Sen. Morrow, at chamber luncheon, decries illegal immigration

ENCINITAS ---- State Sen. Bill Morrow's call for increased border enforcement received nods of approval Thursday during a luncheon address hosted by the Encinitas Chamber of Commerce.
"We're finally getting action on that issue," said Morrow, a Republican from Oceanside. "Because of the squeaky wheel, we're getting attention in the halls of Congress."
Morrow's district includes most of North County. He served six years in the Assembly, starting in 1992, and is in his seventh year in the Senate.
During an informal speech before about 40 chamber members, Morrow made no mention of running for Rep. Randy "Duke" Cunningham's seat in 2006. But Morrow announced the move months ago, and his campaign committees have collected more than $20,000 to compete for the seat that the embattled congressman has said he will vacate when his term ends.
Instead, Morrow heaped praise on Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, stumped for measures on the Nov. 8 ballot and credited Republican lawmakers for defending business interests.
Above all, he decried illegal immigration.
He said a federal homeland security bill does not provide enough new agents to patrol the border.
Schwarzenegger has the authority to declare a state of emergency at the border and should do just that, Morrow said, adding that state authorities would be within their rights to help secure the border.
He said he did not disagree with calls for the military, National Guard or even civilian border watchers such as the Minutemen to provide border security.
"I support the Minutemen," Morrow said.
Without saying who would run it or how to pay for it, he said that a border police agency could enforce immigration laws at the border and anywhere else in the state.
In August, Morrow hosted an immigration forum in Carlsbad that drew hundreds of demonstrators as well as riot police.
Thursday's luncheon had no such drama.
Asked by a guest whether he was planning any future immigration forums, Morrow said, "I think we did enough for a while."
Morrow found support in combating illegal immigration from Angel Cope-Morris, a real estate agent.
Cope-Morris told Morrow she was trying to sell an Encinitas house near another house "where several illegal families are living."
She said some of the residents had drained a swimming pool and were living inside of it. Campers in the backyard housed still more people, she said.
"They're taking over the community, so to speak," Cope-Morris said.
"This is a very real problem," Morrow responded. "It goes on in Oceanside, in North County and everywhere else."

These politicians don't complain when they eat the food produced by immigrants every day. If they were really against "illegal immigration", I'd like to see them boycott food!

Randy "Duke" Cunningham's seat in 2006, it seems like just another case of political grandstanding to me.

It's the easy way out for a select group. What Morrow is doing is saying that we cannot financially afford to have illegals in this country, whether they be from Mexico, China, or elsewhere. Our nation's financial system depends on checks and balances and that is not what is happening now. Close the borders, whether they be on the ground, in our ports, or at our airports. We must begin to act now!

They only spoke German but the learned the language. They were not "bitter" that they couldn't vote with German ballots. Since they were here LEGALLY they felt like they were part of the country and were welcomed. We can not excuse ANY person of ANY ethnic group for usurping our border and sneaking accross illegally. Every nation , including Mexico, has a right to determine who comes in and when. Steve in Carlsbad.

He is a lame duck as he is termed out in state politics, still trolling for votes. It's sad that we see no real answers to issues that face we Californians-just grandstanding for votes!

They have had a couple of retired INS. workers, who put together the paperwork, and then INS just comes and stamps the work all at one time on a group of applicants. The classload is reasonable and organized, so they are able to work faster. I suggest that the person with the Canadian bride go to Catholic Social Services for assistance.

Californians spend approximately $7.7 BILLION annually on education for illegal alien children and for their U.S.-born siblings, but we don' need no stinkin' border enforcement. Uncompensated medical outlays for health care provided to the state's illegal alien population amount to about $1.4 BILLION a year, but we don' need no stinkin' border enforcement. Even if the estimated tax contributions of illegal immigrant workers are subtracted, net outlays still amount to nearly $9 BILLION per year, but we don' need no stinkin' border enforcement.

Marcus wrote on Oct 21, 2005 7:15 PM:Thank goodness that we have legislators like Senator Morrow who are willing to address the most important issue of our time. We can not as a country seriously discuss national security without addressing our pourous border. We can not address the problems with healthcare without talking about the overhwleming cost of providing "free" emergent and long term health services to illegal immigrants. We can not address the cost of public education without talking about the high number of illegal immigrant children in the public school system (most of their parents pay disproportionately lower taxes than the rest of us). We can not address the costs of public safety services and the slow and expensive reponses that have resulted from a massive influx of illegal immigrants. Bravo to you Senator Morrow for taking the stand that so many politicians are scared to.
Debbie wrote on Oct 21, 2005 9:15 PM:Re: Zoe's comments. I doubt that the Catholic services would be interested in helping a Canadian bride get a green card unless she is Catholic. They are mainly interested in the ones from Mexico and especially Catholic to add to their Church numbers.
Dana, Oceanside wrote on Oct 22, 2005 7:39 AM:I keep hearing that illegals only take jobs picking fruit and fruit prices will go up if we kick them out, BOGUS. They are taking ALL labor related jobs. In 1978 I was a carpenter making $8.00 per hour. Nearly 30 years later illegal labor has driven the wage down and back 30 years (it's still $8.00 per hr.). I was born here 49 years ago. Quit hiring illegals to mow your lawn and do it yourself. Report anyone that hires illegals. If you hire them, they will keep coming.
