Students of the Month honored
Students of the month have been announced from local high schools and honored by chambers of commerce.
The Lake Elsinore Valley Chamber of Commerce recognized: Elsinore ---- Randy Villanueva and Leanne Mobley; Temescal Canyon, Johnny Jimenez and Danica Reynolds; Tri-Valley CDS ---- Tyler O'Neill and Jasmin Toro; Lakeside ---- Kalvin Alpizar and Shanna Parker.
Murrieta Valley Chamber of Commerce students of the month are: Murrieta Valley ---- Whitley Porter and James Gudger; Vista Murrieta ---- Kenny Peterson and Alisha Strashem; Tenaja Canyon Academy ---- Jade Dreyer and Jessica Hayes.

STUDENT STANDOUTS
Student to attend D.C. conference
MURRIETA ---- Tekoa Sanders, a senior at Vista Murrieta High School, will attend the Presidential Classroom Scholars Program March 18 to 25 in Washington, D.C.
The weeklong program provides high school juniors and seniors access to the leaders who shape American policy. Students go behind the scenes in Washington, D.C., to see how policy is defined and how the three branches of government interact.
To qualify, students must be involved in their school and community and have a minimum 3.0 grade-point average.
Tekoa is a member of the National Society of High School Scholars and a member of the Students to Students Ambassador Program, through which she has traveled to Great Britain.
Students named to Dean's List
TEMECULA ---- Anna L. Millhiser of Temecula has been named to the fall semester Dean's List at Northeastern University in Boston. She is an English major.
Leah Joy Fisk and Amber Renee Lundgren, both of Temecula, were named to the autumn quarter Dean's List at Seattle Pacific University.
Katelyn Smith of Temecula was named to the Dean's List at Fairleigh Dickinson University in Madison, N.J. The name of the university was misspelled in a previously printed notice.
Vail Ranch recognize students
TEMECULA ---- Vail Ranch Middle School had its first semester Bulldog Pride luncheon last month, where teachers recognized students who demonstrated Bulldog Pride ---- personal responsibility, respect, integrity, determination and excellence.
The students ate lunch with the teacher who nominated them and received a certificate of achievement and a photograph with their teacher.
Students honored for the grading period were: Maggie Cheng, Carlos Soya, Jack Rees, Holly Caudell, Matthew Lucas, Karly Osborne, Michael Bussy, Kariss Perlas, Noah Murray, Bruce Renne, Adrian Ruelas, Kevin Hatch, Olivia Maybee, Dawson Martin, Jacey Birtcher, Brooke Eighmey, Mark Boltres, Jeff Cathers, Scotty Buntman and Nathan Holland.

Police announce poster winners
TEMECULA ---- The Temecula Police Department Traffic Division announced the winners of the Bicycle Safety Poster Contest at Margarita Middle School. The department is conducting poster contests at middle schools with the intent to make children aware of bicycle safety.
Jean Skinner was the winner of the competition, Kelsey Landazuri was second, Alex Carter third and Lorin Schrock fourth. First and second prizes are new bicycles and helmets. Third- and fourth-place finishers will receive bicycle helmets.
Chaparral High honors student athletes
TEMECULA ---- Chaparral High School honored Student Athletes of Character for January and February.
They were: Jordan Hinzman, Dan Arce, Stefanee Maurice, Laura Ptacek, Zach Merrill and Sally Heath.
Each week, coaches from all levels of in-season sports are given the opportunity to nominate their players for the honor.
Menifee science fair winners announced
MENIFEE ---- Menifee Union School District hosted its annual Science Fair on Feb. 16. Entries from across the district were submitted and assessed by a team of judges. Seven winners ---- Eiraina Schmolesky, Dylan Kryeger, Rian Blackwood, Llyacee Deshazer, Morgan Nunley, Ryan Newlin and Allyson Meyer ---- were selected to go on to the Riverside County Science Fair April 18 and 19.
Allyson Meyers, the 2005 district winner and an eighth-grader from Bell Mountain Middle School, wanted to figure out how to make cut flowers last longer. Comparing old wives' tale theories, such as adding sugar or aspirin to the water and modern day technology, adding the little packets of preservatives that come with the flowers, Allyson found a way to make flowers look freshly cut for at least seven days.
The county science fair will be open to the public April 19 at the National Orange Show in San Bernardino. Winners will go on to the state science fair in Los Angeles May 22 and 23.

Chaparral to continue 'Sweet Charity'
WILDOMAR ---- Chaparral High School will stage its final three performances of '"Sweet Charity" this week.
Due to a fire that destroyed the school's stage and costumes, performances will be at Elsinore High School at 7 p.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Admission is $10 or $8 with an Associated Student Body card or for seniors.
The show tells the story of Charity Hope Valentine, an optimistic ballroom dancer who searches for love, although her heart is repeatedly broken.
Elsinore High is at 21800 Canyon Drive.
Fundraiser to benefit children with autism
TEMECULA ---- A Temecula couple whose 4-year-old son has autism are hosting a fundraiser at Pechanga Resort & Casino on Saturday to raise money to combat the disease.
The event will take place in the resort's grand ballroom. The evening includes dinner, dancing, music, speakers who will talk about different aspects of autism, and a silent auction.
At least 160 items will be auctioned off, including a cruise to the Bahamas, weekend stays in places such as Santa Barbara and Newport Beach, the deed to a time share in Coronado, and gift baskets from local retail shops such as Wilson Creek Winery and Pechanga.
Proceeds will benefit the Temecula Valley Unified School District to assist with its efforts to educate children with autism and the Autism Research Institute.
The event it set for 5 p.m. to 11 p.m at the resort, 45000 Pechanga Parkway in Temecula. Tickets are $85 each and must be purchased in advance to participate in the auction. Organizers ask that all tickets be purchased by Wednesday via the Web site www.auctionforautism.com, or mail a check to Our Nicholas Foundation, 31805 Highway 79 South, #512, Temecula, CA, 92592.

Kid Power workshop set
MURRIETA ---- A free Kid Power workshop will be offered from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday at the Murrieta Valley Unified School District Parent Center at Avaxat Elementary School.
Children will learn safety awareness and self-defense skills. Classes are for children 5 to 12 and their parents or guardian.

Water district offers scholarship
PERRIS ---- Eastern Municipal and Rancho California water districts have joined other California water agencies in sponsoring a water industry scholarship program.
The program, entitled Water Scholar 2006, is designed to increase interest in water issues among high school, community college and university students.
The statewide campaign will award two $2,500 scholarships to students interested in a career in the water industry who are entering or attending an accredited four-year California college or university.
Applicants must be a California resident and will be required to complete an application, prepare an essay and respond to questions about water-oriented issues.

Cheer camp planned at Great Oak
TEMECULA ---- The Great Oak High School varsity cheer team will host a cheer clinic for current sixth-, seventh- and eight-grade grade students from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. April 15.
The $25 cost includes instruction, lunch and T-shirt.

Great Oak plans golf tourney
TEMECULA ---- The Great Oak High School Wolfpack Football team's second annual golf tournament and silent auction will be April 22 at Redhawk Golf Course.
The cost is $125 per player or $425 for teams of four, which includes golf, lunch and an awards dinner. Proceeds go to the football program.
The tournament will be a best-ball scramble format with check-in at 11 a.m. and tee off at 1 p.m.

Gardner receives technology grant
TEMECULA ---- Gardner Middle School has been awarded a $2,500 te@ch award from Best Buy for integrating interactive technology into it curriculum.
The funds will be used to enhance the inclusive education program, which works to ease positive relationships between children with disabilities and other children.
Best Buy started the program to reward schools that creatively integrate interactive technology into their curriculum.
