County watching for sudden oak death

With the recent issuance of uniform standards regarding the shipment of nursery stock from California under a quarantine and inspection program for sudden oak death, county agriculture officials want to make sure local nurseries are free of the disease.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture's Dec. 21 ruling goes into effect Jan. 10. The San Diego County Department of Agriculture, Weights & Measures is working to make sure all area nurseries are in compliance with the federal standards.

Nursery owners who ship stock out of state and want county officials to survey their properties and certify they are free of the disease can call (760) 752-4700. There is no charge.

Information about sudden oak death and the surveys is available on the state Department of Food & Agriculture's Web Site: www.cdfa.ca.gov/phpps/pe/sod_survey.
