SAN DIEGO -- San Diego Gas & Electric agreed to purchase 300 megawatts of solar power, with the potential for another 600 megawatts, from a facility in the Imperial Valley, the company announced Wednesday.
SDG&E will purchase the solar energy from Arizona-based Stirling Energy Systems, which operates the 3-square-mile solar facility.
The San Diego-based utility and Stirling have agreed to a 20-year contract to first purchase 300 megawatts, with future options for an additional 600 megawatts as the solar facility continues to expand, the company said.
SDG&E also announced that it has purchased about 4 megawatts of energy from a local biogas landfill project.
"At SDG&E, we have pledged to tap resources like solar and biogas power to meet 20 percent of our customers' energy needs by 2010," said Edwin Guiles, chairman and chief executive officer of SDG&E.
The first phase of the solar energy purchase will supply about 3.7 percent of SDG&E's customer energy needs, according to the utility.
The solar energy purchase will require that an additional transmission line be built to bring the electricity to SDG&E's customers in San Diego and Orange counties, according to SDG&E.
