CLASS NOTES
Elks offer scholarships
Applications are available for the Elks National Foundation's Most Valuable Student contest. Local Elks Clubs are participating in the program.
The Elks will award 500 scholarships nationally. Applicants will be judged on financial need, leadership and scholarship. Vocational grants are also available.
There have been five national winners from Southwest County in the last four years, according to the Temecula Valley Elks.
The Lake Elsinore Elks Lodge awarded $11,500 in scholarships last year and the Elks Ladies gave another $4,500.

Vendors sought for school's swap meet
TEMECULA ---- The Temecula Valley High School PTSA is seeking vendors for a swap meet Dec. 10.
The swap meet will be from 8 a.m. to noon at the school. Funds will be used for programs such as Red Ribbon Week, No Butts Week, Safe Driving campaign, violence awareness and scholarships.

Auction for Autism planned for March
TEMECULA ---- An Auction for Autism is planned for March 11 at Pechanga Resort & Casino. The proceeds will benefit the Temecula Valley Unified School District's Special Needs/Autistic preschool program and the Autism Research Institute in San Diego.

Tutors needed for program
LAKE ELSINORE ---- The Coalition to Improve Education is looking for part-time tutors for an after-school program in the Lake Elsinore area.
The coalition provides literacy and character education to elementary and middle school students.
Tutors should have English Language Development reading skills. Speaking English and Spanish is a plus, but not a requirement. Training will be provided.

Parent center offers services
MURRIETA ---- The Murrieta Valley Unified School District Parent Center at Avaxat Elementary School offers a variety of services and courses.
The Parent Center Resource Library is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday. It offers books, videos and other items on parenting, child development and other topics.
Registration is under way for Parenting with PRICE and Co-Parenting with PRICE courses, which begin in January.
Upcoming will be first aid and CPR courses. A number of support groups also meet at the center, 24300 Las Brisas Drive. Some of the courses meet at other locations.

Eight-grader wins poster contest
TEMECULA ---- Kirsten Michael, an eighth-grader at Temecula Middle School, was the winner of a local poster competition sponsored by the Temecula Lions Club. Kirsten's poster was chosen from approximately 110 local entries, based on its originality, artistic merit and portrayal of the contest theme, "Peace Without Borders."
Kirsten's poster was one of more than 350,000 submitted worldwide in the 18th annual Lions International Peace Poster Contest. The 13-year-old created her poster in her art class, taught by Bonnie Martland.
Kirsten's poster was chosen from approximately 110 entries, based on its originality, artistic merit and portrayal of the contest theme, "Peace Without Borders." It will advance to the Lions district level, facing competition from entries submitted throughout Riverside and San Bernardino counties. The winner of that competition will be judged with entries throughout California and Nevada.
On the final, international level, one grand prize winner and 23 merit award winners will be selected. The grand prize includes a cash award of $2,500 plus a trip for the winner and two family members to New York City for the awards ceremony at Lions Day with the United Nations. The 23 merit award winners will each receive a certificate and a cash award of $500.
Liptak honored at Valparaiso
TEMECULA ---- Rachel Liptak of Temecula received Presidential Honors at Valparaiso University in Indiana for the 2004-05 school year.
The award is given to student athletes who earn a cumulative grade-point average of 3.25 or better after at least three semesters. Liptak, who graduated with a degree in English in the spring, was a member of the women's track team. She threw the discus and shot put while at Temecula Valley High School.
She is the daughter of Mark and Helen Liptak.
