SAN DIEGO - Bernie Rhinerson, the chairman of the San Diego County Water Authority, was chosen to lead a national coalition to advocate for desalination, officials said today.

Rhinerson was elected chairman of the United States Desalination Coalition during the coalition's annual board meeting Feb. 3, the group said.

Water agencies and utilities from Southern California, Florida and Texas formed the coalition to push for an increased federal role in seawater and groundwater desalination.

"This coalition of water agencies is raising the visibility of desalination at the federal level as a viable and important resource for meeting future water demands," Rhinerson said.

San Diego water officials want desalination to provide up to 15 percent of the region's water supply by 2020.
