More than 1,300 Marines, sailors and their families were treated to a picnic and entertainment today at Camp Pendleton, courtesy of the city of Newport Beach.
The Orange County city "adopted" the 1st Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force, which helped with tsunami relief in Indonesia and Sri Lanka, and spent a month near Baghdad, Marine Staff Sgt. Nathaniel T. Garcia said.
The entertainment included face painting for the children, mini-train rides, a magic show, a dunking booth and clowns, Garcia said.
"The San Diego Chargers Cheerleaders came and signed autographs and boosted morale," Garcia said.
Items raffled off -- all of them donated by Newport Beach residents and businesses -- included a motorcycle, iPods, bicycles and tickets to Padres baseball games, Garcia said.
The unit returned from a six-month deployment June 5.
