MURRIETA ---- Bobbi Soltz, chief of staff for Assemblyman Ray Haynes, R-Murrieta, will be the speaker when the Murrieta Republican Women Federated meets at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday. Soltz will speak about legislative activity in Sacramento.

Outlet center drums up fun


LAKE ELSINORE ---- Kids Outlet, a program for mothers and their preschoolers at the Lake Elsinore Outlets, will feature a drum circle from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Thursday.

African drummers from the Musicians Workshop will show mothers and children how to play the drums, teaching timing and rhythm.

Owls topic for group


TEMECULA ---- Information about owls will be presented when the Elsinore-Murrieta-Anza Resource Conservation District meets at 4 p.m. Thursday.

Ginny Short from UC Riverside, who studies burrowing owls, will give information about local owls and the birds in general. Ed Stanton from the Center for Natural Land Management will talk about the ins and outs of conservation easements and how the district may want to get involved.

Landscape workshop set for Saturday


LAKE ELSINORE ---- Elsinore Valley Municipal Water District and Metropolitan Water District will host a free landscape workshop from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday.

The workshop is designed to educate homeowners on how to create and maintain a water-efficient landscape. The class will cover basic landscape design principles, sprinkler systems, native plants and efficient watering and fertilizing techniques.

Event to benefit mentoring program


TEMECULA ---- Community Reflection, a fundraiser for Mentoring Today for Tomorrow Inc., will be held from 7:30 p.m. Saturday.

The evening will include exploring the fundamentals of community intervention and inspirational songs and poetry. Murrieta City Councilman Rick Gibbs will speak.

Mentoring Today for Tomorrow Inc. is a nonprofit after-school program for children 9 to 18 years old.

The event will be at Embassy Suites, 29345 Rancho California Road.

Garden friends offer classes


RIVERSIDE ---- The Friends of the UC Riverside Botanic Gardens will offer the next in a series of adult education class Saturday with All About Plants.

Remaining classes are April 8, Water Gardens, for the Ground and in Containers; and May 13, Trees and Your Landscape.

Classes meet from 9:30 a.m. to noon at the Botanic Gardens conference room on the UCR campus. The cost is $30 for Friends members and $35 for others.

'Best loved' songs to be performed


SUN CITY ---- Singers Don and Jonel Christensen will perform "Best Loved Songs" with the Inland Valley Symphony at 3 p.m. March 12 at Webb Hall.

The program will include favorite selections from musical theater and well-known opera arias. Symphony selections will include a Duke Ellington medley and a salute to the Big Apple.

Starbucks offers community grants


Starbucks is offering an opportunity for California nonprofit agencies to participate in its first statewide giving program. The program will award grants totaling up to $1 million to local charitable agencies.

All registered 501(c)3 agencies with programs designed to help children in California are eligible to apply.

Application information is available at any Starbucks retail location or online at www.starbuckscalgiving.com. The deadline to apply is March 13.

The Starbucks California Giving Program helps support programs, services or projects that allow children the opportunity to grow and flourish in California communities.

Camp looking for counselors


MURRIETA ---- Camp Alandale in Idyllwild, a Christian camp for abused or orphaned children, is seeking adult volunteers to serve as camp counselors for a week this summer.

An information meeting will be held at 7 p.m. March 17 at Calvary Chapel Murrieta, 24225 Monroe Ave.

Teen photo contest under way


TEMECULA ---- The city of Temecula and Temecula Teen Council are sponsoring a teen photo contest for middle- and high-schoolers in the city. The theme is Recreation in Temecula.

Prizes will be awarded to the top three photos in each category and all photos entered will be displayed at the Community Recreation Center. The contest runs through April 14.

Queen gets promotion


TEMECULA ---- Hospital Corpsman First Class David Queen, a 1989 graduate of Temecula Valley High School, was to be commissioned as a lieutenant junior grade in the Navy's Medical Service Corps on Thursday at the Naval Medical Center in San Diego.

After completing five weeks of Officer Indoctrination School in Newport, R.I., he will be assigned to 1st Force Service Support Group, Camp Pendleton.

He is the son of Mary A. Queen of Temecula.

Bosma serving on Roosevelt


TEMECULA ---- Navy Petty Officer 3rd Class Andrew W. Bosma, grandson of Lefty and Marie Miller of Temecula, and his fellow shipmates are in the middle of a scheduled deployment while assigned to Strike Fighter Squadron 87 embarked aboard the aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt, homeported in Norfolk, Va.

Bosma's unit conducted more than 4,000 sorties and provided surveillance, reconnaissance and close air support to ground forces in Iraq.

Operation Steel Curtain provided aerial support for U.S. Marine and Iraqi forces and prevented insurgents from entering Iraq through the Syrian Border.

Bosma is a 1989 graduate of Capistrano Valley High School in Mission Viejo and joined the Navy in November 2001.

Clifford completes training


TEMECULA ---- Coast Guard Reserve Seaman Apprentice Jayne H. Clifford, daughter of Sarah H. and Jay W. Clifford of Temecula, recently graduated from the U.S. Coast Guard Recruit Training Center in Cape May, N.J.

During the eight-week training program, Clifford completed a training curriculum consisting of academics and practical instruction. Clifford and other recruits also received instruction on the Coast Guard's core values ---- honor, respect and devotion to duty ---- and how to apply them in their military performance and personal conduct. Clifford will join 36,000 other men and women who comprise the Coast Guard's force.

Locals complete basic training


Four people with ties to Southwest County recently completed U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill.

They are:

  • Navy Seaman Apprentice Joanne Pabate, daughter of Domitila C. and Primo M. Pabate of Temecula;

  • Navy Seaman Recruit Dan M. Freeman, son of Stacey A. Mefford and Larry E. Freeman of Temecula, a 2005 graduate of Rancho Vista High School in Temecula;

  • Navy Seaman Recruit Christopher L. Johnson, a 2005 graduate of Temescal Canyon High School;

  • Navy Seaman Apprentice Brandi L. Bess, sister of Brad M. Johnson of Murrieta.

    During the eight-week program, the recruits completed a variety of training, which included classroom study and practical instruction on naval customs, first aid, firefighting, water safety and survival, and shipboard and aircraft safety. An emphasis was also placed on physical fitness.

    The capstone event of boot camp is "Battle Stations," which gives recruits the skills and confidence they need to succeed in the fleet.
