SAN DIEGO ---- While most of Charger Nation is worried about Drew Brees, it's the hot air from A.J. Smith and Marty Schottenheimer that has Dean Spanos concerned.
Brees, the team's Pro Bowl quarterback, will likely hit the free-agent market this week.
But last week, it was Spanos, the Chargers' president, hitting the fan regarding the squabbling between Smith, his general manager, and Schottenheimer, his head coach.
The acrimony between Smith and Schottenheimer reached a new high recently when published reports quoted Schottenheimer wondering if everyone in the organization was on the same page and how Schottenheimer lacked a strong line of communication with Smith.
Smith replied that he's in the business to win games ---- he's 25-24 as the Chargers' general manager ---- and not friends. He's chummy with few, with Schottenheimer certainly not among that small group.
What the pointed comments by Smith and Schottenheimer failed to do was win over a miffed Spanos.
So Saturday, Spanos brought them together, closed his office door overlooking the Chargers' practice fields and basically told them to knock it off.
Unfortunately for Chargers fans, Spanos has experience with disgruntled brass.
Some 10 years ago, his then-general manager, Bobby Beathard, and coach, Bobby Ross, meshed like oil and water.
Spanos, fresh from a Super Bowl appearance, was reluctant to intervene. When he did, it was too late for the pair to reconcile. Ross was forced out following the 1995 season and the Chargers haven't won a playoff game since.
Although Smith and Schottenheimer landed in Spanos' doghouse for yapping, they are tight-lipped about the situation with both declining interview requests.
Spanos, too, wasn't up to talking, although he did release a statement saying the controversy has "been dealt with, and the matter is now concluded."
Smith, who didn't hire Schottenheimer, has never enjoyed a warm relationship with the veteran coach. Schottenheimer, whose icy rapport with Redskins owner Daniel Snyder led to his firing after the 2001 season, has been out of the loop on some Chargers personnel moves. It's known Schottenheimer feels letting Brees go is a mistake, the opposite position of Smith.
What was obvious below the surface between the pair has found air. That's why Spanos was intent on clearing the air, before the critical free-agency period starts for a team he believes will go deep into next season's playoffs.
"I had several discussions with General Manager A.J. Smith and Coach Schottenheimer,'' Spanos' statement read.Ý "(Saturday) I met with the G.M. and coach together. I told them in no uncertain terms that I don't pay them to be friends.Ý I made it absolutely clear that I pay them to do their jobs.Ý
"I expect nothing less than the highest level of professionalism from both the coach and general manager. I expect both of them to pull in the same direction at all times, toward a Super Bowl for the Chargers. The three of us left the meeting in agreement and we will now move forward, together, as an organization."
Added Chargers spokesman Bill Johnston: "The statement is the only comment we are providing. Dean, A.J. and Marty are standing behind the statement.''

Bolt Believer wrote on Mar 7, 2006 11:47 AM:Even though Marty wanted Brees he will win with the new QB. I`m sure we will see some conservative play calling early on , but look out once Rivers gets up to speed. The swarming defense will keep us in games while LT, gates, Parker,Neal,McCardel & the up & comer,Quick, tall & sure handed Vincent Jackson give Rivers an awesome array of options . It won`t be long til Rivers is putting up 3-400 yards & LT is running for His rightly deserved rushing title! Tomorrow tomorrow the suns going to shine.... Show me your Lightning Bolts! Get off the couch & head out to the Q this season and witness something special Fill the stadium with blue & gold. And get loud!
baby wrote on Mar 7, 2006 12:06 PM:this may seem bad, but my opinion is it is marty's fault in the first place (re:brees situation)..if marty did not play him in that last game, which was completely meaningless, brees would not have been hurt (assuming) and he would have received his contract...but no, marty wanted to get 10 wins, who cares..we did not make the playoffs..it is like a homeless man wanting a BMW..it is great, but he wont be able to afford the monthly payments nor the gas...but marty is too concerned about his feelings..F*** marty. he is paid to coach, AJ is paid to GM, whether or not the two come together, is to be debated...so far, AJ has been holding up his end of the deal (except landing an OTackle and safety) but Marty has not upheld his end (crappy playoff loss, disappointing 2005 with more talent than SB winners Steelers) my feeling. i trust AJ much more than marty...plus, who was responsible for not retaining hudson houck?

Stan wrote on Mar 7, 2006 9:37 PM:Exactly what I was saying BABY!!!!!!! We didn't draft River's to sit on the bench for nothing. If you have to put the blame on this mess, don't blame AJ for it, blame Marty and Bree's for their bone head decision to play that last meaningless game, who in the hell would any player risk getting hurt and losing millions of dollars and a long term future with the team? (not me), If Bree's say's he wanted to be a Charger forever and all of his players say he's the best chance to lead this team to the SB ,how can he lead us there if he's not 100% and not here . If I was GM I would take the same approach that AJ's taking now. So all you Marty and Bree's fans this decision to become 10-6, instead of 9-6 wasn't worth bragging for! was it?!!.
Mike from Grover Beach wrote on Mar 8, 2006 9:11 AM:Marty is thinking like the res of us. Why mess with a good thing. Leting Drew Brees go will hurt this team. He has the belief from the whole team . The locker room presence he has is such a benefit. The Chargers will suffer if they let Brees go. Mark my words
Charger Fan wrote on Mar 8, 2006 10:55 AM:I'm with Marty, keep what will likely get you the furthest and that's Brees. They can afford to keep him why not? Keep a sure thing, if he doesn't work out trade him but you have to keep him another year. Rivers is not the win now option he's the win tomorrow option and this team is built to win now. I don't think Marty is going to put up with this for long. My prediction Rivers is a bust and Marty walks and the Chargers go back to their lossing ways because they don't want to pay for some insurance. Hooray to the G.M. and the Chargers leaving San Diego shortly after Brees and Marty leave.
John wrote on Mar 8, 2006 12:10 PM:Meaningless game? What the crap is a meaningless game? Players are paid to win games or die trying, thats the beauty of sports and heroes. You can say Marty wanted that 10th win, Bree's was an idiot for trying so hard to win, and the first teamers has no buisness being on the field... They went anyway to play and try to win, thats why they are the first teamers. I dont know if Rivers will be bad, or good, but I would have kept Brees just incase...even, if by chance, he doesnt heal at least he is there to talk some sense into the soon to be scared Rivers. Go Bolts, one way or the other!
KEVIN wrote on Mar 8, 2006 2:10 PM:i live in Ohio and have been a bolts fan since the late 70`s.I have suffered from afar for years.I like Drew, but I often question wether he`s a true franchise QB.He has alot of good qualities, but he always seems to make a bonehead mistake when weve got the talent to beat any blits or 8man front.WITH THE FIREPOWER HE HAS AT HIS DISPOSAL,he should eat teams alive. If Rivers does what I believe he`s capable of,we will be a team that can stretch the field out and give LT what he deserves, a rushing title!!!!
Sean C wrote on Mar 8, 2006 2:12 PM:Raider J, the Oakland Raiders in the 2007 NFL draft will be picking first after a perfect 0 & 16 season ha ha ha ha !! Long live Al Davis ! Al will probably use it on a kicker after Janikowski finally gets deported back to Poland. See you and the Prozac Nation at the Q and wear black , its appropriate for a team thats in mourning . But seriously do you think Oakland could get some players and make it a game its becoming boring to watch, ( five in a row, soon to be seven ). well, maybe not that boring. Hey I have an idea, being that you probably live in SD why don`t you get yourself a CHARGER jersey & pledge your allegiance to a winner! SD SD SD ! I suggest # 21 or # 56 .
