Bettie June Reed saw North County grow
By: BEN FRUMIN -- Staff Writer
ENCINITAS ---- Encinitas was a tiny town with dirt roads when Bettie June Reed was an elementary school student in Leucadia, and Escondido was a 10,000-person community populated by cowboys and farmers when Reed was raising a family of her own there.
"It was a small community, so each (person) was so important" said Susan Smith, Reed's daughter, in a phone interview Wednesday.
Reed died Jan. 12. She was 79.
Reed saw dairy mills become strip malls, downtowns grow at exponential rates and stoplights erected at intersections where automobile traffic had once been a rarity, family members said.
The fifth of 11 children, Reed was born in 1925 in Glendale. She moved to Leucadia when she was about 2, and lived in North County until she retired in Oregon in 1990.
A mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, Reed was caring, giving and deeply devoted to her family, friends and neighbors, said Grace Wooden, Reed's youngest sister.
"(She was) always there to lend a helping hand," Wooden said, adding that Reed often welcomed with open arms family members in need of nurturing, emotional support or medical care.
Raised in a Tudor home her father built in Leucadia in 1926, Reed attended Central School, where one of her classmates was Paul Ecke Jr., the deceased poinsettia magnate who perfected mass production of the holiday flower and left a legacy of philanthropy in Encinitas.
Reed graduated from San Dieguito High School, and remained involved in organizing Mustang reunions throughout her life.
During World War II, Reed helped man lookout stations set up along the California coast to keep a watch for enemy planes.
She married Vernon Reed in 1945, and the couple moved to Escondido, where they raised two children and owned and operated the Diamond Horseshoe Milling Co. and a plastering business.
The Reeds enjoyed raising and riding quarter horses, and would often go on horse-riding trips throughout rural North County, Smith said.
Reed was also an avid trap shooter, and was an ace at hitting the moving clay targets in competitions, Smith said, adding that once her mother hit about 100 in a row.
Wooden said her sister developed in later life a passion for teddy bears, and would design and craft handmade bears on a regular basis.
Through the San Diego Teddy Bear Artists Club, Reed helped raise money to buy teddy bears for "different groups that needed teddy bears (and) anyone who needed a hug," Wooden said.
