DEL MAR ---- To raise money to walk in the upcoming Avon Breast Cancer Crusade in Los Angeles, four employees from two local SmithBarney offices will hold a fund-raiser today at Chevy's Fresh Mex restaurant, 2730 Via de la Valle. From 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., Chevy's will donate 15 percent of its profits to the cause from customers who present a flier, which will distributed by the four employees in front of the restaurant. Dixieland jazz concert today in SM
SAN MARCOS ---- Brookdale Place of San Marcos will host its annual Garden Party, which will feature the High Society Dixieland Jazz Band, from 2 to 4 p.m. today at 1590 W. San Marcos Blvd. Admission is free and refreshments will be provided.

Modular train show, exhibit on tap
SAN DIEGO ---- The N Scale Collector will present its annual train show and exhibit from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Aug. 20 and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Aug. 21 at the Town & Country Hotel.
The show will include the largest N-scale modular layout ever assembled on the West Coast. The operating display will cover more than 20,000 square feet and feature multiple running trains. The festivities also will include smaller operating layouts, manufacturer booths and displays, how-to clinics and vendors from around the country. The first 750 kids through the door each day will be given a free model railroad kit, and a few children will be chosen at random to run a train on the layout.
The N Scale Collector will donate $1 from every paid admission to Children's Hospital and Health Center in San Diego, as well as provide a number of free tickets to the patients and hospital staff. Admission prices are $7 for adults and $3 for children, seniors and active military. Family tickets will be offered at $10, which includes two adult tickets and up to four kids tickets.

India Night at Petco Park on tap
SAN DIEGO ---- The Federation of India Associations, San Diego, and the San Diego Padres will present India Night at Petco Park during the Padres/Astros game Aug. 22.

Padres blood drive planned
SAN DIEGO ---- The ninth annual Padres Blood Drive will be held from 12:30 to 6:30 p.m. Aug. 22 on the fourth floor of the Omni San Diego Hotel at Petco Park, 675 L St. More than 500 donors are expected to attend the drive, along with Padres players. The drive precedes the Padres vs. Houston Astros game, which will begin at 7:05 p.m.
All donors at this drive will receive Padres memorabilia; an opportunity to enter drawings for free tickets to the Padres game that evening; free coffee, pizza, hot dogs and soft drinks; taco cards from Rubio's, and Penta Water.

Women's Equality Day event set
SAN DIEGO ---- A coalition of San Diego County women's organizations will present Women's Equality Day, a celebration of the 85th anniversary of women's suffrage, Aug. 26 at the Joan Kroc Institute for Peace and Justice at the University of San Diego. The event will begin at 11:45 a.m. with a luncheon, followed by the program at 12:30 p.m.
The keynote address will be given by U.S. Rep. Maxine Waters, who will discuss the current status of women in the United States, Afghanistan, Iraq and elsewhere in the world. Mistress of ceremonies for the event will be Margaret Radford of NBC Channel 7/39.

NAACP to host Back to School rally
OCEANSIDE ---- The North San Diego County NAACP Adult and Youth Council will host its 2005-06 Back to School/Stay in School rally from noon to 3 p.m. Aug. 27 at the bell tower at MiraCosta College, 1 Barnard Drive. Registration and food will be available from 11:30 a.m. to noon.
The event will feature various learning activities, including educational games and fun prizes. In addition, scholarship and career counseling information will be available, and education professionals will be on hand to answer questions. Entertainment will be provided, and students will have a chance to showcase their academic skills through various media, including a poetry jam, reading of short stories and presentations of academic success. Those in attendance will receive free gifts for school, informative handouts, lots of advice and a free lunch.
The primary purpose of the Back to School/Stay in School program is to aid students through a conglomeration of tutoring sessions, parent/family workshops and academic enrichment. The ultimate goal is to reduce absenteeism and truancy among students of all ages and to provide students with extra academic support.

Camp Mountain Chai dedication slated
The San Diego Jewish Community Camp and Retreat Center announces the dedication of Camp Mountain Chai, a residential summer camp and retreat center located in Angelus Oaks in the San Bernardino Mountains. A dedication celebration will take place from noon to 6 p.m. Aug. 28. Festivities will include a kosher barbecue lunch and activities for all ages throughout the day.

Head Start enrollment under way
SAN DIEGO ---- The Neighborhood House Association ---- Head Start and Early Head Start ---- is enrolling children from low-income families, foster children and children with disabilities, ages 6 weeks to 5 years, in a free early child development program. Golf tourney to benefit pediatric programs
LAKE SAN MARCOS ---- North County Health Services will host its first golf tournament, "Fore for Kids," on Sept. 9 at the Lake San Marcos Country Club, 1025 La Bonita Drive. Registration will begin at 11 a.m., with a shot-gun start scheduled for 1 p.m.
The tournament will be conducted in a four-man scramble format. Cost is $150 per player or $600 per foursome. A variety of sponsorship packages also are available.
All proceeds from the tournament will help pay for comprehensive pediatric care services for the 28,000 children that NCHS serves annually.
North County Health Services is a private, nonprofit organization that operates nine health centers in Carlsbad, Encinitas, Oceanside, Ramona and San Marcos, as well as two mobile clinics.

Club offers events for single seniors
NORTH COUNTY ---- The North County Singles Club is a friendship organization dedicated to providing activities for single seniors ages 55 and older.
The group's principal activity is dancing, most frequently on Friday evenings at the Vista Elks Lodge, 1947 E. Vista Way, Vista. Dinner is served at 5:30 p.m. and dancing to live music begins at 6:30. The cost is $10 and is applied toward the dinner, either menu or buffet.
Other fun activities that offer opportunities for socializing also are planned. Reservations are required for all events.
