Sydnee Michaels trounced the field at a U.S. Junior Girls Open qualifier at Merced Golf and Country Club on Friday. Michaels carded a 1-over-par 73 in tough, windy, conditions on the 6,250-yard, par-72 layout. The runner-up in the field of 57 shot 77.

The Linfield Christian junior needed just 24 putts in her round.

"My iron shots were pretty good, but my putter was on fire," Michaels said.

Michaels, who earlier this week earned first-alternate status for the U.S. Women's Open, was one of 11 golfers to qualify for the U.S. Junior Girls Open, a national tournament for girls under 18 which will be played July 19-24 in Fort Worth, Texas.

Eastlack ties for fourth

Menifee resident Tom Eastlack shot a 1-under-par 71 on the 6,833-yard, par-72 Poppy Hills Golf Course in Pebble Beach to finish the 13th California Golf Association Senior Amareur Championship in a fourth-place tie with a three-day total of 223.
