Angel Society plans annual luncheon
FALLBROOK ---- The Angel Society of Fallbrook will have its annual luncheon May 27 at The Grand Tradition, 1602 S. Mission Road. The group's treasure sale begins at 11 a.m. and lunch is served at noon.
Invitations have been sent to more the club's more than 600 members. The treasures have been collected throughout the year and include silver, crystal, linens, jewelry, boutique items and household items. Angel Society members will model fashions which will be available for sale.
Connie Loeschner is event chairwoman. Cost is $25, and the deadline for reservations is May 17.
The society, founded in 1978, is approaching the $2 million mark in donations to local charities. Philanthropic Chairwoman Ailsa Benjamin will announce the total at the luncheon.
Donations were made to these organizations in April: Fallbrook Head Start, the AVID program, Junior Wildlife Exhibit, Fallbrook Support League, Fallbrook High School Girls Tennis Team, Art Assist Committee and the Fallbrook Community Student of the Month program. Scholarships for Ivy and Oasis High School graduates will be awarded at their commencement ceremonies in June.
Surplus produce to be collected for military families

Gem and mineral society to meet
FALLBROOK ----- The Fallbrook Gem and Mineral Society will meet at 7:30 p.m. May 13 at the society museum at 123 W. Alvarado St. Speaker will be Edward Boehm who will talk on gemstone mining in Burma, Sri Lanka, Tanzania and Madagascar. Boehm is president of JOEB Enterprises, located in Solana Beach.
Speaker for the June 10 meeting will be Bob Jones, editor of Rock and Gem magazine. He will talk on gold as a collector's mineral. That gathering also will be pie night. For information, call (760) 728-1130.
DAR to meet May 20
FALLBROOK ---- The National Society Daughters of the American Revolution's Fallbrook chapter Monserate will meet at 11:30 a.m. May 20 at Vista Valley Country Club. This will be the final meeting until October.
A new slate of officers was elected during the April 15 meeting. Retiring officers who have served since 2002 are Regent Mary Harrington, first vice-regent Grayce Kelly, secretary Cecelia Njust, chaplain Gerri Metzger and registrar Laverne Boyd. Newly elected officers who will serve through April 2006 are Regent Laverne Boyd, first vice-regent Mary Ann LeMay, continuing second vice-regent Judy Ambrose, secretary Pat Hall, continuing treasurer Pat Hacker, chaplain Laura Todd, and registrar Beverlee Stuart-Borok.
Guests who are prospective members and who attended the recent meeting are Carol Anderson, Edie Blasier, Bonnie Brown, Sharon Dortch, Patricia Halbig, Eileen Heller, Martina Nelson, Jean Pettigrew, Barbara Taylor and Adele Walenciak.

Auditions slated for Temecula show
TEMECULA ---- The Fine Arts Network of Temecula will conduct auditions for its fourth annual summer musical production "How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying."
Auditions, open to teens and adults, will take place by appointment May 21 and 22. Show dates are Aug. 6 through 15 at the Stephen Price Theater in Lake Elsinore.
Those planning to audition should prepare a 60- to 90-second vocal selection from a traditional-style Broadway show. Auditions must be done with a sound track. No accompanist or a cappella auditions are allowed. Bring music on a CD or cassette.

Women offered free golf instruction
ESCONDIDO ---- The Vineyard at Escondido will host its ninth annual Women in Golf Day from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. May 15 at the golf course, 925 San Pasqual Road.
The day will include a free day of golf instruction for beginner women golfers, a continental breakfast, putting and chipping contests and raffles. In addition, Nike will be on location to hold a demo day and will display the latest trends in women's golf apparel and accessories. Pioneer Room Friends to host social
ESCONDIDO ---- The Pioneer Room Friends will host "Recipe for Fun," an old-fashioned social to honor its members, their guests and all who are interested, from 2 to 4 p.m. May 19 in the Turrentine Room at the Escondido Public Library, 239 S. Kalmia St.
The event will feature refreshments culled from sources in the Pioneer Room, some dating back to the early 1900s. A souvenir recipe leaflet will be offered to each guest.
The program will feature Petei McHenry, executive director of the Valley Center History Museum, who will give a presentation on the pioneer days of Valley Center. McHenry did much of her research for her book, "The History of Valley Center, California: The Homestead Years ---- 1850 to 1900," at the Pioneer Room.

Donations sought for Memorial Day ceremony
ESCONDIDO ---- The Escondido Allied Veterans Council is preparing for the May 31, Memorial Day, ceremony at Oak Hill Park. Organizations are invited to participate by presenting a wreath or making a donation to the Living Tree Memorial. The donations will be presented to the Oak Hill Park for the purchase of trees.

Chamber offers BMW as grand prize
ESCONDIDO ---- The Escondido Chamber of Commerce has extended the date of its "Beemer Bonanza 2004" drawing in cooperation with Brecht BMW. The chamber also has added a choice of grand prize ---- a BMW motorcycle or a Mini Cooper, each valued at more than $20,000.
The chamber is selling tickets at $125 each and will only sell 300 tickets. With the addition of the Mini Cooper option, the grand prize drawing has been extended to June 18 at the annual dinner to be held at Orfila Vineyards. The chamber reserves the right to extend the date of the drawing until 300 tickets have been sold.

Birding trip to Santee Lakes set
SAN DIEGO ---- The Palomar Audubon Society will host a bird-watching field trip to Santee Lakes from 8:30 a.m. to noon May 15. Many water birds, other local residents and spring migrants will be observed. Moderate hiking is required.

Norge Lodge to celebrate 17th of May
VISTA ---- The Norge Lodge No. 6-60 will host a traditional Norwegian brunch to honor the 17th of May at 10 a.m. May 15. The 17th of May celebration marks Norway's declaration of independence and the triumph of constitutional government.

AAUW to host mediation program
ESCONDIDO ---- The Escondido-San Marcos branch of the American Association of University Women will host a luncheon meeting at 10 a.m. May 15 at the Escondido Country Club. The program will feature Pearl Hartz, "A Women of Peace in an Aggression-Prone World."
Hartz, a retired school teacher and counselor, began the San Diego Restorative Justice Mediation Program 10 years ago and, with the help of dedicated volunteers, has been able to resolve as many as 145 juvenile crimes a year. Nationally, this kind of program has proven to be a cost-effective way to bring victims and offenders face to face to work out solutions, keeping juveniles from going through the overworked court system.

Help for families of mentally ill
ESCONDIDO ---- The North Inland chapter of the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill will offer a free, 12-week "Family to Family" education program from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursdays, June 10 through Aug. 26.
The course is designed for family members of the mentally ill, and provides practical information and educational tools to help deal with the major mental illnesses, such as schizophrenia, bipolar illness, obsessive-compulsive disorder, depression and anxiety disorders.
Family participation, along with medication and therapy, can be critical for stabilization and recovery. Family members can learn ways to help their loved ones who may be suffering with a mental illness, while also receiving emotional support themselves.

Veterans to hold Memorial Day ceremony
RANCHO BERNARDO ---- The RB Veterans Memorial Association invites all veterans and their families and guests to attend its annual Memorial Day ceremony at 10 a.m. May 31 at the lake in Webb Park, on Avena Place off Bernardo Center Drive. Attendees are encouraged to bring chairs to the ceremony.
The featured speaker will be Brig. Gen. John M. Paxton Jr., commanding general of Marine Corps Recruit Depot, San Diego. The master of ceremonies for the event will be retired Marine Corps Maj. Gen. James J. McMonagle. The invocation and moment of silence will be led by Navy Cmdr. Mark Logid. The USMC Color Guard of MCRD will present the colors, and members of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7766 and the General J.P. Holland Chapter of the Military Order of World Wars will post the Service, MIA, MOWW and VFW flags.
Following the ceremony, guests are invited to a buffet luncheon on the patio of the newly opened Pearl Restaurant (formerly Anthony's) in Webb Park. The buffet will begin at noon. Legoland plans trading card day

Peter Sprague to perform
FALLBROOK ---- Local jazz musician Peter Sprague and Pass the Drum will perform at 7:30 p.m. May 15 at Hilltop Center, 331 E. Elder St., as part of the Fallbrook Americana Music Series. Inspired by his father, a jazz musician, Sprague took up guitar at the age of 12. By 15, he was devoting all his time and energy to learning music. He has recorded 15 albums under his own name and lent his talent to 120 others.
Recently, he played an original 20-minute guitar solo with the San Diego Symphony sharing the stage with Mark O'Connor, violinist and composer. He also serves as producer, engineer, guitar player and arranger in his Del Mar studio, Sprague Land. His performing group Pass the Drum features him on guitar; Tripp Sprague on sax, flute and percussion; Ken Dow on bass; Duncan Moore on drums; Tom Aros on percussion; and Coral Mac Farland Thuet and Leonard Patton on vocals.

GIA scholarship established
CARLSBAD ---- Michael Beaudry, president of Michael Beaudry Inc., has contributed $164,450 to the Gemological Institute of America to establish a scholarship program for students wishing to pursue a Graduate Jeweler Gemologist diploma. The Michael Beaudry Scholarship is the largest of its kind to be established for GIA students. Consisting of a fully paid tuition to the On Campus G.J.G. program with Wax & Design, the first Beaudry scholarship will be awarded in 2006. A total of five annual scholarships will be awarded for the 18-month program. In recognition of his gift, Beaudry will be inducted into the GIA League of Honor in October, and a classroom at GIA's world headquarters in Carlsbad will be named after his company. Tri-City Hospital needs volunteers
OCEANSIDE ---- Tri-City Medical Center volunteers serve in many different areas of the hospital, including acute and direct patient care, emergency, laboratory, pharmacy, reception, imaging, gift shop and as escorts and shuttle drivers.
Bilingual volunteers are important in helping patients with language communication problems and are especially needed at this time, as are all others interested in serving. Volunteers agree to serve 100 hours a year, usually in two, four-hour shifts a month. Rewards are many, including making new friends, and creating a sense of purpose, social activities and community pride.

Blood drive set for May 10
POWAY ---- The San Diego Blood Bank bloodmobile will accept donations at a blood drive hosted by Midas from 2:30 to 6:30 p.m. May 10 at 12672 Poway Road. The bloodmobile will be in the parking lot.
All donors at this drive will receive a limited-edition "Are You My Type" T-shirt; a voucher for a free oil change courtesy of Midas; and a medical history review and mini physical, which includes blood pressure, pulse, temperature and iron-level checks. Donors also can enter a drawing to win one of several pairs of tickets to a Padres home game at Petco Park in June.
Anyone age 17 or older in good health and weighing at least 110 pounds may be eligible to donate blood. Eating a good meal before donating is recommended.

RANCHO BERNARDO ---- The Pomerado Hospital Auxiliary will hold its annual installation luncheon and general meeting May 11 at the Country Club of Rancho Bernardo, 12280 Greens East Road. The event will begin at 11:15 a.m. with a no-host bar, followed by the luncheon at 12:15 p.m.
In addition to the installation of officers for 2004-05, the program will include the presentation of seven scholarships to local graduating high school seniors who are planning to pursue careers in the medical field. Awards for hours served by hospital volunteers also will be presented.

Auditions for 'Maternal Spirits' slated

Super Saturday Sale set at Discovery Shop
RANCHO BERNARDO ---- The Rancho Bernardo Discovery Shop, a quality resale boutique owned by the American Cancer Society, will hold a Super Saturday Sale on May 15. Selected clothing, accessories and gift items will be offered at 50 percent off the marked price. Refreshments will be served.

Book drive under way at Palomar College
SAN MARCOS ---- The "Builders for Books" book drive runs through May 21 at Palomar College, at 1140 W. Mission Road.
The book drive is a joint effort between Community Builders, a volunteer group started by students in Palomar's TRIO/Student Support Services Program, and Palomar's Phi Theta Kappa chapter. Both new and used books will be accepted. Look for the bright red drop-off bins located throughout the campus.
The donated books will go to community-based agencies in North County that support children, women and men, including YMCA Project Oz, the Alpha Project and North County Solutions for Change.
'Yellowstone Ecosystem' field course offered
SAN MARCOS ---- Palomar College will offer a summer field course to the Grand Teton and Yellowstone National Parks from August 4 to 13. During the course, students will spend time traveling, hiking, canoeing and rafting to observe wildlife and learn about the ecosystem. The course, titled "The Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem," is open to 20 students, and no experience in canoeing or rafting is required.
In addition, students will research a topic of interest to them related to the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem and write a short paper on the subject, and give a 5- to- 10-minute, "campfire chat" on their topic to the rest of the class. Students also must keep a "Naturalist's Journal" of their observations, activities, presentations and wildlife observed during the course.
To participate in the field course, individuals must register for one of the following Palomar College summer classes: Biology 195 or Zoology 195 (3 units); Biology 114L (2 units); Biology 295 (2 units); and Biology 45 (3 units), which is designed for children younger than 15 who are accompanied by a parent enrolled in one of the other biology classes.
Cost is $18 per unit, plus $720 to cover accommodations, rafting, and canoeing. Students are responsible for their own transportation to and from Wyoming and for their own food.

RSF Republican Women to salute America
RANCHO SANTA FE ---- Rancho Santa Fe Republican Women Federated will host a salute to America at 5:30 p.m. May 18 featuring guest speaker John "Mac" McLaughlin, United States Army, (Ret.) and currently director of the USS Midway Museum, at its sixth annual Salute to America at the Inn at Rancho Santa Fe. The dinner event honors American patriots for their service and dedication to a grateful nation.
A color guard will be provided by the Army and Navy Academy of Carlsbad. A no-host cocktail bar begins at 6 p.m. with dinner and speaker to follow. Master of ceremonies for the dinner will be former judge Larry Sterling, candidate for the 39th State Senate District. Keynote McLaughlin is a graduate of the US Naval Academy.
Some of the young active duty servicemen who may have just returned from or are on their way soon to Iraq will be present at the dinner. There will be an opportunity to thank the United States active military and their families by making a cash or check contribution to the USO for their vital support of the armed forces.

Palomar board candidate forum slated
SAN MARCOS ---- The Palomar Community College District will present a governing board candidates' forum from 5 to 7 p.m. May 12 at Palomar College, 1140 W. Mission Road, San Marcos. The forum is sponsored by the Palomar Faculty Federation Committee on Political Education and the Political Action Committee of the Council of Classified Employees. The event will be held in room LS-24 on the San Marcos campus.
The candidates running for the three seats open in the November election will be asked to present their qualifications and reasons for pursing a seat on the Palomar College Governing Board. The public will then be invited to participate in a question-and-answer period following the candidates' presentations.
The Palomar Community College District is governed by a five-member governing board elected to four-year terms by voters in the district which serves 2,500 square miles of North County. Palomar College is one of 108 colleges in the California Community College system and one of eight in San Diego County. It serves more than 30,000 full-time and part-time students each fall and spring semester with about 18,000 students attending during the summer semester.

The catalog also contains professional development courses and information about more than 30 professional certificate programs, which are designed to improve professional skills or prepare participants for a new career. Also offered are courses in management, business writing, leadership and other areas of business.

Coastal Communities Band to perform

'A Taste of Old England' concert scheduled

Auditions for "Seussical the Musical" scheduled

Surfrider fund-raiser set
DEL MAR ---- The Surfrider Foundation, San Diego chapter, will hold its fourth annual Art Gala from 6 to 10 p.m. May 14 at the Powerhouse, 1658 Coast Highway. The event will feature about 50 pieces of art from renowned artists, gourmet food from several local restaurants and entertainment. Proceeds will go directly to programs including beach clean ups, water quality testing, pollution monitoring and education outreach.
