With playoffs assured, it's decision time

SAN DIEGO ---- Padres manager Bruce Bochy and his staff are going to have some tough decisions when choosing the 25 players for the team's playoff roster.

"We have some decisions to make, and we need to get the staff together and talk," Bochy said Wednesday.

In a short series, a best-of-five like the division series, most managers favor carrying just 10 pitchers. That leaves more wiggle room for position players.

Following is a best-guess scenario on a playoff roster:

> Pitchers (10): Jake Peavy, Adam Eaton, Woody Williams, Pedro Astacio, Brian Lawrence, Akinori Otsuka, Rudy Seanez, Scott Linebrink, Clay Hensley and Trevor Hoffman. Left out are Chan Ho Park, Craig Breslow and Chris Hammond.

> Catches (2): Ramon Hernandez and Miguel Olivo.

> Infielders (5): Khalil Greene, Mark Loretta, Joe Randa, Mark Sweeney and Sean Burroughs. Left out is Manny Alexander.

> Outfielders (4): Ryan Klesko, Brian Giles, Dave Roberts and Ben Johnson.

> Utility (4): Eric Young, Robert Fick, Xavier Nady and Damian Jackson.

Next season

The Padres released their 2006 schedule. The team opens at home with a three-game series against the San Francisco Giants, starting April 3.

The interleague games are at home against the Seattle Mariners and Oakland Athletics and on the road against Los Angeles Angels and Texas Rangers.

The season wraps up with three games at St. Louis and three at Arizona.

Eaton revisited

Adam Eaton had one of his worst starts of the season Tuesday, allowing nine hits and six runs in 3 1/3 innings.

Bochy didn't pull his punches Wednesday when talking about his right-hander.

"Honestly, that wasn't a very good outing," Bochy said. "His velocity was fine, but he had trouble getting the ball down. His stuff was good, and that's encouraging, but he made way too many mistakes."

Short hops

CF Dave Roberts, who is nursing a strained quadriceps, jogged lightly but said rest and rehab are the best cure. He hopes to be in the lineup Friday. ... Slugging 3B Corey Smith, who hit .254 with 18 homers and 73 RBIs at Double-A Mobile, has been added to the Padres' contingent in the Arizona Fall League, replacing 2B Josh Barfield.
