SAN DIEGO - The U.S. Coast Guard will commission a quick-response homeland security unit Tuesday, the sixth such squad to be deployed in the Pacific region since the 9/11 terror strikes, the agency announced today.
San Diego-based Maritime Safety and Security Team 91109 will be part of a "layered strategy" of protecting the nation's seaports and waterways, according to USCG public affairs.
It will be the 11th entity of its type to go into operation in the United States in a program created in response to the attacks on the East Coast 39 months ago.
The teams, modeled after the Coast Guard's port-security units and law enforcement detachments, are capable of prompt deployment by sea, air or ground, officials said. CNS-12-13-2004 14:30
