VISTA ---- The bodies of four aviators, including a 28-year-old Air Force lieutenant from Vista, were recovered Thursday in Georgia after the Navy jet they were flying crashed two days earlier, Navy officials said Friday.
According to the officials, the Vista man, 1st Lt. Jason Davis, died in the wreck along with Navy Lt. Jason Manse, 30, Omaha, Neb.; Ens. Elizabeth Bonn, 23, Wilkes-Barre, Pa.; and retired Navy Cmdr. Dave Roark, 68, Pensacola, Fla.
The Navy said that Davis, a Rancho Buena Vista High School graduate who was stationed in Pensacola, was a military flight student, as was Bonn.
The crew had been missing since leaving Chattanooga, Tenn., on a training mission Tuesday morning, officials said.
A Georgia State Patrol helicopter pilot found the wreckage Wednesday night in the remote and rugged Chattahoochee National Forrest, Navy officials said.
The bodies were removed Thursday evening and taken to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation Crime Lab in DeKalb County, Walker County Sheriff Steve Wilson said. They will remain there until the Navy takes them to Dover Air Force Base in Delaware for autopsies.
The Navy T-39 Sabreliner training aircraft was assigned to Training Squadron 86 at the Naval Air Station in Pensacola.
The crew left the air station early Tuesday for a one-day routine training flight to Chattanooga, according to authorities. After refueling, the jet headed back to the air station later that morning, but never arrived.
Search teams were dispatched and the wreckage was found the next day about 30 miles south of Chattanooga.
Navy officials said the cause of the crash had not been determined. A Navy investigative team arrived at the site Thursday, but the probe could take months, Navy officials said.
