VISTA ---- A man died Thursday night when he was fatally shot as he allegedly used weights to attack sheriff's deputies at a Vista home, authorities said Friday.

The name of the 25-year-old man wasn't being released yet.

Sheriff's homicide Lt. Tom Bennett said deputies had been called twice to the duplex in the 800 block of North Citrus Avenue before the fatal confrontation just after 8 p.m. Thursday.

Both of those times Wednesday and Thursday the man talked about his wife, who appeared to have left, Bennett said.

Deputies made another trip to the home Thursday night because a woman had called to report that her roommate was acting bizarre and making irrational statements, Bennett said.

"He was telling her that she (and her husband) had locked up his wife in a closet," the lieutenant said. "She couldn't convince him that they had not."

Three deputies responded to the home. Two of them tried to talk to the man, who was in a bedroom, Bennett said. He said the man grabbed two 10-pound dumbbells.

The deputies tried to use pepper spray to subdue the man, but he charged the deputies and threw one of the weights, Bennett said. He said the weight hit one deputy's left arm, causing a red mark and contusion.

"It was a very aggressive attack by the suspect," said the lieutenant.

Backed into the living room, Bennett said, both deputies fired on the man. Shot at least once in his upper body, the man fell to the floor, said Bennett.

He said deputies began cardio pulmonary resuscitation, but the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

The investigation was continuing Friday.
