Friends of library host storyteller, fiddle player

TEMECULA - The Friends of the Temecula Library will sponsor the following programs this month:

  • Karen Rae Kraut, a professional storyteller, will present "The Year of the Monkey," stories and folktales celebrating the Chinese New Year, at 4 p.m. today at the Temecula Library, 41000 County Center Drive. The program is geared for all ages.

  • Daniel Slosberg will impersonate Pierre Cruzatte, a fiddle player on the Lewis and Clark expedition, at the Jan. 20 family program. Slosberg will play fiddle, jaw harp, bones, spoons and other instruments of the expedition at the program, titled "Pierre Cruzatte: A Musical Journey Along the Lewis & Clark Trail." The program begins at 4 p.m. at the library. . The program is geared for all ages.

  • A new "Bilingual Storytime" program begins this month. The series features 30 minutes of Spanish and English stories and songs for children ages 3 to 7. It is at 10 a.m. Saturdays through February at the library.

    Lecture, family fun planned

    TEMECULA - The Temecula Valley Museum will host a lecture on "Cameras in Our Collection: Photographs & Memorabilia" at 6 p.m. Thursday at the museum. The exhibit runs from Saturday through Feb. 29.

    In addition, residents can make a memory album at the museum Family Day from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday. Supplies will be provided.

    The Temecula Valley Museum is at 28314 Mercedes St.

    Fair seeks area talent

    INDIO - Show off a talent for a chance at prize money totaling $30,000 at the Riverside County Fair & National Date Festival.

    The fair is scheduled for Feb. 13 to 22 in Indio, and more than 7,000 county residents are expected to take part in the Competitive Exhibit Program.

    Opportunities range from the performing and visual arts to agriculture and horticulture.

    The deadline to apply is 5 p.m. Jan. 15. Download an entry form at www.datefest.org.

    Authors to be guest speakers

    LAKE ELSINORE - Two local authors will be the guest speakers at the Elsinore Woman's Club meeting Thursday.

    Authors Betty J. Hunt and Helen Auriela-Smith worked at the California Institution for Women in Corona and later collaborated on "A Chilling Absence of Love" and "A Cut Above."

    The books will be available for purchase at the meeting for $10 apiece. The program begins at 1 p.m. at the clubhouse, 710 W.

    Graham Ave. Beforehand, club members will hold social hour at 10 a.m., followed by the business meeting at 11 and lunch at noon.

    Genealogy group meets Monday

    TEMECULA - The Temecula Valley Genealogical Society will meet at 6:45 p.m. Monday at the Temecula Library, 41000 County Center Drive.

    Speaker Richard Wilson will discuss "Comparing Genealogical Programs."

    Senior singles club to hold house party

    MURRIETA - The Country Club Crowd for senior singles will hold a house party from 2 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the home of Donna Engle.

    Members and guests will be able to socialize, take part in a 50/50 drawing and play card games such as poker and bunco. Pizza, salad, dessert, coffee and snacks will be served; partygoers should bring their own beverages.

    Artist to critique others' artwork

    TEMECULA - The Temecula Valley Art League will meet at 7 p.m. Jan. 20 at the Mary Phillips Senior Center, 41845 Sixth St.

    A Temecula artist will provide a demonstration at the meeting, and club members may bring one or two of their pieces for critique by the featured artist.

    Newcomers' Club to hold luncheon

    TEMECULA - The Temecula Valley Newcomers' Club will hold its monthly luncheon and meeting at 11 a.m. Jan. 19 at the Embassy Suites Hotel.

    The menu includes chicken cordon bleu over wild rice and baby vegetables, plus carrot cake for dessert. The Baker's Dozen, a group of barbershop singers, leads the program.

    TEMECULA - Pt Cruisers of Inland Valley plans an excursion Saturday to the Route 66 Mother Road Museum in Barstow.

    Garden society to discuss herbs

    MURRIETA - Virginia Murphy of the Herboretum in Temecula will be the guest speaker at the Tuesday meeting of the Murrieta Garden Society.

    Murphy will discuss "Herbs: Gardens of Delight," detailing the uses of garden-grown herbs, including in cooking and in gifts.

    Local Green Party to meet Sunday

    SUN CITY - The Green Party of Riverside County, Southwest chapter, will meet from 12:30 to 3 p.m. Sunday at the Sun City Library, 26982 Cherry Hills Blvd.

    On the agenda is Senate Bill 921, a single-payer health care measure to be presented to the Assembly, as well animal rights, the peace movement and the party's plans in the new year.

    Cha-cha classes begin this month

    TEMECULA - John Irwin Dancing plans cha-cha classes this month.

    Wednesday classes will be held from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today through Jan. 28 at the Temecula Community Recreation Center, 30875 Rancho Vista Road. The cost is $20 per person.

    Thursday classes will be held from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Jan. 15 through 29 at Murrieta Elementary School, 24725 Adams Ave. The cost is $15.

    Art classes form in Temecula

    TEMECULA - Artist Pam Benson is teaching classes at The Painting Goose.

    Beginning watercolor classes will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. Mondays and 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesdays. A four-week session costs $60.

    Drawing classes for children in third through fifth grade will be 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. Mondays, and the session fee is $38.
