San Diego with Monsignor Timothy Harnett officiating. Interment will be at El Camino Memorial Park, 5600 Carroll Canyon Road in San Diego.

Gaylord Bahlmann

Gaylord Peterson Bahlmann went to be with the Lord on Thanksgiving Day, November 27, 2003, at his home in Encinitas, from complications of a stroke.

He was born Dec. 5, 1926, near Winters, Texas. Gaylord was the fourth son of Willie Walter and Ruth Obedience Bahlmann.

The family moved to Bakersfield, California, in 1941, and to Encinitas, California, in 1942. Gaylord graduated from San Dieguito High School, then enlisted in the Navy and served as a radio man of the USS Colusa from 1944 to 1946. He was also a graduate of Texas A&M.

As a young man, Gaylord became interested in the flower industry and began growing gladiolas and chrysanthemums. He farmed in San Diego and Imperial counties, both field and greenhouse crops until his retirement in 1986. Mr. Bahlmann was a member of North Coast Church in Vista.

He was preceded in death by his parents and infant brother; his wife, Ruth Bahlmann, and great-grandson, Noah.

He is survived by three brothers, Boyd of Encinitas, Willie W. of Hemet, Johnny Q. of Bakersfield; sister Gladys of Encinitas; daughters Diana Elias of Temecula, Victoria Ware of Sequim, Wash., Cara Shelton of Vista; son Bryan of San Marcos; 12 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Throughout his life, Gaylord was a shining example of generosity, a devoted family man, and friend to many.

A viewing will be held on Thursday, Dec. 4, 2003, between the hours of 4 to 8 p.m. at Eternal Hills Mortuary, 1999 El Camino Real in Oceanside, Calif. Private graveside services will be held on Saturday, Dec. 5, 2003, at Eternal Hills Memorial Park in Oceanside.

A Memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 6, at North Coast Church in Vista.

Ralph Conrad

Ralph Conrad, one hour before his 90th birthday, died Friday, November 28, 2003. He was born in San Diego on November 29, 1913.

He enjoyed a successful career with the Daily News as automotive and real estate editor in the San Fernando Valley. He was also active in the Lyon's Club. When he retired in 1973, he chose the little known area of Bonsall, where he and his wife, LaVerne, purchased a six-acre ranch to build their dream home. Ralph enjoyed gardening and built a beautiful terraced garden down to a year-round stream.

An active member in the Southern California Iris Society, he planted a variety of irises but focused on Pacificas, small iris native to California. He hybridized many varieties included a tall-bearded he called "windshadows." Ralph also loved roses and had several gardens mostly of the grande flore variety.

As he spent his days in his beloved garden, his wife of almost 67 years worked to better the community including founding the Bonsall Woman's Club. All who were fortunate to have known him will remember him as a quiet, gentleman with a wonderful sense of humor and adorable smile.

He is survived by his wife, LaVerne; daughters Kay and Gail; sons-in-law Rich and Peppy; grandchildren Jeffrey, Kathleen, Jeanette, Jim, Erin and Jackie; and great-grandchildren Josh, Amanda, Kyle, Evan, Tyler and Connor. Ralph thrived on the love of his family and his memory will remain forever.

The funeral will be held on Wednesday, December 3, 2003, at the Berry-Bell & Hall Fallbrook Mortuary at 333 N. Vine Street at 2 p.m.

Norma Shatzer, 76

LAKE ELSINORE ---- Norma Rose Shatzer, 76, died Thursday, Nov. 27, 2003, at Riverside County Regional Medical Center.

Born Nov. 7, 1927, in Anoka, Minn., she lived in Lake Elsinore since 1964. She was a foster parent for 27 children in Los Angeles, Monterey and Riverside counties. She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and was president of the Primary Children in the Norwalk Ward in 1958 and president of the Relief Society in the Lake Elsinore Ward. She was in the Ortega Ward. She was a dietician from 1964 to 1968 for Elsinore Valley Hospital, and from 1969 to 1972 for the Canyon Lake Club House.

Mrs. Shatzer is survived by her husband, Raymond Harry Shatzer of Lake Elsinore; sons Larry Shatzer of Lake Elsinore, Earl Shatzer of Vacaville and Ray Shatzer of Wildomar; brother, Larry Jenkins of Upland; sister, Joyce Duffy of Yucca Valley; nine grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be held starting at 9 a.m. until the start of the service at 10:15 a.m. today, Dec. 2, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints with Bishop Roy Southwick officiating. Interment will follow at 12:30 p.m. at Riverside National Cemetery.

HOMELAND ---- Edward Leroy Curtis, 68, died Wednesday, Nov. 26, 2003, at his home.

Born March 19, 1935, in Fontana, he lived in Homeland for nine years. He was a sheet metal worker for Northern California Sheet Metal Union 1162 for 40 years. He was a member of the Highland Palms Golf Club for seven years.

Mr. Curtis is survived by his mother, Mabel Catherine Senter Curtis of Homeland; daughter, Mae Herwaldt of Brookfield, Wis.; son, Edward Leroy Curtis II of Jay, Okla.; brothers Michael A. Curtis Jr. of Riverside and Carl T. Curtis of Kingman, Ariz.; nine grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Private family services are planned.

SUN CITY ---- Marie Elizabeth Novell, 60, died Thursday, Nov. 27, 2003, at Menifee Valley Medical Center.

Born Nov. 3, 1943, in Los Angeles, she lived in Sun City for 10 years. She was a human resource interviewer for the Railroad Retirement Board. She received a bachelor's degree from UCLA in 1965. She enjoyed reading.

Ms. Novell is survived by her mother, Enid Elizabeth Novell of Sun City; brother, Donald Novell of Simi Valley; and niece, Gia Novell of Orange.

Her cremains will be scattered at sea off the coast of Orange County.

Garry Paul, 61

MENIFEE ---- Garry Lynn Paul, 61, died Friday, Nov. 28, 2003, at his home.

Born Feb. 22, 1942, in Medina, Ohio, he lived in Menifee for 10 years. He was a truck driver for Plastic Industries Inc. in Garden Grove for 18 years. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1959 to 1965. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Buena Park. He was a Harley motorcycle enthusiast.

Mr. Paul was preceded in death by his parents, George and Louise Dent Paul. He is survived by his wife, Angie J. Paul of Menifee; sons Chris Paul and Cory Paul, both of Corona; stepdaughter, Anita Wilson of Brookpark, Ohio; brother, Dennis Paul of Lakewood, Ohio; sister, Kay Keller of Rock Springs, Wyo.; and two grandchildren.

Visitation is scheduled from 6 to 8 p.m. and funeral service at 8 p.m. today, Dec. 2, at Miller-Jones Mortuary & Crematory, 26770 Murrieta Road in Sun City. Private interment will be held at a later date.
