Connerly leaves with parting warning: Don't consider race

SAN FRANCISCO -- University of California Regent Ward Connerly completed his term with a final plea to fellow board members: Don't bring back affirmative action admissions. "There will be a great temptation ... for you to relax your attitude about the use of race," Connerly said in his parting remarks Thursday. "For God's sake, don't do it."

Golf on Lehman's terms

Thumbnail
LA JOLLA ---- In layman's terms, Lehman is hot. Del Mar's Tom Lehman, whose game has clicked since September, grabbed the Buick Invitational's first-round lead with a 10-under par 62 on Thursday. "I'm very pleased with the way I'm playing," said Lehman, after matching his career-low round. "I'm driving it long, and I'm driving it in the fairway quite a bit and rolling the ball fairly well and making some putts."

Bush properly links security to democracy

Our View: The long arc of human history is dominated by misery, oppression and tragedy, with the notable exception of the last 60 years, which witnessed an astonishing explosion of liberty, rising living standards and respect for civil rights in Europe, North America, Asia and South Africa, or roughly half of the populated world. Reno man castrates self; learned procedure on Internet

RENO, Nev. -- A 50-year-old Reno man who was hospitalized after he castrated himself told police he learned of the procedure on the Internet and did so to lower his libido. The man, whose name was not released, called 911 at about 1:30 a.m. Monday and asked for help because he could not stop the bleeding from a self-castration operation, police said.
