Chargers ready to put franchise tag on Brees

SAN DIEGO ---- The speculation swirling around Pro Bowl quarterback Drew Brees could cease Wednesday. General manager A. J. Smith confirmed Tuesday the Chargers are close to announcing their decision on Brees, a soon-to-be-unrestricted free agent. It's believed Smith will designate Brees with the franchise tag ---- possibly this afternoon ---- and hold a press conference Thursday to expand on the team's offseason moves.

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan urged Congress on Wednesday to take a go-slow approach in setting up the private Social Security accounts favored by President Bush. The president said he wasn't ruling out taxing high-income workers more to help the retirement program.

Pair of paintings of dogs playing poker fetches $590,000 in auction

NEW YORK -- A pair of paintings from the famed series depicting dogs playing poker fetched nearly $600,000 at auction Tuesday. The two works -- "A Bold Bluff" and "Waterloo" -- were among 16 paintings that artist Cassius Marcellus Coolidge was commissioned to create for a Minnesota-based advertising company in 1903. Of the 16, nine are of dogs playing poker.

    Wildomar annexation may be dropped

    MURRIETA ---- Murrieta may withdraw its application to annex Wildomar, Mayor Jack van Haaster said in an unexpected announcement Tuesday night. Van Haaster said that, given the political climate in the city, he is withdrawing his support of the plan to annex part of the community to the north. He also said he would not support Murrieta taking over all of Wildomar, a proposal that is also under consideration by the county Local Agency Formation Commission at the request of county Supervisor and Commissioner Bob Buster.
