Mother-daughter tea planned

Head Start accepting applications

De Luz Ecology Center plans open house

FALLBROOK ---- The De Luz Ecology Center, which is part of the Fallbrook Union Elementary School District, will have an open house from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. May 1 to celebrate the completion of this year's fifth-grade outdoor education program. The center is on De Luz-Murrieta Road, 11 miles north of Fallbrook.

District students who participated in the three-day program are encouraged to visit with their family and friends. The public is welcome. People are encouraged to bring a picnic lunch.

Columnist to address historians

FALLBROOK ---- The Fallbrook Historical Society will have a free chocolate and tea event at 1 p.m. May 8 at The Grand Tradition at 1602 S. Mission Road. Guest speaker will be North County Times columnist Tom Morrow.

Historical society members will present information regarding plans to build a barn used to house artifacts and provide space for the organization. The Grand Tradition will provide its facility, refreshments and a Sephra Chocolate fountain flowing with Belgian chocolate for dipping fruit and vegetables. The New Tenor Tones will provide music.

Fallbrook Quilt Guild plans May programs

FALLBROOK ---- The Fallbrook Quilt Guild will meet at 6:30 p.m. May 6 at Fallbrook Community Center, 341 Heald Lane. The program will be a "girl's night out" with a poker-style game. Linda Ballard will serve as pit boss, and women will play a short version of the card game using fabric strips as chips. Participants should bring 2 1/2-inch by 42-inch fabric strips. People also are encouraged to bring quilts made from strips for display.

The guild's workshop will take place from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. May 8 at the Fallbrook Public Utility District building, 990 E. Mission Road. Ballard will conduct a workshop, using the pattern "A Tisket, a Tasket," which is a traditional design of blocks on point in vertical rows separated by strips of a focus fabric. Garden club plans meeting

Trout derby on tap for weekend

ESCONDIDO ---- The Hidden Valley Kiwanis Club will host a trout derby from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. May 1 and 6 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. May 2 at Dixon Lake. The city and the Senior Anglers of Escondido will help the Kiwanians with their annual fund-raising event.

A special tagged trout prize of $15,000 to be used towards the purchase of a vehicle will be sponsored by North County Ford. The grand prize for the largest trout caught during the weekend is a $500 gift certificate sponsored by the Bait and Tackle Shop.

First-, second- and third-place prizes will be awarded each day in both the adult and junior divisions. Senior Anglers members will help participants ages 8 and younger at a free children's trout pond. Raffle prizes, food, drinks and T-shirts also will be available.

Elks to meet, host Mother's Day program

Guided hikes set at Daley Ranch

ESCONDIDO ---- Free, guided nature hikes are offered at Daley Ranch. All trails include steep and/or slippery sections. Bring at least a quart of water and wear a sun hat, sunscreen and hiking boots or treaded footwear. Youths younger than 18 must be with an adult. No pets are allowed.   • 9 a.m. May 2: Join naturalist Simone Green on a moderate, 3 1/2-mile "More Walk, Less Talk" walk on Boulder Loop Trail.

  • 9 a.m. May 8: Naturalist Dorothy Klitzing will lead a 3 1/2-mile "Wild, Wild West" walk and talk about past cattle use and current animals found on the ranch.

  • 7:30 a.m. May 15: Join naturalist Don Parnell for an occasionally strenuous, 2.5 mph, 21-mile hike and see several different fire-rejuvenated micro-environments. The "Total Ranch Experience" hike will take about nine hours to complete. There will be three planned snack and rest stops, with water/restroom stops at about the third and sixth hours. Dress appropriately for the weather.

    Arts center to offer free events

    ESCONDIDO ---- The Danza Azteca Xochipilli dance troupe will give a free performance at 4 p.m. May 5 at the California Center for the Arts, Escondido, as part of the Wells Fargo First Wednesdays series. Tickets are not required; seating is on a first-come, first-served basis. Doors open at 3 p.m. with seating beginning at 3:30.

    Since 1987 Danza Azteca Xochipilli has performed traditional dance that began thousands of years ago and has been passed on from generation to generation. Each dance is accompanied by live music play on authentic wind and percussion instruments.

    Also that day, admission will be free to the museum to see the new exhibit, Niki de Saint Phalle: California Dreaming. Museum hours are from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

    Democracy for America meetup set

    ESCONDIDO ---- North County Inland Democracy for America supporters will host a Democracy for America meetup at 7 p.m. May 5 at Marie Callender's restaurant, 515 W. 13th St. Arrive for dinner between 6:30 and 7.

    The group will host the challengers to Republican incumbent Reps. Darrell Issa and Randy "Duke" Cunningham ---- Mike Byron and Francine Busby, respectively.     Boys & Girls Club seeks auction items

    ESCONDIDO ---- The Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater San Diego is soliciting items for its 22nd annual bidforkids.com benefit auction set for May 8 at the Boys & Girls Club, 115 W. Woodward Ave.

    New and previously owned items in good condition, such as professional services, electronic items, gift certificates, concert tickets, time shares and other donations are being accepted.

    Cash sponsorships are available and attendees can purchase a Cadillac Table for $1,000, a Thunderbird Table for $750 or tickets for two for $150.

    This year's event, themed "The Fabulous '50s," will begin at 5:30 p.m. with a silent and walking auction. Dinner is set for 7 followed by the live auction and cash drawing.

    Swimathon to benefit cancer organizations

    Swim a Mile for Mom, a noncompetitive fund-raising pledge event for swimmers of all ages and abilities, will be held May 2, the Sunday before Mother's Day, at Mt. Carmel High School in Rancho Penasquitos.

    Proceeds from the swimathon will benefit two local nonprofit organizations that provide free services to women with cancer ---- Y-ME San Diego and Team Survivor San Diego. Y-ME offers free early detection clinics, helps women without insurance find medical services, operates support programs and a bilingual hotline and conducts breast health education classes for local high school students and women residing in rehabilitation centers. Team Survivor provides free yoga and water aerobics programs for women with a past or present diagnosis of cancer.

    Floral Design Forum to meet

    CARLSBAD ---- The Floral Design Forum will hold its final session for the 2003-04 year from 12:30 to 3 p.m. May 3 at the Woman's Club of Carlsbad, 3320 Monroe St.

    Shirl Eastman, a Valley Center resident, creative designer and instructor, will be the guest designer. She will share her tips and demonstrate techniques that apply to both flower show exhibitions and in-home decorating.

    Palomar College's Wine & Dine benefit set

    CARLSBAD ---- The ninth annual Palomar College Foundation Wine & Dine fund-raiser will be held at 5:30 p.m. May 8 at the Four Seasons Resort Aviara. Proceeds will go toward student scholarships and college programs requiring outside funding.

    The event will feature premium wine tasting from award-winning wineries, entertainment, live and silent auctions, dancing to the soft jazz sounds of the Fabulous Offbeats and dinner.

    Women's Spring Fling set at church

    SAN MARCOS ---- Colleen Swindoll, daughter of renowned Christian author and Bible teacher Charles Swindoll, will be the keynote speaker at Valley Bible Church's annual Women's Spring Fling to be held from 6:30 to 9 p.m. May 7 at the church, 1609 Capalina Road.

    The event will include dinner, dessert, music, drama, raffle baskets and a silent auction. Swindoll's message, along with the other events of the evening, will revolve around the theme "Trading Spaces."

    "I will be talking about trading spaces ... how often we desire to trade spaces with someone else who seems to have it all together," Swindoll said." Swindoll also will share part of her own story.

    Palomar students display art in SD

    SAN DIEGO ---- Patrons of the Bread & Cie Bakery in Hillcrest can sip coffee and enjoy not only bakery items but beautiful and thought-provoking art created by Palomar College art students.

    The mural-like display covering the Bread & Cie walls this month is the result of a collaboration of eight painters that began three years ago in the Palomar College Saturday art class taught by Martha Matthews. The artists are Judy Beck, Nancy Brown, Jo Ann El Assal, Trudy Keimel, Loretta Mosher, Kathy Nordrehaug, Kent Smolik and Matthews. Each artist previously has been juried in competitive shows. Some have gallery representation and others have sold work and won awards.

    The paintings of various shapes and sizes include bold representations of eyes, coffee cups and animal teeth along with whimsical, colorful landscapes and abstract shapes. Some of the resulting artwork was included in the 2003 Spring Student Show at Palomar's Boehm Gallery.

    The Bread & Cie Bakery is at Fourth Street and University in San Diego. The exhibit will be on display through May 4.

    Business Network plans open house

    CARLSBAD ---- The Carlsbad Business Network is an organization of coastal North County business people dedicated to the ideals of bettering their careers through the exchange of social and professional contacts.     Crystal Apple Awards planned

    Students will honor teachers at May 5 at the 10th annual Crystal Apple Awards, sponsored by San Diego North Coast members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.

    CARLSBAD ---- Carlsbad Wave Soccer has announced its try-out schedule for competitive league teams, to take place at Magnolia Elementary School, 1905 Magnolia Ave. Try-outs for boys and girls in the 15 and younger and 16 and younger age groups are scheduled from 4 to 5:30 p.m. May 5.

    Boys and girls in the younger than 17, younger than 18 and younger than 19 categories will try out from 4 to 5:30 p.m. May 6. Players in the younger than 11, 12 and 14 boys team and younger than 10, 11, 12 and 14 girls team are also needed. The team for boys younger than 10 has an opening for a goalie.     Aviara foundation plans golf tourney

    CARLSBAD ---- The Friends of Aviara Oaks middle and elementary schools will hold its third annual golf tournament May 3 at the El Camino Country Club in Oceanside.

    Proceeds will benefit the schoolsí technology and performing arts programs. Sponsors are needed to help underwrite the event.

    Rotary plans wine festival

    ENCINITAS ---- The Rotary Club of Encinitas will host its first Wine Festival from 5 to 8 p.m. May 1 at Quail Botanical Gardens. The event will be a celebration of international wines, local microbrews and cuisine, and will include local entertainment. Proceeds will benefit The LAMS Foundation, established to fight a rare lung disease affecting mostly women; and the Sudenese Refugee Network which supports The Los Boys of Sudan. Tickets cost $50 per person.

    Mayor's prayer breakfast planned

    ENCINITAS ---- The eleventh annual Mayor's Prayer Breakfast, held in cooperation with the San Dieguito Interfaith Ministerial Association and the city of Encinitas, will be held from 7:30 to 9 a.m. May 6 at the Encinitas Community Center, 1140 Oakcrest Park Drive.

    Members of the association will participate in the breakfast with guest speaker Laurin Pause, executive director of the Community Resource Center. Pause will offer an inspirational message titled "Bound Together by Love."

    Noetic sciences group to meet

    DEL MAR ---- The North County Coastal chapter of the Institute of Noetic Sciences invites all members of the community to take part in a social art experience: the art of Goethean conversation. The meeting is planned for 3 to 5 p.m. May 2 at 235 11th St.

    The presenter will be Bruce Laurelin, an expert in social awareness conference planning and presentation for more than 10 years. The Institute of Noetic Sciences was founded by Apollo 14 astronaut Edgard Mitchell, who had a transformative experience on the way back to earth.     Wings of Freedom Tour slated for C'Bad

    CARLSBAD ---- The Collings Foundation's Wings of Freedom Tour will roar into McClellan-Palomar Airport 10 a.m. May 3, 9 a.m. May 4 and May 5 with vintage World War II heavy bombers, the four-engine Boeing B-17 Flying FOrtree and Consolidated B-24 Liberator ---- all are accurately restored to their 1944 flyable configuration.

    The B-24 Liberator is the only one of its kind flying today anywhere in the world.

    During the display, vistors will be able to tour the aircraft for a small donation and see what it was like as a crewman during World War II. All positions about the aircraft are accurately restored with the original instruments, gun positions and equipment.

    In addition, visitors also may take the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to fly an actual mission aboard the B-17 or B-24 for 30 minutes at a tax-deductible donation of $400 per person. Call for reservation at (978) 562-9182.

    Musical Chairs Carnival planned

    RAMONA ---- The Little People's Learning Center at Ramona United Methodist Church will hold its Musical Chairs Carnival from 1 to 4 p.m. May 1 at the church, 3394 Chapel Lane.

    Cost is $5 per participant and all ages are encouraged to play. Cash prizes will be awarded to the first- and second-place winners. The event also will include games, food, a fun jump, face painting and a silent auction.

    Blood drive set for May 3

    POWAY ---- The San Diego Blood Bank bloodmobile will accept donations at a blood drive hosted by Sav-on Drugs from 2 to 7 p.m. May 3 at 1459 Main St. The bloodmobile will be in the parking lot.

    All donors at this drive will receive a limited-edition "Are You My Type" T-shirt; a voucher for a free 30-minute massage courtesy of Just For Your Health Therapeutic Massage in San Marcos; and a medical history review and mini physical, which includes blood pressure, pulse, temperature and iron-level checks. Donors also can enter a drawing to win one of several pairs of tickets to a Padres home game at Petco Park in June.

    Anyone age 17 or older in good health and weighing at least 110 pounds may be eligible to donate blood. Eating a good meal before donating is recommended.

    Palomar student receives award from honor society

    SAN MARCOS ---- Palomar College student and San Marcos resident Neill K. Kovrig received the Phi Theta Kappa Distinguished Chapter President Award at the Phi Theta Kappa International Convention in Minneapolis earlier this year.

    Kovrig was one of only 25 selected to receive the award from among 1,200 Phi Theta Kappa chapter presidents in the U.S., Canada, Germany, Guam and American Samoa. Kovrig also accepted the Pinnacle Scholarship Award on behalf of Palomar's Phi Theta Kappa chapter, Alpha Omega Rho, for raising chapter membership by 10 percent this year. Palomar College President Dr. Sherrill Amador honored Kovrig at the April 13 Board of Governors meeting.

    Kovrig has been a student at Palomar since August 2000. He also works as a counseling support specialist for the Palomar College Transfer Center, has been a Palomar College peer ambassador, is an appointed member of the San Marcos Traffic Safety Commission, is involved with Palomar theater and sings in his church choir. He is campaigning to become the Nevada-California regional president for Phi Theta Kappa and plans to pursue a bachelor's degree in history with an emphasis in religion at Cal State San Marcos, Louisiana's Tulane University or High Point University in North Carolina.

    Phi Theta Kappa is a prestigious honor society that serves two-year colleges around the world. Membership is by invitation only and is based primarily upon academic achievement.

    Richard Lederer to speak at college

    Julian Wildflower Show slated

    Project CARE helps take care of O'side seniors

    OCEANSIDE ---- Oceanside's Project CARE offers daily "are you OK?" phone calls to seniors age 55 and over. Follow-up steps are taken to ensure seniors' safety should phone calls go unanswered, culminating with a physical check by the police department. Also offered is the "Vial of Life" envelope listing emergency medical information and medications taken, which seniors should attach to their refrigerator door.

    In the event of an emergency, paramedics will have medical information on hand when needed. Other facets of the program are also offered through the Oceanside Senior Citizens' Association at the Oceanside Senior Center. Project CARE is free to Oceanside senior residents.     Faith Lutheran sending care packages to wounded military
