Two Pendleton Marines killed in bombing

CAMP PENDLETON ----- Two young Marines based at Camp Pendleton were killed in Iraq last week when a car filled with explosives blew up, according to the base and the Pentagon.

The men, both from California, were with Camp Pendleton's Third Battalion, First Marine Regiment of the First Marine Division.

Both had earned Purple Heart awards, meaning they had survived other battle injuries before the attack that killed them.

Lance Cpl. Brandon C. Dewey, 20, of Tracy, and Cpl. Carlos H. Arellanopandura, 22, of Los Angeles, died Friday in the attack, which was a suicide bombing, according to a statement from Camp Pendleton.

Their deaths brought the number of North County-based Marines killed in the Iraq war to 271. At least 2,237 American troops and Defense Department workers have died in Iraq since the war began.

In Tracy, a town about the size of Carlsbad tucked just north of San Jose, Dewey's family said the young man had survived a previous suicide bombing in 2004 only to die in a similar attack on Friday.

Before leaving for his second tour, Dewey told his parents not to grieve too much if he were to die in Iraq because he always wanted to be a Marine and believed in what he was doing.

"He told his sister that's what he was made for," said Dewey's mother, Julia Conover, on Monday.

Flowers and food from well-wishers filled the family's home, where a table overflowed with pictures of Dewey ---- at prom, with family, hanging out with friends.

Dewey was the fifth service member from the town to die in the Iraq war. The family has not made funeral plans yet, but intends to hold a public memorial service, they said.

Family members of Arellanopandura could not be located for comment. In addition to his Purple Heart, he had received a number of other awards for service and good conduct in his three-and-a-half-year career with the Marines, according to a statement from the base.

Dewey had also earned additional awards for service and good conduct.

One can only imagine the sorrow I feel for his families loss. Nothing I can say will make things better. God Speed LCpl Dewey, I'll see you on the other side. G

I always pause and say a prayer and mourn them all even though I never met them. As a mother of teenage boys, I am particular moved by the 19 - 25 ages but my husband says what about the 30 -40 crowd who probably leaves a wife/husband and kids behind. They are all precious and I hope this young boy and all the others did not die invane. It is time for us to turn over Iraq to the Iraqi people. People have been in Iraq far longer than people have populated the North American continent. They really can do this themselves.

We just lost two more good men who believe that they can make a difference in the world. No one wants this war, but we have to do what we need to do in order to have freedom for all.

Second he-she doesn't even have the basic education to string words together in a comprehensible manner. My wife and I live in a mobile home park not too far from Camp Pendleton. We are friends with a retired Lt.Col. who was the commanding officer of that same Battalion in Viet Nam. They are known in the Corps as The Thundering Third. He is still very close to his old Battalion and, with him, I have been visiting the 3/1 at Camp Pendleton almost every week. I have not met Lance Cpl. Dewey or Cpl. Arrelanopandura but I'll bet they had the same attitude and commitment as the ones we talk to every week. They believe in what they are doing over there and they are willing to give their lives, if necessary, to accomplish their mission. What is their mission? To fight the terrorists and train the Iraqi army so they can defend themselves. Every one of these young heroes that I have talked to( I didn't mention that they are recuperating wounded veterans)say the same thing. They are close to accomplishing that mission. So, PLEASE, Mr.-Ms. no name keep your INANE comments to yourself until you come into the real world! Our condolences ,also, go to the families and friends of those brave, brave boys. We feel as if we knew them. Semper Fi Roy

The boys with him are his family now..he has been there since september. They signed up for this you guys...they know they might have to give their lives for their country. SEMPER FI, THE FEW AND THE PROUD...so stop whining about a war you know nothing about. Dont get me wrong my hart stopps every time i hear of anyone being killed over there...but they died with honor. They gave their lives. I wish we werent in this war but it is reality and many Irqi people DO want us there. So im proud of our boys fighting for us and so thankful for them giving their lives for us.

A. Thompson wrote on Jan 27, 2006 5:29 PM:Let these men not be forgotten for their courage. May they also be an example to the many young "boys" and "girls" out there running around in their fancy cars, clothes, etc..., looking forward to nothing except immediate gratification! God bless these and all those who have lost their lives serving our country. May their families have comfort in knowing that they are remembered in our hearts.
