UC San Diego women's track and field coach Tony Salerno was named the NCAA Division II Coach of the Year by the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches' Association at the NCAA Division II Track and Field Championships in Abilene, Texas, last week.

Salerno guided the Tritons to their best showing at the Division II level, finishing 14th out of the 55 teams at the nationals.

The team won its first-ever California Collegiate Athletic Association Championship just three weeks prior to the NCAAs.

Triton an All-American

UC San Diego women's crew varsity eight member Sarah Smolley was named to the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association NCAA Division II All-America first team. The senior was a key member of the Tritons team that made its first-ever NCAA Championships appearance. The varsity eight captured the Petite Final on Sunday by defeating Florida Institute of Technology.

Skovron wins

Murrieta's Joe Skovron fired a 5-under-par 67 to take first place in the professional division at a Golden State Golf Tour event on Tuesday. The one-day tournament was held at the par-72, 7,036-yard SCGA Golf Course in Murrieta. Shovron collected $700 for the victory.
