Apparent suicide victim identified

SAN DIEGO - A man who fatally shot himself in his University City condominium during a standoff with San Diego police was identified Saturday as a 29-year-old student.
An autopsy is scheduled tomorrow on the body of Khaled Yasufi, medical examiner Investigator Sal Rodriguez said.
Police were sent to the 8700 block of Costa Verde Boulevard after someone reported a strong odor coming from a condo about 1 p.m. Friday, SDPD Sgt. Jim Schorr said.
A man in the condo told officers everything was fine and shut the door, Schorr said. Within a couple of minutes, a gunshot was heard, prompting police to clear the building, Schorr said.
Police eventually sent in a camera-equipped robot, which transmitted images of a body in the unit. When officers made entry after a standoff of about six hours, a chemical lab was found in the bathroom of the condo, police said.
Rodriguez said he did not know where Yasufi went to school.

T. Holmes wrote on Oct 12, 2005 4:25 AM:Looks like this would be the kind of story that would get a lot of attention. Reporters either go on an on about a story with facts that do not much pertain to the actual story or they totally leave out the most interesting draw point of the story in which this story is such an example of. What kind of journalism is this? Please dig deeper into this one! Thanks.

Mike wrote on Oct 12, 2005 10:21 AM:I thought I was the only one who wanted to know more, until I read the other comments. This has been reported not so much as a news story, but as a running headline rolling past the screeen under a CNN Talking Head. Come on reporters--there has got to be some more meat on these bones. Was he making drugs or bommbs? Is there a connection to the SDSU grad student recently arrested for operating a clandestine drug lab? Two days has gone by and we don't know what Khaled Yasufi was up to in our fair city.
friend wrote on Oct 12, 2005 10:59 AM:He graduated from UCSD with honors in Chemistry and Biology degrees. They have his name wrong. It is not Khaled Yasufi, but is Khaled Yusufi. He was a good guy, not a terrorist. He is from Afghanistan, and moved here when he was young, and never returned to Afghanistan. I know it looks suspicious when an Arabic sounding name has a chemical lab, but I strongly believe he was not engaged in any terrorist activities. I also understand the media would hide this type of story, to avoid any negative backlash on certain ethnic groups.
Jan wrote on Oct 13, 2005 9:35 AM:My daughter lives in the apartment building on the same floor. What is going on here? Are the residents at risk for chemical poisoning from the lab?
Wondering wrote on Oct 13, 2005 10:00 AM:friend wrote: "He was a good guy, not a terrorist. He is from Afghanistan, and moved here when he was young, and never returned to Afghanistan." Hmmm,... That pretty much describes the profile of the folks who attacked the London Underground in July. They arrived in Britain as kids, or were born there. They were known to their neighbors as 'really nice guys'.
BillB wrote on Oct 13, 2005 12:45 PM:Good guy, non-terrorist types from Afghanistan shoot themselves in the head when cops are about to discover their hobby (building home chemistry labs?) Perhaps the kind should've taken up something a little more mainstream. Buy an XBox, dude.
Renee wrote on Oct 13, 2005 7:50 PM:Have there been any updates on this story at all? I've tried googling for info and am coming up with nothing. What the heck is going on that this is getting swept under the carpet??
J. Erickson wrote on Oct 14, 2005 6:31 PM:Well look at it this way he freaked out when the cops came probley thought he was going to be in deep trouble shot himself to save the humiliation of himself and family.....might be a terrorist never know but was most likely in it for the money enough said...remember he killed himself. could of been high...but if you ask me he seems like a ucsd nerd turned bad for extra cash knew he was too smart for this kind of stuff...Dead...what use is that fancy degree when you have a felony like that over you head.
nobody wrote on Oct 15, 2005 9:46 AM:if u guys are saying he's a terrorist why is it that u stereotype all arabic named people as terrorists... stop it's really annoying I agree with the person who said he shot himself because of the humiliation... don't u get it if he did go to jail how would he get out of all that and use his degree???!!! It's not easy for one to get his reputation back... but do not stereotype arabic people or arabic named people as terrorists... because no one stereotypes all other people as being with certain groups and stuff
Perspective wrote on Oct 18, 2005 4:31 PM:friend wrote: "He was a good guy, not a terrorist." He may not have been a terrorist, but he's not a good guy. Good guys don't cook ecstasy in their apartments. First, that endangers his neighbors. Second, E is not a benign drug, despite it's reputation as a party drug. It causes permanent changes to the brain on first usage, and it can even (rarely) be fatal even on the first ingestion. Third, he was obviously making more than he could personally use and was virtually certainly going to be selling it -- therefore he was endangering his neighors and preying on societies marginalized for his own selfish interests. Nice guy my arse.
friend wrote on Oct 18, 2005 8:33 PM:To Perspective: He was a good guy to me. But thanks for your subjective opinion. Opinions vary, and he was my friend, and I had no idea of his activities. Obviously, you have strong opinions about X, I don't have any opinions about X. Therefore, his activities don't sway my opinion of a friend. I originally posted because every hard core right wing website posted he was a terrorist. And I do have an opinion on terrorism, so you took my statement out of context. Next time respond within the meaning of my words.
spencer wrote on Oct 19, 2005 12:42 PM:This story appears to be being buried by local news media and the university. The UCSD Guardian regularly has a Lights & Sirens column tracking police incidents. The day Oct 7 is conveniently missing. There is no mention in any official UCSD news about the incident. Why do prestigious american universities repeatedly admit people with nefarious backgrounds? Makes you wonder. Did they know about his drug manufacturing abilities?
Alex wrote on Oct 22, 2005 11:51 AM:He had an ectasy lab, not a bomb lab, genius. Ectasy = party pill if you can't make the connection. Why would a guy making a PARTY PILL have any ties to terrorist. Some of you really lack simple critical thinking skills.
Wondering wrote on Oct 22, 2005 5:29 PM:My dear Alex, the original story, (this one above), appeared on October 8th. The only information supplied was that, "...a chemical lab was found in the bathroom of the condo, police said." No further information was made available until October 14th. That's six days during which folks were left to freely speculate as to the nature of the lab. If you will review the comments below, -genius, you will see that many were written before the 14th. Oh, and by the way, this lab was no hobby. It was a large lab capable of making at least 150,000 pills. It's no secret that a major source of financing for terrorists is the drug trade. Please pay more attention to the flow of the news, and, thanks for playing.
Val wrote on Oct 26, 2005 12:50 PM:I saw a story on national news today about a handful of incidents involving Muslim terrorist STUDENTS at US universities. This UCSD student who lived one block from me was one of the stories. Where is the local and national coverage?! Why does the media hide these stories and dumb us down by telling us who Tom Crusie is impregnating?! Homeland security has visited UTC mall with warnings that it is a prime target for student terrorists attacks...

A couple of the guys involved with 9/11 were at a community college in SD back in 2001 Osama Awadallah, 21, a Jordanian who is a permanent resident of the United States, was one of three college students picked up a month ago by the FBI in San Diego and held as material witnesses in connection with the September 11 attacks. There was a woman at MIT, Aafia Siddiqui, 32, once an award-winning student, who was with Al Qaeda Colleges and universities are backdoors for entrance into this country. We turn a blind eye to it.
