Carlsbad defense stout again as Lancers reach DI championship game
By: SCOTT BAIR - Staff Writer | ∞
CARLSBAD ---- The Carlsbad High defense has a lot of pride. After spending four quarters battling this purple-clad crew, opposing offenses have become accustomed to leaving with none.
On Friday, Bonita Vista became the third Carlsbad opponent in four games to leave without any points, either. The Lancers reserved a spot in the CIF Division I championship game with a 34-0 semifinal victory. They will play Torrey Pines, which defeated Vista in the other semifinal, at Qualcomm Stadium on Dec. 13.
"It doesn't get much better than this," Carlsbad coach Bob McAllister said.
"We've been playing outstanding football lately and we did again tonight. I couldn't be more proud of these kids."
The Lancers got to the finals primarily due to a defense that has allowed just seven points since the beginning of November. Cody Vander Linden, Mendalson Covington and Brock Butler lead a group that has manhandled the opposition as of late.
That trend continued against the Barons (10-2), who gained just 106 yards in the game. The Lancers (10-2) had three sacks and an interception and held standout Bonita Vista running back Starr Fuimaono to just 37 yards on eight carries.
"We have the attitude that nobody can score on us," Butler said. "We go hard on every play and we don't quit until they punt."
The Lancers' offense didn't have to punt very often. Carlsbad gained 432 yards and scored almost at will.
Matt Christian completed 7 of 10 passes for 141 yards and three touchdowns and a host of running backs gained an average of 6.1 yards per carry.
The Lancers jumped out to a 21-0 first-half lead thanks to Christian's precision passing. He threw two 25-yard touchdown strikes to receiver Evan Simmons and also found Ryan Benson in the end zone from 7 yards out.
Antwon Dawson completed the scoring with two second-half touchdown runs.
The Lancers already have an Avocado League title. Now they've set their sights on a CIF championship.
"This season is almost perfect," Christian said. "One more win and it will be."

dls wrote on Dec 4, 2005 4:32 PM:bonita vista should have never been playing in this game. They should have never been given the third seed. And they shouldn't be in the division one playoffs, because they can't compete with the big boys from the north. But they did play, and it gave Carlsbad a cake walk into the finals... Torrey Pines will roll 21 - 0.
