Tutors sought

TEMECULA - Families in the Temecula Valley need tutors, respite care providers and community recreation coaches for autistic children.

The organization Families and Autistic Children Together Succeed, or FACTS, will provide orientation and training. Pay starts at $8.50 per hour for five to 15 hours per week.

To apply, send name, phone number and mailing address to FACTSKIDS@aol.com by Saturday. Orientation will be held from 3 to 6 p.m. Monday and Tuesday at the Temecula Community Recreation Center.

Shelter to celebrate 15 years

WILDOMAR - Animal Friends of the Valleys will celebrate its 15th anniversary with an open house Saturday.

Officials will give an update on the new shelter, which is expected to break ground this year. They also will give tours of the shelter. Refreshments and cake will be served.

The open house is set for 1 to 3 p.m. at the shelter, 33751 Mission Trail. For information, call 471-8344.

Singles group plan house party

MURRIETA - The Country Club Crowd for senior singles will hold a house party from 2 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the home of Donna Engle.

Members and guests will be able to socialize, take part in a 50/50 drawing and play card games such as poker and bunco. Pizza, salad, dessert, coffee and snacks will be served; partygoers should bring their own beverages.

Best Years club meets for dinner

MURRIETA - Best Years 55+ Senior Singles meets for dinner at 6 p.m. the first Wednesday of each month at the Sizzler restaurant on Murrieta Hot Springs Road and Interstate 15.

The club is designed to provide senior singles an opportunity to socialize with one another, and members include residents of Temecula, Murrieta, Sun City, Lake Elsinore, Wildomar and Canyon Lake. Besides the monthly dinner, organizers plan activities such as house parties, day trips, weekend getaways and miniature golf.

Recreation center hosts yoga classes

TEMECULA - The Temecula Community Recreation Center hosts the following yoga classes on Thursdays.

Each series is five weeks long and costs $48:

  • "Yoga: Find the Power" at 9:15 a.m.

  • "Mommy & Baby Yoga" at 10:30 a.m.

  • "Lunchtime Fitness Yoga" at noon.

  • "Yoga After Work or Long Commute" at 7:30 p.m.

    Lake Elsinore has classes in tennis

    LAKE ELSINORE - The city offers tennis classes at its new courts at Creekside Park, 3200 Lost Road.

    Junior beginning tennis will be held from 3 to 5 p.m. Mondays, while junior intermediate tennis is from 3 to 5 p.m. Thursdays.

    Junior tennis classes are for children in sixth through eighth grades.

    Beginning tennis for adults is 6:30 to 8 p.m. Mondays.

    Braille Institute van in Temecula

    TEMECULA - The Braille Institute will send its specialized van to Temecula on Wednesday for people who cannot travel to the center's Rancho Mirage location.

    The Mobile Solutions van has high-powered magnifiers, closed-circuit televisions and other equipment to maximize remaining vision. People can also buy items such as adaptive kitchen utensils and talking watches.

    Officials will offer free low-vision consultations and information on the institute's library service.

    The van will be at the Mary Phillips Senior Center, 41845 Sixth St., from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. For information, call (760) 321-1111.

    Art classes to begin in Temecula

    TEMECULA - Artist Gabriele Baber will teach art classes through the Temecula Community Services Department:

  • Oil painting, 9 a.m. Thursdays, $90 for six weeks.

  • Creative drawing for ages 7 to 11, 4 to 5:10 p.m. Wednesdays, $55 for five weeks.

  • "Learn to Draw" for ages 12 and up, 5:15 to 6:30 p.m. Wednesdays, $55 for six weeks.

    Meeting to focus on meditation

    WILDOMAR - The Cafh Foundation, which seeks to integrate spirituality into everyday life, will hold an introductory meditation and meeting on "How Is Meditation Different From Reflection and Prayer?"

    Church to hold calendar party

    TEMECULA - Rancho Community Church will host a calendar party at 7 p.m. next Friday.

    Monday blood drive planned at lodge

    WILDOMAR - Lake Elsinore Elks Lodge 2591 will host a blood drive from 1:30 to 5:30 p.m. Monday at 33700 Mission Trail.

    Lewis and Clark musical journey set

    TEMECULA - Daniel Slosberg will impersonate Pierre Cruzatte, a fiddle player on the Lewis and Clark expedition, at the Temecula Library on Jan. 20.

    Slosberg will play fiddle, jaw harp, bones, spoons and other instruments of the expedition at the family program, titled "Pierre Cruzatte: A Musical Journey Along the Lewis & Clark Trail." The program begins at 4 p.m. at the library. The program is geared for all ages.

    Families to make memory albums

    TEMEUCLA - Residents can make a memory album at Family Day on Saturday at the Temecula Valley Museum.

    Golf tournament benefits Red Cross

    RANCHO MIRAGE - Proceeds from an upcoming golf tournament at Mission Hills Country Club will benefit the disaster relief fund of the American Red Cross, Riverside County chapter.

    The shotgun start for the March 1 tournament is 12:30 p.m. Following the tournament, there will be an awards dinner with entertainment, raffles, and silent and live auctions. The cost is $400 per player, and the registration deadline is Jan. 31. Call Steve Jacobson at (760) 324-9400, Ext. 216.

    Poster entries being accepted

    TEMECULA - The deadline to enter the Temecula Valley Balloon & Wine Festival poster contest is next Friday. The winning entry for the contest will be featured on this year's souvenir poster and program.

    Exhibitors to put talent on display

    INDIO - Show off a talent for a chance at prize money totaling $30,000 at the Riverside County Fair & National Date Festival.

    The fair is scheduled for Feb. 13 to 22 in Indio, and more than 7,000 county residents are expected to take part in the Competitive Exhibit Program. Opportunities range from the performing and visual arts to agriculture and horticulture.

    Teens to learn how to manage anger

    TEMECULA - Safe Alternatives For Everyone offers an anger management course for teens.

    The 12-week-long program is designed to teach teenagers the coping skills they need to refrain from acting out in violence. It is held from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. Wednesdays at the S.A.F.E. office in the Temecula Community Center. Although the program began this week, teens can sign up over the next couple of weeks.

    The cost is $75; families who cannot pay will not be denied service. Call 587-3900 to sign up.

    'Souped-up' party set in Idyllwild

    IDYLLWILD - The Idyllwild Chamber of Commerce will host the inaugural

    WinterFest Celebration on Jan. 17 and 18.

    The celebration will feature a Soup Walk on Jan. 17 and an After Christmas Craft Fair on Jan. 18.

    The Soup Walk will be held from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. with local businesses serving up the homemade soups. Event-goers will serve as the judges. Tickets to the walk are actually limited-edition soup mugs painted by artist Eileen Roberts and cost $10.

    The craft fair is set for 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Town Hall on Cedar Street.

    Fourteen crafters will sell items such as artificial-flower arrangements, goats milk soap and jams.
