PICKS OF THE WEEK
1. Diamond Valley Reservoir has been one of the top picks of the week for months because of its consistently good trout, bass, and bluegill fishing. Those bites are all still very good, but catfish and -- for the first time -- crappie decided to join the hot bite buffet. Lots of crappie from a half-pound to 1-0 have been landed over rocky structure or near the east dam, and the catfish have gone on a tear in the marina area. Most crappie are holding in mixed schools that include bluegill to 2-0. Many anglers are landing nice stringers of crappie and bluegill on mini-jigs tipped with a mealworm or night crawler tail. Catfish action has been good for shore anglers fishing near the marina and boat anglers fishing in most of the coves in 20 to 30 feet of water. Most of the cats are from 1-0 to 2-0 but fish to 12-0 have been landed on cut mackerel, shrimp, or night crawlers. Of course, the bass fishing is still hot with the fish gorging themselves full of shad on or near the surface. Anglers fishing topwater have been seeing surface action all day long on good quality fish averaging 2-8 to 5-0 with some to nearly 10-0 landed in the past week. Top baits have been topwater plugs, crankbaits, jerkbaits, spinnerbaits, and shad swimbaits. Trout action also remains hot for anglers using leadcore line or downriggers to get their small lures from 35 to 85 feet deep. There continues to be good action for anglers drifting night crawlers, trout worms, or mini-jigs at the same depths. Many trout are averaging 3-0, but fish to 8-0 have been landed daily. Trout are feeding on schools of shad when they move off the surface. Find the shad and you've found trout. For more information, contact the marina at (909) 926-7201.
2. At Lake Castaic, largemouth bass action has caught fire, and there is good action on fish averaging 1-8 to 5-0. Schools of largemouth have been attacking big schools of shad on the surface for the first three hours of the day. Top baits to fish on the boils are topwater plugs, shad swimbaits, crankbaits, or big Bomber jerkbaits. Many anglers are averaging from three to 25 fish a day depending on boat traffic and angler experience. Striped bass fishing has slowed down from the hot bite two months ago, but fair to good action has been reported by anglers either drifting cut anchovies or for anglers trolling white bucktails, jerkbaits, or big Kastmasters. Most fish landed on anchovies have averaged 2-0, but fish hitting trolled lures have been averaging 4-0 to 12-0. There is fair action on catfish with fish averaging 3-0 to 7-0. For more information, contact the marina at (661) 775-6232.
3. Trout fishing continues to be good at Green Valley Lake where lots of trout from 1-0 to 3-0 have been landed. The lake will receive a 2,000-pound plant of Mt. Lassen rainbows this week, with a few bigger fish to 8-0 scheduled to be planted. Fishing should be hot through the weekend and into next week. Best action has been for boat anglers fishing the dam or any of the lakes aerators with Power Bait, inflated night crawlers, mini-jigs, or trout worms. Shore fishing has been good early, and then a water bubble fished on a long cast is necessary to reach fish once they go deep. You can get more information and directions from the lake recording at (909) 867-2009.
FRESHWATER HOT SPOTS
TROUT: Trout fishing continues to be good at Green Valley Lake and 2,000 pounds Mt. Lassen rainbows to 8-0 are scheduled to be planted this week. Best action has been for boat anglers fishing the dam or any of the lakes aerators. Most fish are averaging 1-8 to 4-0, but fish to 10-0 have been landed. At Diamond Valley Reservoir trout fishing has been good for boat anglers fishing 35 to 85 feet deep with fish from 1-0 to 6-0 being landed over deep water near schools of shad. Trolling with downriggers or leadcore line is a must since the best action has been on Needlefish. There has also been good action on drifted night crawlers, mini-jigs, or slow-trolled trout worms at the same depths along the west dam. Big Bear Lake is good for anglers trolling or drifting their baits near the oxycline which is 23 feet deep from the dam to Papoose Bay, and 20 feet deep at the West Ramp. The best shore bite has been for anglers fishing slip-bobbers and Power Bait on a 20- to 25-foot leader near the dam. In the Eastern Sierra, North Lake and South Lake kicked out plenty of fish from 1-0 to 5-0 after receiving a plant from Tim Alpers on Friday. Best action at North Lake was on split-shotted trout worms, while at South Lake Power Bait, inflated night crawlers, or trolled Rapalas have been best. There were also quality fish taken from Bishop Creek and Lake Sabrina, both of which have been planted pretty heavily over the last month.
LARGEMOUTH BASS: Overall, bass fishing continues to be just fair at most lakes and reservoirs throughout Southern California, however most have a good topwater bite early in the morning and a decent plastic worm bite the rest of the day. At Diamond Valley Reservoir, the bite has been very good with 3-0 to 8-0 class bass the norm, the best size-average in the state. Bass continue to hold in shallow water early in the morning while chasing shad, and then the best fishing has been 25 to 40 feet deep once the fish leave the surface. Best baits early in the morning are jerkbaits, Pop-R's, Zara Spooks, or shad swimbaits. Later in morning slow rolling spinnerbaits in deep water has been the best option, while drop-shotted plastics, Carolina-rigged plastics, or big crankbaits have also been taking fish. Pyramid Lake has a hot topwater bite the first couple hours of the morning. Most largemouth have been averaging 1-0 to 4-8, but fish to 7-2 have been landed. Best action once fish leave the surface has been along any steep rocky shorelines or main lake points. Castaic Lake has been on an upswing for bass averaging 1-8 to 4-0 in a good bite on jerkbaits or crankbaits early in the day, and then fair action on drop-shotted or Texas-rigged plastic worms once the sun is up. Thomas Castillo, Valencia, caught and released seven bass to 4-12 on a drop-shotted plastic fished 35 feet deep. Silverwood, Perris, Isabella, San Vicente, Wohlford, Piru, Casitas, and Cachuma are all fair to good on fish averaging 1-0 to 5-0.
STRIPED BASS: Striper fishing continues to be fair to good at Lake Pyramid with some good scattered surface activity early in the morning. Surface action is directly dependent on boat traffic, with more boats equaling less action. Fish to 6-0 have been landed on the surface by anglers using Pop-R's, Zara Spooks, or jerkbaits. Once the sun is up fish move into deeper water and cut anchovies drifted 20 to 50 feet deep have been best. Fish are averaging1-0 to 3-0 with some bigger fish from 4-0 to 8-0. Lake Castaic striper fishing has been has been fair for boat anglers trolling Bomber jerkbaits, white bucktails, or big silver Kastmasters from 15 to 35 feet deep for fish to 12-0. Smaller fish from 1-8 to 3-0 have been landed on drifted anchovies. The California Aqueduct near Taft continues to be good. When flows are low to moderate the bite is good on Lug Worm and night crawler combos, cut anchovies, frozen shad, or Rat-L-Traps. Most fish have been averaging 1-0 to 3-0, but fish to 5-0 have been landed. High flows mean tougher action.
PANFISH: There continues to be very good bluegill action at Diamond Valley Lake, where anglers targeting the dams, shallow rock piles, weed beds, or reed-choked shorelines have been landing fish to 2-0. This week, crappie have added to that already hot bite by joing the bluegill and big mixed schools of fish are showing over any rocky structure or near the east dam. Best baits have been crickets, red worms, or mini-jigs tipped with mealworms or night crawler tails. Most fish are under 1-0, but fish to 2-2 have been landed. Lower Otay continues to produce solid action on bluegill and crappie to 1-8. Best fishing has been along the reeds for boat anglers fishing mealworms, crickets, or small mini-jigs. There have also been scattered catches of crappie for anglers fishing mini-jigs. Most fish are averaging 1-0, but fish to 2-0 have been landed. Lake Lopez on the Central Coast has also been very good for bluegill and redear, with some fish topping a pound landed on mealworms, night crawlers, or crickets. Just about all lakes in the region are producing fair action on small panfish with a small piece of worm fished on a small hook under a small bobber.
CATFISH: Hesperia Lake continues to pump out plenty of big blue catfish over 20-0 for anglers fishing mealworm and marshmallow combos, a night crawler and marshmallow combo, shrimp, or mackerel. Most big fish have been landed by anglers fishing long rods and heavy weights to get baits in the deep water just off the island in the middle of the six-acre lake. Many limits of smaller fish from 1-0 to 5-0 have also been landed on the same baits. Irvine Lake, Santa Ana River Lakes, and Corona Lake continue to produce good action on catfish averaging 1-0 to 3-0 with fish to 10-0 or better landed at each lake. Best action has been on mackerel, but mealworm and marshmallow combos and shrimp have also been good. Diamond Valley Lake continues to have good action for daytime anglers using cut baits on fish to 10-0. Pyramid and Silverwood both continueto be fair to good on catfish to 12-0. Most fish have been landed on cut anchovies, mackerel, or night crawlers fished 20 to 70 feet deep. Most anglers have been landing from three to five fish each. On the lower Colorado River, there continues to be fair to good action on flathead catfish to 20-0 at night. In addition, many anglers are landing limits of channel catfish to 4-0 once the sun goes down. Top bait for flatheads have been live goldfish or bluegill, while the channel cats have been taken on hot dogs, mackerel, chicken livers, shrimp, or night crawlers.

GRUNION RUNS
Grunion spawn on all of Southern California's long, sandy beaches from early March through mid-August each year. Anglers may only use their hands to catch grunion.
The times refer to the grunion runs at Cabrillo Beach near the Los Angeles Harbor entrance. The times of the runs vary along the coast. San Diego runs are about five minutes earlier and Santa Barbara area runs are about 25 minutes later. The best activity is usually in the second hour of the run and on the second and third nights of the four-night spawning period. There is one run left this season.
The next run is Aug. 21-24. Run times are as follows: 11:15 p.m. to 1:15 a.m., Sunday, Aug. 21; 12:05 a.m. to 2:05 a.m. Monday, Aug. 22 (actually Tuesday, Aug. 23); 1:05 a.m. to 3:05 a.m., Tuesday, Aug. 23 (actually Wednesday, Aug. 24); and 2:25 a.m. to 4:25 a.m., Wednesday, Aug. 24 (actually Thursday, Aug. 25).
The Department of Fish and Game publishes an annual brochure called "California Grunion Facts and Expected Runs." It is available free if you mail a self-addressed stamped business-size envelope to Grunion, Department of Fish and Game, 4665 Lampson Avenue, Suite C, Los Calamitous, CA 90720. It is also available on the DFG's Web site at www.dfg.ca.gov/mrd/gruschd.html.
