Residents ask for special panel on copper

MURRIETA ---- The Murrieta County Water District will consider Wednesday allowing a grass-roots citizens panel to help combat high levels of copper in tap water throughout the district.
The district's board of directors rejected the request at its meeting April 13 on technical grounds, saying the item was not placed on the agenda properly, and therefore could not be approved. Board President Mike Matteson apologized for not properly putting the request on the agenda, but said the board will consider it at its next meeting. The board, which usually meets Tuesdays, will meet at 7 p.m. Wednesday at 42290 Ivy St.
The residents asked the board to form the panel, saying they can monitor trends and make recommendations on fighting the copper problem.
State health officials advised the district in July 2002 that residents in 33 homes off Washington Avenue should not drink their water because of high copper levels. Since then, the problem has spread. Ingesting excessive copper can cause gastrointestinal problems, and over many years, can cause liver and kidney damage, according to the state Department of Health Services.
