County OKs $200,000 grant for new library in Fallbrook

FALLBROOK ---- A determined group of citizens seeking to build a new library in Fallbrook came $200,000 closer to that goal Tuesday in the form of a grant from the San Diego County Board of Supervisors.
The grant was approved by the board at the request of Supervisor Bill Horn, a consistent supporter of the effort to build a new $6 million library just north of the current facility at 124 S. Mission Road.
In a statement issued by his office, Horn praised the Friends of the Library for their work in raising nearly $1.5 million to date for the library project, and said the county grant "further encourages their efforts to replace a facility that is old, cramped and has long since outlived its usefulness."
The money collected so far by the Fallbrook group has come from private donations, an earlier county grant and book sales at the Friends of the Fallbrook Library's Bottom Shelf bookstore.
Bob Jacobson, a supporter of the new library effort since it began several years ago, said the county grant was wonderful, but state assistance will likely be needed to finally build it.
"It's terrific," Jacobson said of the $200,000 contribution. "We've known that Supervisor Horn is supportive of libraries and everything, but getting that amount of money right now is really good for us ---- it's a real enthusiasm-builder."
"The big thing that we still need is to get money from the state," he added.
The Friends of the Fallbrook Library committee has already purchased the land where the new, 16,000-square-foot library will be built, and has drafted plans that include more shelf space, a community room, a children's reading area and a mezzanine.
In March 2006, a state ballot initiative to establish $600 million in funding for community libraries will be decided by California voters. If passed, proponents of the new Fallbrook library said they will apply for a state grant again, after having failed last year to secure a portion of the money that was left over from a previous $350 million state library fund.
