Double-runway option for Lindbergh is eliminated

SAN DIEGO ---- A proposal to add a second, parallel runway to Lindbergh Field was killed Monday by the San Diego County Airport Authority board.

The proposal, which was one of several being considered as an expansion of or addition to the soon-to-be overcrowded Lindbergh, was dropped because it would have had too much impact on the Point Loma area, said Angela Shafer-Payne, an airport authority official who is overseeing the airport site selection process.

The plan would have displaced nearly 19,000 residents of the area surrounding the airport and would have created a high-noise zone for nearly 32,000 people.

Other proposals, including those that would put airports in Campo or Imperial Valley, are still on the table, Shafer-Payne said.
