UCSD union workers plan job action

SAN DIEGO - About 500 union workers plan to stay away from their jobs at UC San Diego on Thursday as part of a statewide job action, it was reported Sunday.
Officials with the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees expect most of the 7,300 UC workers they represent to miss work at UC's nine campuses and five medical centers, The San Diego Union-Tribune reported.
UC service workers, who have not had a raise in two years, have accused the university of dragging its feet in contract negotiations, while UC administrators counters that union demands for raises of more than 20 percent over three years are unrealistic.
"I don't want to hurt the patients," said Angie Mendoza, 44, a janitor at UCSD Medical Center in Hillcrest for 16 years who makes $12.42 per hour. "I want them to have a clean bathroom, but I know they will understand. Sometimes you just have to do what you got to do."
The strike has been sanctioned by the San Diego-Imperial Counties Labor Council, a coalition of 110 labor groups in the region. That means members of other unions will try to honor the picket line, said Labor Council CEO Jerry Butkiewicz. Members of other unions at UC, including the clerical workers union, have given notice to the administration that they will join the strike.
