Parks may open by end of 2006

WILDOMAR ---- If all goes smoothly, county supervisors may vote next month on requesting quotes to spruce up parks in Wildomar and Lakeland Village, officials say.

Plans to refurbish Marna O'Brien, Windsong and Heritage Regency parks in Wildomar and Perret Park in Lakeland Village are being finalized, according to officials. The parks were closed when voters rejected a $25 annual maintenance fee six years ago.

The plans to refurbish the parks are scheduled to be presented to the community at an annual Town Hall meeting, said George Cambero, presiding officer of the Wildomar Municipal Advisory Council. The council is appointed by and advises Supervisor Bob Buster.

The Town Hall meeting starts at 9 a.m. Saturday at David A. Brown Middle School, 21861 Grand Ave. in Wildomar.

Cambero said Monday it is difficult to say how much it will cost to refurbish the parks.

"We have an idea, but it depends what the lowest bid comes in at," he said.

Kami Sabetzadeh, co-chairman of the Wildomar-Lakeland Village area Redevelopment Agency, said that the panel approved spending $6 million earlier this month to reopen the parks.

Aurelio Aguirre, regional manager for the county Economic Development Agency, said earlier this week that the parks could be open by the end of 2006 ---- some possibly sooner.

The plans include a pier that extends into Lake Elsinore at Perret Park, which is located on the west shore of Lake Elsinore, Aguirre said.

At Marna O'Brien Park on Palomar Street, plans call for a concession area and three multipurpose ball fields; Windsong Park on Prairie Street could have new playground equipment; and Heritage Regency Park on Autumn Oaks Place may have a dog area, he said.

Buster is set to deliver the Town Hall's keynote address.

He said his address may include an update on the county's plan to purchase a large piece of land for an additional park in Wildomar.

In addition to presenting the park plans, county officials are also scheduled to talk about emergency preparedness.

Representatives from county fire and sheriff's offices and Cynthia Quigley, county emergency services coordinator, are planning to discuss their agency's preparations and procedures.

"We're also going to have information on individual preparedness," Quigley said.
