Court documents released Monday revealed that 17-year-old Ben Fogelstrom gave conflicting information to authorities about the disappearance of his friend, Eric Sears of Carlsbad.
Ben first said his 17-year-old camp mate disappeared in Joshua Tree National Park after they drank tea made of Jimson weed , an hallucinogenic drug, according to the affidavit in support of a search warrant for the Fogelstroms' Carlsbad home.
The affidavit said Ben later broke down crying during a polygraph test and said he and Eric argued because the keys to Eric's truck were lost.
Eric's body was found July 23 by a volunteer search party about 1.5 miles from the Jumbo Rocks Campground where he was last seen.
The Sears family Monday declined to comment on the search warrant.
"We're not commenting on the investigation," said Sears' father Tom at the front door of the family's Carlsbad home amidst colorful floral bouqets and poetic and photographic tributes to his deceased son.
A memorial service Saturday for Eric drew about 600 friends and supporters.
