Adult literacy programs resume
SAN DIEGO ---- Starting July 1, the county library system will resume its adult literacy program, providing free volunteer training and a tutoring network at all of its branch libraries.
Five years ago, budget challenges led the library to close its own program and contract for the service through READ San Diego, which is the adult literacy program of the San Diego Public Library.
"By rebuilding this program, we intend to offer an additional portal to the resources of our global community for all of our residents, in a safe learning environment for all learners and tutors willing to commit time, resources and patience," County Library Director Jose ApontÈ said. "The literacy program provides another piece to our community's dynamic educational landscape, helping build a more competitive workforce and success in the global marketplace."
Working one-on-one with people to develop their basic reading and writing skills benefits not only the student, but the volunteer tutor as well. Few contributions to one's community are as gratifying as helping someone become competent and confident enough to help themselves and their families function fully at work, schoo, and at play, said ApontÈ.
The San Diego County Library serves 11 of the county's incorporated cities and 21 unincorporated communities, as well as small communities located on two mobile library routes. For information about becoming a volunteer adult literacy tutor or student within the County Library's area of service, call Outreach Librarian Amanda Schukle at (858) 694-2108.
