SAN FRANCISCO -- The son of the late Herb Caen, the San Francisco Chronicle's Pulitzer Prize winning columnist, is following in his father's footsteps with his own newspaper column.

Christopher Caen, 39, will be chronicling the city in two weekly columns for the SF Newspaper Co. that will appear in The Examiner on Thursdays and in The Independent on Saturdays, said publisher Scott McKibben.

Caen's new column debuted in Thursday's Examiner, with Caen introducing himself to readers and differentiating himself from his father, who wrote with wit and wisdom about all things San Francisco for six decades until he died of lung cancer at age 80 in 1997.

"My father and I are cut from different literary cloth," said Christopher Caen, Herb's only son. "For me the end of a sentence is something to be feared. ... My father could not wait to get to the point."

Christopher Caen said he's always enjoyed writing, but hasn't done much professionally. The San Francisco native majored in creative writing as a college student at Stanford University, and he's working on his second novel. His first novel, set in Silicon Valley, hasn't been published.

Caen, who runs a software startup in San Francisco, said The Independent column will focus on the city's diverse neighborhoods while The Examiner column will tackle bigger topics such as same-sex marriage, the economy and City Hall.

"Both the Examiner and myself have no expectation that this will be my father's column," Caen said in an interview. "I still don't know what this column will be about. Every column has to find its voice."

McKibben said he hopes Caen's column will help the two newspapers, which were purchased by Denver billionaire Phil Anschutz in February, attract younger readers.

"We think it adds more interest, more variety and more relevance," McKibben said. "We want to give people news that they are really interested in reading."
