Padres pick pair of pitchers in Rule 5 draft

SAN DIEGO ---- The Padres wrapped up a busy four days at the winter meetings in Dallas by landing two pitchers in the major-league portion of the Rule 5 draft Thursday.
With the sixth pick in the first round, the club selected right-hander Seth Etherton away from the Kansas City Royals. The Padres also sent cash to the Tampa Bay Devil Rays for right-hander Steven Andrade, the No. 3 overall pick of the Rule 5 draft.
Andrade, 27, went 3-2 with a 1.97 ERA in 35 relief appearances last year for Toronto's Double-A team in New Hampshire.
Etherton, 29, was 1-1 with a 6.62 ERA in three starts for the Oakland Athletics and 7-7 with a 2.42 ERA in 20 games (19 starts) for Triple-A Sacramento. He signed a minor-league contract with the Royals last month.
Both pitchers must remain on the Padres' 25-man roster next season or be offered back to their original clubs for $25,000.
In the draft's minor-league phase, the Padres added three players: outfielder Joey Gomes from Tampa Bay, left-hander Andy Santana from the Chicago Cubs and infielder Pete Maestrales from Kansas City.
They also lost six players: right-handers Eddie Bonine and Geivy Garcia, and infielders Peter Ramos and Ronnie Merrill from Double-A Mobile; and left-hander Edgar Huerta and outfielder Brian Burgamy from Single-A Lake Elsinore.
