BRAC announcement will throw kink into search for new airport site

Friday's announcement that the Pentagon has no major changes planned for Camp Pendleton, North Island Naval Air Station and Marine Corps Air Station Miramar or March Air Reserve Base in Riverside County will affect on ongoing search for a new regional airport.

The San Diego County Regional Airport Authority has each of those bases on its list of prospective new airfield sites. But those could well be taken off the list now that none is recommended for closure.

Airport authority officials declined to comment on the Pentagon recommendations Friday, in keeping with a promise they made to state and local elected officials last month. The authority was chastised by politicians for considering the military sites and agreed not to discuss publicly any of the bases until the Base Realignment and Closure Commission completes its work at year's end.

Authority board member Robert Maxwell said Friday that he and other officials were counseled by the authority's executive director this week to continue to make "no comment" their standard answer when asked about the military bases.

San Diego Mayor Dick Murphy said during a news conference at City Hall Friday that he was "absolutely pleased" that Miramar will remain an active military air base and not become a prime candidate for a new airport.

"It is unlikely that there would be any kind of civilian airport operations there," Murphy said.
