North County Community News: Angel Society approves donations

FALLBROOK ---- The Fallbrook Angel Society Board of Directors recently approved $23,625 in donations to the following local organizations:

  • Potter Junior High School for woodworking equipment for the art and woodshop programs.

  • Bonsall-Fallbrook Little League to sponsor three players and help upgrade the Zeke Weaver playing fields.

  • Sullivan Middle School eighth grade to assist in the cost of the annual Washington D.C. trip.

  • Operation Homefront to provide assistance to needy local families of military members who have been deployed.

  • Friends of Fallbrook Community Center to help replace dated equipment in the center's computer lab.

  • Laubach Literacy in Fallbrook to help provide books and teaching materials for adults learning to speak, read and write English.

  • North County Disabled Services to provide transportation funds for recreation activities such as hand-cycling, bowling, soccer, golf and skiing.

  • Fallbrook High School for scholarship pledges that will be awarded to five graduating seniors on June 13.

    The Fallbrook Angel Society uses proceeds from the Angel Thrift Shop, member dues and other donations to fund requests for worthy community projects. All the merchandise sold in the Angel Shop comes from community donations. The Angel Shop accepts donations from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays at the shop at 1002 S. Main St.

    Fallbrook Gem and Mineral Society to meet

    Knights of Columbus plan dinner dance


    FALLBROOK ---- The Fallbrook Knights of Columbus will host a St. Patrick's dinner dance beginning at 6 p.m. March 11 in Sheridan Hall at St. Peter's Catholic Community at 450 S. Stage Coach Lane.

    The meal features corned beef, cabbage, potatoes and dessert. There will be an Irish pub and entertainment by Kevin Moyles and the Shamrockers and an Irish dancer.

    Senior center sponsors tour


    FALLBROOK ---- The Fallbrook Senior Center is accepting reservations for a trip to Four Queens in downtown Las Vegas May 2 through 4. The bus loads at 8:30 a.m. and departs at 9 a.m. from the Fallbrook Senior Center at 399 Heald Lane. Forty people are needed for the trip.

    Blood drives scheduled


    FALLBROOK ---- The San Diego Blood Bank will conduct blood drives in the Fallbrook area as follows:

  • 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. March 4 in the Major Market Shopping Center, 845 S. Main St. The drive is sponsored by the Fallbrook Kiwanis Club.

  • 12:30 to 5:30 p.m., March 9, Fallbrook Community Center, 341 Heald Lane. Sponsor is the Fallbrook Hospital Auxiliary.

    Donors at these drives will receive a limited-edition blood bank "do it for the doughnut t-shirt," a voucher for two free admissions to the San Diego Natural History Museum's exhibit "Genome: The Secret of How Life Works" and a voucher for a free whale-watching trip from Helgren's Oceanside Sportfishing & Islandia Sportfishing. Due to rising fuel costs, there will be a $5 surcharge per person.

    Donors also will receive a medical history review and mini-physical, which includes blood pressure, pulse and temperature checks.

    Anyone who is at least 17 years old, weighs at least 110 pounds and is in good health may be eligible to donate. A good meal is recommended prior to donation.

    10th annual Herb Festival set


    ENCINITAS ---- Quail Botanical Gardens will host the 10th Annual Herb Festival, with Spring Plant Sale and Tomatomania March 11 and 12 at the gardens, 230 Quail Gardens Drive. More than 20 speakers will discuss unique aspects of herbalism, including herb growing and landscaping, skin care products and native medicinal plants and cooking with herbs.

    'Penguin' film screens March 9

    Ray Bradbury Visits library

    Camp Hope offers help for kids


    CARLSBAD ---- Hospice of the North Coast is accepting reservations for the 10th Annual Camp H.O.P.E. weekend for children ages 6 to 20 and their families who are grieving the death of a loved one.The camp will be held June 9 to 11 at Green Oak Ranch in Vista at 1237 Green Oak Road. Camp H.O.P.E. will include meals, a private cabin, support groups, arts and crafts, swimming, a climbing wall and opportunities to learn more about handling grief, all in a caring, healing environment.

    Friday fish dinners to begin today

    ESCONDIDO ---- Registration for the spring session of recreation classes offered through the city's community services department will start March 6. Most classes begin the week of April 3.

    A wide variety of classes are scheduled for adults in computers, personal enrichment, arts and crafts, music, dance, health and fitness, tennis and golf. For youths, classes will be offered in arts and crafts, preschool, animal exploration, cooking, yoga, dance, music, gymnastics, tennis, ice skating and golf.

    New classes offered for adults include "Poker---- Texas Hold 'Em," "Beaded Bracelet ---- Spring Garland," "Mosaic Art II" and "Glass Fusing ---- What's It All About."     'Love Is in the Air' concert set

    'The Kite Runner,' Afghan experience presentation set


    ESCONDIDO ---- The Escondido Public Library will present "Afghanistan: The Afghan Experience and 'The Kite Runner'" with Dr. Mir Hekmatullah Sadat at 7 p.m. March 9 at the main library, 239 S. Kalmia St. This is another event being offered as part of the library's Escondido Reads: One City, One Book program, where everyone in Escondido is encouraged to read Khaled Hosseini's "The Kite Runner."

    Sadat is writing a dissertation on "The Kite Runner" and its relevance to the cultural and political experience of Afghans. He recently contributed to the History Channel's "The Mystery of the Afghan Gold." He received his doctorate from the Claremont Graduate University in Claremont.

    Museum, Youtheatre plan 2nd Saturday events

    Glass artist to give studio tours, demos


    ESCONDIDO ---- Escondido artist Joan Irving will open her studio from noon to 4 p.m. March 11 for hourly studio tours and demonstrations of her unique approach to creating modern art glass. Admission is free.

    Recently featured on KUSI-TV morning news, Irving is best known to Escondido locals for her public art installations on East Valley Parkway. Her award-winning fine art glass windows are signature features at San Diego International Airport.

    Daley Ranch hikes planned


    ESCONDIDO ---- Free, guided nature hikes are offered at Daley Ranch. All trails include steep and/or slippery sections. Bring at least a quart of water and wear a sun hat, sunscreen and hiking boots or treaded footwear. Youths younger than 18 must be with an adult. No pets are allowed. Meet at the Daley Ranch entrance on La Honda Drive.

  • 9:30 a.m. March 4: Naturalist Simone Green will lead a moderate to strenuous "More Walk, Less Talk." She will discuss how plants were used for food, medicine, clothing and building supplies.

  • 9 a.m. March 7: Join naturalist Tom Lyon to look for early spring birds on this easy to moderate hike.

    Parkinson's support group to meet


    LA JOLLA ---- The Parkinson's Resource Organization will hold a support group meeting for caregivers from 7 to 9 p.m. March 15 at Scripps Mende Well Being, 4305 La Jolla Village Drive. There is no charge; however, due to parking restrictions, reservations are required. Call (877) 775-4111.

    'Women in the Workplace' series to begin

    The topic will be "Leadership and the One Thing." Marcus Buckingham, leadership expert and author of "First, Break All the Rules" and "The One Thing You Need to Know," will share insights into the power of effective leadership and practical tools for becoming a leader who makes a difference.

    Brandeis group to host authors luncheon


    RANCHO BERNARDO ---- The Rancho Bernardo chapter of Brandeis University National Women's Committee will hold its annual Book and Author Luncheon from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. March 28 at the Rancho Bernardo Inn, El Bizcocho Room, 17550 Bernardo Oaks Drive. Cost of $38 includes luncheon, program and parking.

    The three authors who will present their books are British journalist Michael Henderson, author of nine books, including "See You After the Duration," a personal story about British children evacuated to America and Canada during World War II; Poway native Courtenay Harrold, author of "Rose Doyle," which follows the trials and difficulties faced by a factory worker struggling to make a meager existence for herself in Victorian London; and Jane Heller, a national best-selling author of a dozen novels, including "An Ex to Grind" about a Manhattan financial planner who has to pay alimony to her ex-husband, a former pro football player.

    Writing group to host author

    Curves food drive under way


    SAN MARCOS ---- Curves of San Marcos, a fitness center for women, is participating in the annual Curves Food Drive to benefit local food banks.

    Curves will waive its normal service fee for any new member who brings in a bag of nonperishable groceries and joins by March 11. Donations will benefit Interfaith Community Services in Escondido.

    Others wishing to contribute can drop off nonperishable food items Mondays through Saturdays during regular business hours through the end of March.

    Credit union names new chairman


    OCEANSIDE ---- The Board of Directors of Faith Based Federal Credit Union has announced that Joseph Molina has been appointed the new chairman of the board. Molina was one of the original charter members of the newly chartered community-owned financial institution. Faith Based Federal Credit Union is the only low-income designated credit union in San Diego County. Molina is an instructor at Park University teaching courses in organizational behavior, business management and development. He is also a business consultant for the Small Business Development Center on the Oceanside campus of MiraCosta College.

    How to become a voice-over performer


    OCEANSIDE ---- MiraCosta College's Community Services Program will hold a workshop, "Become a Voice-over Performer," from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on three Saturdays, March 4 through March 18, in Room 3103 at the college, 1 Barnard Drive.     OMA visits Palm Springs Art Museum


    OCEANSIDE ---- The Oceanside Museum of Art will take a bus trip to the Palm Springs Art Museum March 9. The bus will depart from the southwest corner of the parking lot at Westfield Plaza Camino Real and return at approximately 5:30 p.m.

    The trip will include an exhibition of Jack Lenor Larsen's textile designs and more than 75 objects from around the world that he collected during the last half-century. His work is grouped in four broad categories: Light and Translucency, Surface and Texture, Pattern and Color and Form and Structure.

    Also on view is the 37th Annual National Juried Exhibition representing the creative pulse of the art scene across the country.

    After arriving in Palm Springs, there will be time for a no-host lunch at one of the many restaurants along Palm Canyon Drive. At 1 p.m. a docent-led tour is planed at the museum.     Celtic harpist, storyteller to perform


    OCEANSIDE ---- The Oceanside Public Library and the Friends of the Oceanside Public Library will present award-winning Celtic harpist and storyteller Patrick Ball performing "The Fine Beauty of the Island" as part of the Spring 2006 Oceanside Public Library World Music Series at 7:30 p.m. March 11 at the Civic Center Library Community Rooms, 330 N. Coast Highway.

    Ball is one of the premier Celtic harp players in the world today and a captivating storyteller in the Celtic tradition.     Oceanside holds beach cleanup


    OCEANSIDE ---- The city of Oceanside is seeking volunteers to participate in an Oceanside Beach Cleanup from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. March 11 at the south side of the Oceanside Pier. Volunteers will receive gloves, bags, refreshments, free parking and community service hours.

    Mediation training offered

    OCEANSIDE ---- Outback Steakhouse will host a fundraiser for Women's American ORT (Organization for Rehabilitation through Training), Ocean Hills chapter, at noon March 18, 2585 Vista Way. Donation is $20 per person, $10 for children 10 and younger. The menu will include steak, chicken or salmon, Caesar salad, Aussie chips, beverage, cake and ice cream.
