Workshop set on diffusing conflict

FALLBROOK ---- Hilltop Center will present a workshop on Compassionate Communication as part of the Season for Nonviolence from noon to 3 p.m. April 4 at the center at 331 E. Elder St.

Facilitator will be Kelly Bryson, who has served in Bosnia, Northern Ireland and Israel. He does training and consulting in corporations, schools and organizations. He uses humor, music, stories and playfulness to teach the basic tools to transform potential conflicts into peaceful dialogues.

Parent information night planned

FALLBROOK ---- The Fallbrook High School PTSA will sponsor a parent information night at 7 p.m. April 7 in Room 201 at the high school.

Lisa Bloomfield, vice principal, will discuss testing. Topics will include the STAR test and the California Exit Exam. She will discuss what the STAR test is and how it is used, why parents should encourage students to do well on the test. She also will talk about the future of the California Exit Exam.

Travis Benintendo, activities director, will discuss activities planned for the rest of the year. He has invited vendors from companies that provide limousine service and tuxedos to bring information for parents. Students will model evening wear appropriate for the prom. This is a preview of the fashion show to be given for the student body the following day.

John Deavers, vice principal, will speak on plans for graduation, including the ceremony and the grad night trip to Disneyland.

9/11 survivor to address Fallbrook Republican women

FALLBROOK ---- Joy Shepard, who survived the Sept. 11, 2001 attack on the World Trade Center, will be guest speaker at the Fallbrook Republican Women Federated brunch at 9:30 a.m. April 9 at the Fallbrook Golf Club, 2757 Gird Road.

She was at the center to complete training for Morgan Stanley and will share her story of how she made her way down many floors of steps to safety. She has a bachelor's degree in mathematics from CSU Los Angeles, a master's degree in counseling from San Diego State University and a masters in business administration from National University.

She and her husband, Allan, live in Olivenhain and have three adult sons, David, John and Steven. She continues to work for Morgan Stanley.

Members have begun working on baskets for its June fashion show, which raises funds for the organization's scholarship fund. The theme is movie titles. Ones started so far include "Summertime," "Born on the 4th of July," "Our Town" and "Out of Africa."

Items needed for the baskets include books, patriotic cookbooks, garden tools, jewelry, wines, crystal items, bowls, candy dishes, vases, gift certificates, bath items,, candy, golf items, teapots and tea, gourmet coffee, cups, mugs, picnic basket and picnic items, photo albums, sun items, hats, sunscreen, kitchen items and other items.

Women's health clinic to open

FALLBROOK ---- Community Health Systems, Inc. and the Fallbrook Family Health Center announce the opening of the Women's Health Clinic at 325 N. Brandon Road, Suite D. The grand opening is scheduled for 3 to 7 p.m. April 8, and the clinic will start seeing patients on Monday, April 12, 2004. Appointments can be made by calling (760) 728-3816. Crafts, pet show on tap at library

    Bishop to visit Trinity Episcopal Church

    ESCONDIDO ---- Trinity Episcopal Church will celebrate the Passion of Jesus with an official visit by the bishop of San Diego, the Right Rev. Gethin Hughes on April 4, Palm Sunday.     Pancake breakfast on tap

    DEL DIOS ---- The community of Del Dios/Mt. Israel will host a pancake breakfast from 9 a.m. to noon April 4 at the old firehouse, 20155 Elm Lane off of the Del Dios Highway.     'Vikings' seminar to begin April 10

    VALLEY CENTER ---- The Friends of the Valley Center Branch of the San Diego County Library will continue its "People Teaching People" workshop series at the library with a four-part seminar called "The Vikings: Debunking Some Myths."

    Learn to grow, market blueberries

    SAN DIEGO ---- The San Diego Fellow Calligraphers will meet at 7 p.m. April 9 in Mission Valley. Carrie Imai will present "Neuland Plus: 3 Alphabets in an Evening." The group also will play with some new and innovative tools, allowing calligraphers to create a range of letters from transparent to bold.     Nativescapes garden tour set

    NORTH COUNTY ---- Take a guided tour of the California Nativescapes Botanical Garden at the San Diego Wild Animal Park at 10 a.m. April 10. The trail to the garden entrance passes Condor Ridge and the Baja Garden. Allow 10 to 15 minutes to reach the garden from the trail's start near the monorail entrance. Comfortable walking shoes are advisable, as well as sun protection. The tour is free with admission to the Wild Animal Park.

    Participants will be guided to the various areas of the garden, including desert, coastal sage scrub, montaigne and the shady riparian area with its seasonal stream, where information will be provided about the trees, shrubs and wild flowers in each of the 10 plant communities.

    Handweavers group to meet

    Chorus searches for director

    ESCONDIDO ---- The Champagne Village Chorus is searching for a choir director and piano accompanist. The group is looking for a director who is a musician and is trained in choral work and directing. The director would be responsible for selecting music for rehearsals and performances. This is a volunteer position with the possibility of reimbursement of travel expenses.

    The piano accompanist should be experienced in choral work and have worked with a director. This also is a volunteer position.

    The mixed chorus is a group of 25 to 30 people who live in Champagne Village and love to sing. Some members have had substantial training and others do not read music. The group meets once or twice a month and has a large library of music.

    The goal of the chorus is to present a Christmas program for friends and neighbors in the Village Hall.

    Docents sought for Kumeyaay-Ipai Interpretive Center

    POWAY ---- The Friends of the Kumeyaay organization is accepting applications for volunteer docents to lead interpretive tours at the Kumeyaay-Ipai Interpretive Center of Pauwai. The archeological site is at 13104 Silver Lake Drive in Poway.

    Docents lead public tours on weekends and assist with school tours during the week. Last year, more than 42 groups of school children visited the site. The docents also held an all-day Kumeyaay Educational Program, which was attended by more than 60 children.

    Adults ages 18 or older can apply to become docents.     Palomar College to host Dr. Richard Lederer

    SAN MARCOS ---- Palomar College will present an "Evening of Language and Laughter With Dr. Richard Lederer" from 7 to 9 p.m. May 3 in the Howard Brubeck Theatre on campus, 1140 W. Mission Road.

    Lederer is the author of 18 books and more than 3,000 articles about language and humor, and is the co-host of KPBS radio's "A Way with Words." Palomar students and the community are invited to attend the event, which will benefit the college's tutoring center.

    North County Lifeline offers mediation

    North County Lifeline, Inc., a local nonprofit organization, offers free mediation services to North County residents through the Dispute Resolution Program. Mediation is a private, voluntary process in which a neutral third party assists parties in resolving their dispute. No decisions are made by the mediator. Participants control the outcome of their own case. The goal is to help parties in dispute reach a mutually satisfying agreement, without litigation when possible.     Widows and Widowers Club meets

    The North County Widows and Widowers Club provides widows and widowers an opportunity to meet others who have faced or are facing a similar life adjustment.     Easter egg hunt in Carlsbad Company

    CARLSBAD ---- The Carlsbad Company Stores will host an Easter egg treasure hunt at 10 a.m. April 10 that will be presided over by the Easter Bunny.     Egg-hunt volunteers sought in Encinitas

    ENCINITAS ---- The city of Encinitas is seeking volunteers to assist in the Spring Egg Hunt from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. April 10 at the Ecke Sports Park, 278 Saxony Road.

    The city is looking volunteers to help in all aspects of the event from helping spread out the eggs before each hunt, making sure children find all of the eggs and cleaning up after the hunt. A dozen volunteers are needed to help at the craft tent where children will make bunny baskets and tissue paper eggs. There will be spin art and lots of pictures to color.     Fund to support child's medical care

    CARLSBAD ---- The Carlsbad Police Officers Association has established a fund to support 5-year-old Corey Lucas, who was seriously injured when he was attacked Feb. 16 during an assault that led to the death of his great-grandfather and serious injury to his great-grandmother.

    It was Corey's response to a phone call that provided information about the attack and led to the dispatching of police and fire rescue personnel. Police say his composure and brave actions, though he was seriously wounded and bleeding, amazing. Corey spent more than a week in the hospital, where he required surgery to repair damage to his jaw and throat. His great uncle, Thomas Johnson, has been arrested for the attack.

    Donations to the fund will be used to help cover the cost of Corey's follow-up medical care. Excess funds will be used to establish an educational account in his name. Contributions to Corey Lucas fund can be made to any San Diego County branch of Washington Mutual Bank.     Play to benefit speech and debate team

    CARLSBAD ---- A benefit production of North Coast Repertory Theatre's current play, "The Fantasticks," will be held at 8 p.m. April 16. Proceeds will benefit La Costa Canyon High School's Speech and Debate Team and will help send students to compete in tournaments and fund scholarships for graduating seniors. A pre-performance demonstration by the team will precede the show at 7 p.m. in the courtyard of the theater.     Beach clean-up planned

    CARDIFF ---- Volunteers are needed for a clean-up to be held from 9 a.m. to noon April 3 at the San Elijo State Beach. The effort is part of the I Love a Clean San Diego's second Earth Day Creek to Bay Cleanup.     Junior Lifeguard registration to start

    SOLANA BEACH ---- Registration for the city of Solana Beach's Junior Lifeguard Program will start April 3 for children 10 to 17 years old. General registration for nonresidents will start April 19. Junior Lifeguards, one of San Diego County's longest running and most established water safety programs, is designed to develop self-esteem, lifesaving skills, physical fitness, respect and appreciation of the ocean environment.

    Women's Connection plans brunch

    College financial aid workshop set

    CARLSBAD ---- "How to Give Your Child a Four-Year College Education Without Going Broke" is the title of a workshop to be held from 7:15 to 8:45 p.m. April 8 at the Dove branch of the Carlsbad Library. The workshop will be led by Ron Caruthers, a leading expert on how to pay for college.

    Topics will include: how any family can double or triple their eligibility for grant money; secrets for sending your child to a fancy private school for less than the cost of a community college; and the single biggest mistake that nine out of 10 parents make when planning for college.     Leo Carrillo Park needs volunteers

    CARLSBAD ---- Leo Carrillo Ranch Historic Park needs volunteers to lead interpretive programs at the former working ranch of actor Leo Carrillo. Volunteers will lead tours and serve as hosts in the Visitors Center and Hacienda. Training is provided. Park hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sundays.     Maverick Stampede planned

    CARLSBAD ---- La Costa Canyon High School's annual Maverick Stampede 5K Run/Walk is scheduled for 8 a.m. April 18. The race will begin and end on the campus. A portion of the run will be held throughout the surrounding community and on city streets, free of traffic.

    A free pancake breakfast will be served and awards will be given to first- through third-place prize winners in each age category.Proceeds will benefit La Costa Canyon teams, clubs and programs. A portion of entry fees may be designated to a team or club of choice.

    Local artist part of national exhibit

    The work of artist and Carlsbad resident Carol E. Lang is part of a national exhibition in basketry on display until April 18 at the New Hampshire Institute of Art in Manchester, N.H. The exhibition is titled "Traditional Craft/Contemporary Art" and includes 83 baskets by 54 artists from throughout the country as well as Russia and Switzerland and is a comprehensive view of work done today, from functional to sculptural. Lang's piece is titled "Sushi V" and combines slab-rolled ceramics, fired in the ancient Japanese technique, raku.

    Chipotle to thank military families

    As a thank-you to the members of the U.S. armed forces, Chipotle Mexican Grill restaurants in San Diego County will offer a free burrito (or other food item) to any military personnel (with ID) and their families all day April 3.

    USABDA plans dance social

    ENCINITAS ---- The San Diego chapter of the United States Amateur Ballroom Dance Association will hold its April Dance Social from 7 p.m. to midnight April 3 at Dance North County, 535 Encinitas Blvd., Suite 100.

    Blood drive planned for April 5

    POWAY ---- The San Diego Blood Bank bloodmobile will accept donations at a blood drive hosted by Sav-on Drugs from 2 to 7 p.m. April 5 at 12358 Poway Road. The bloodmobile will be in the parking lot.

    All donors at this drive will receive a limited-edition "Are You My Type" T-shirt; a voucher for a free 30-minute massage courtesy of Just For Your Health Therapeutic Massage in San Marcos; and a medical history review and mini physical, which includes blood pressure, pulse, temperature and iron-level checks. Donors also can enter a drawing to win one of several pairs of tickets to a Padres home game at Petco Park in May.

    Teen employment workshop, job fair set

    POWAY ---- The city will present a Teen Employment Workshop and Job Fair from 3 to 7 p.m. April 7 at the Poway Community Park Auditorium, 13094 Civic Center Drive. The event is open to teenagers ages 16 to 19.

    The Teen Employment Workshop portion, which is scheduled from 3 to 5 p.m., will feature guest speakers covering topics such as "Filling Out an Application," "Resume Writing," "Interview Skills," "Public Sector Employment" and "Work Ethics." The speakers come from a wide range of expertise, including the Poway Chamber of Commerce, the city of Poway, Poway Unified School District, Cal State San Marcos and San Diego Workforce Partnership. The panel will make a presentation, which will be followed by a question-and-answer session.

    At the Job Fair, to be held from 5 to 7 p.m., teens will have the opportunity to meet with prospective employers and enjoy refreshments. Representatives from agencies such as the North County Soccer Park, San Diego Wild Animal Park, McDonald's and the city of Poway will be on hand to recruit for employees and answer questions.     Kids' Day set for April 3

    SAN MARCOS ---- The first Kids' Day, benefiting the children of San Marcos, will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. April 3 in the parking lot of Wells Fargo bank, 1000 W. San Marcos Blvd.

    The purpose of the event is to provide free finger-printed photo ID cards for children, courtesy of the San Marcos Sheriff's Station, the Century 21 "Lopez Team," Chicago Title and Wells Fargo Bank.

    In addition, the San Marcos Fire Department will have a fire truck on a display for children to tour and there will be a fun jump and free hot dogs and sodas.     Cold Stone to hold grand-opening event

    SAN MARCOS ---- A grand-opening celebration will be held April 3 for the new Cold Stone Creamery store in the Nordahl Marketplace at 708 Center Drive, Suite 101.

    Mayor Corky Smith will cut the official ribbon at 2 p.m., and Dalton's Burgers will provide music and $1 hamburges and hot dogs from 1 to 4. Throughout the day, Miss San Marcos Melanie Umadhay and her court will mix up ice cream creations behind the granite stone, and visitors will receive a free waffle bowl with each ice cream purchase.

    Hike to Santa Rosa Plateau offered

    The city of San Marcos' Community Services Department will sponsor a hike to the Santa Rosa Plateau at 9 a.m. April 3.

    The easy, 4- to 6-mile hike will explore the vernal pools and the old adobe homestead of the Santa Rosa Plateau, a future state preserve. San Marcos Parks and Recreation hike leaders will provide an overview of the recreational, biological and geological features of the area. A donation of $2 per adult and $1 per child is required for entry.

    Participants should meet at the Santa Rosa Plateau Ecological Reserve. Take Highway 15 north past Temecula and exit on Clinton Keith Road. Turn left and drive about seven miles to the intersection of Tenaja and Via Volcano. Follow Via Volcano for about one mile to the Vernal Pool trail head on the left. Park on the side of the road.

    Sign in at the meeting location; advanced reservations not required. Participants are encouraged to bring water and trail snacks and wear waffle-soled shoes. Minors must be accompanied by an adult.

    Finish an oil painting in one day

    VISTA ---- Finish an entire oil painting in just one three-hour class offered through the city of Vista's Recreation Division. All the materials are supplied, including paints, brushes and canvas. The instructor, Rita Forand, has been painting for nine years and is a certified Bob Ross instructor.

    Class is for ages 16 and up and is held from 1 to 4 p.m. or 6 to 9 p.m. The next session is April 26 at the Wildwood Community Center, 651 E. Vista Way.     Alzheimer's topic of Vista Woman's Club meeting

    Author to speak at library

    OCEANSIDE ---- Richard Lederer, well-known author, humorist and self-proclaimed "verbivore," will entertain and enlighten listeners as the featured speaker for Oceanside Public Library's special "Books That Made the Difference" program from 6:30 to 9 p.m. April 22 in the Oceanside City Council Chambers, City Hall North, 300 N. Coast Highway.

    The free program will begin with recognition of some of the most outstanding entries received during the "Books That Made the Difference" project this winter, followed by Dr. Lederer's discussion of how books and libraries change lives.     Outrigger race needs teams

    OCEANSIDE ---- The PaoPao Outrigger Canoe Club is encouraging local businesses and organizations to enter teams in this year's sixth Annual Aloha Challenge race at the Oceanside Harbor on April 17. The outrigger club provides the canoes, the paddles and the steersman for the more than 100 competitors who come from all over North County to enjoy the race.

    Paddling in crews of five members each in Hawaiian-style canoes, teams can be made up of families, friends and co-workers. A special Armed Services Division has been added to show continued support for the men and women stationed at Camp Pendleton and nearby bases.

    The recreational contest matches like teams against each other in short and exciting regatta-style races held in the harbor basin. The event provides fun and healthy interaction for participants while promoting and establishing teambuilding and communication skills. Participants receive a commemorative T-shirt and lunch as part of the $25 entry fee, with extra shirts and lunches available for spectators at a small price.     Ivey Ranch golf tournament needs players

    OCEANSIDE ---- Ivey Ranch Park Association for the Disabled will hold its ninth Annual Golf Marathon from 6:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. April 26 at Emerald Isle Golf Course. The world record for the most holes played on an executive course in one day was originally set at this event and is still held by Jack Feller of Oceanside.

    Chipotle restaurants support MS Walk

    The National Multiple Sclerosis Society reported that two Chipotle restaurants, one in Encinitas at 269 N. El Camino Real and one in Oceanside at 2611 Vista Way, donated more than 300 gourmet burritos at its recent San Diego County Credit Union MS Walk, held at Legoland. Chipotle managers Louise Johnson of Encinitas and Will Sutton of Oceanside cut the chicken, steak and vegetarian burritos in thirds for many of the 3,438 MC Walk participants, who helped raise $489,000 for MS research and services to people with the disease.
