American Indian film series at CSUSM begins Nov. 2

SAN MARCOS ---- Five films about American Indians will be shown at Cal State San Marcos in November as part of the university's Native American Film Series.

All the films will be open to the public, and there will be no admission charge.

The series will kick off at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 2 with "Thunderheart," a murder mystery starring Val Kilmer that is set on an Oglaga Sioux reservation. This movie will be shown in Academic Hall 102.

The next four films will be shown on consecutive Mondays, from Nov. 7 through 28.

The Nov. 7 film will be "Incident at Oglaga: The Leonard Peltier Story." The screening will begin at 6 p.m. in Arts 240, with a panel discussion to follow.

On Nov. 14, the university will screen "Dance Me Outside," a Canadian drama about tensions between Anglos and American Indians. This screening will begin at 7 p.m. in Arts 240.

"Powwow Highway" will be screened at 6 p.m. on Nov. 21 in Arts 240. The movie focuses on the hardships of living on a reservation.

The final film, "Smoke Signals," will begin at 6 p.m. on Nov. 28 in Arts 240. The film has won awards for its realistic depiction of American Indian life.
