Chargers to bring safety in for visit

SAN DIEGO ---- With Chargers quarterback Drew Brees gone, it's time to see what free agents might blow into town.

Not long after the free-agency market opened Friday night, Chargers general manager A.J. Smith said the team will visit today with Carolina strong safety Marlon McCree.

"I'm excited about this because it's his first visit and that is very, very encouraging,'' Smith said. "There are no guarantees, but he'll fly in, we'll recruit him and then it comes down to business.''

McCree's agent, Gary Uberstine, said the Chargers aren't alone in chasing his client.

"We've had a tremendous amount of interest,'' Uberstine said.

The 5-foot-11, 202-pound McCree, who can play free and strong safety, led the Panthers with 88 tackles last year. The unrestricted free agent, who is entering his sixth season, started 15 games for Carolina after signing there as a free agent before the year.

"We love his versatility,'' Smith said.

Smith said he targeted three other free agents, but has already lost out on one: Saints Pro Bowl center LeCharles Bentley.

"He will not be coming in,'' Smith said. "My understanding is he is all set somewhere else.''

The other two players Smith contacted he declined to name, or their position.

Last year the Chargers weren't much of a force in the offseason signing frenzy, acquiring only free safety Bhawoh Jue.

The Chargers are in a position to spend freely, with nearly $25 million under the $102 million salary cap. But Smith doesn't anticipate a dramatic change in his roster.

Angling for McCree to upgrade the secondary isn't surprising as the Chargers' pass defense continued a disturbing trend with another sour showing last season. The team finished No. 28 against the pass despite a stout pass rush which produced 46 sacks, tied for fifth-most in the NFL.

The Chargers' patience hasn't been rewarded with the secondary. They burnt first-round picks on cornerbacks Quentin Jammer and Sammy Davis, and neither has distinguished themselves. Drayton Florence, another corner, and safety Terrence Kiel, are second-round selections but have produced mixed results.

If signed, McCree would supplant either Kiel or Jue.

In addition to Brees, the Chargers' unrestricted free agents are wide receiver Reche Caldwell, cornerback Jamar Fletcher, tight end Justin Peelle, offensive lineman Bob Hallen, defensive end DeQuincy Scott and linebacker Ben Leber.

Brees, a Pro Bowler and the NFL's comeback player of the year in 2004, is rebounding from a January shoulder surgery and will receive considerable attention. It's believed the Miami Dolphins and New Orleans Saints are among those inquiring about Brees.

"We've already got things lined up and we'll be rocking the minute the clock hits midnight,'' Brees said Friday afternoon.

Brees said Smith was eager to get backup Philip Rivers on the field.

"Did A.J. draft me? No,'' Brees said from Birmingham, Ala., where he is undergoing his rehabilitation. "Did A.J. draft Philip? Enough said.''

Smith said it came down to dollars and sense.

"We just couldn't agree about a price and value and it has just not happened,'' Smith said. "We absolutely wanted him back, but there was a value set by us and a value set by the player and agent and I understand that. It just didn't come together.''

Alex wrote on Mar 11, 2006 10:57 AM:Brees is another prima donna QB who feels he's worth more money than he actually is. I think A.J.'s right letting Brees test the market. Once Brees realizes he won't get as much money as he thinks he will he'll be back to sign the Chargers tender. The only problem being that some other desperate team (Miami, Detroit) might look at the potential and age of Brees, completely ignoring the uncertainty of the shoulder and overpay for his services. Worst case scenario Philip Rivers takes over and I'm certain he will be able to handle the "Trent Dilfer" role.

Bolt Believer wrote on Mar 11, 2006 2:22 PM:Did you happen to read Acee`s column in the Sunday UT, it is very informative. Brees says he is very "excited" regarding his free agent status, he also whined about his situation in SD where he was offered 2 mil guarranteed ( wwhether he started or even played this year or not ) along with incentives making it a very lucrative deal for "the little engine that could" Brees and his blood sucking agent were looking for a deal w/8 mil guarranteed. ( not gunna happen ). W/agents and visions of Benjamins stacked to the moon it is almost unheard of for a sought after player in todays sports market to sign a deal laden w/unknowns as Cuba Goodings character proclaimed "show me the money" so Brees will take the best offer available & laugh all the way to the bank ( and will probably build a quaint 10,000 sq ft cottage back in SD. Greed will eat itself and in this case Brees will be dining in the lap of luxury while his Superbowl dreams and his carreer stats fade off into the sunset. It is a sweet n` sour ending for Drew, but it opens up a bright new future for soon to be allpro QB Philip Rivers ,Put on your Maui Jims people - sit back & enjoy whats to be the the most exciting & talented team to grace the Q since Fouts n` Company, maybe ever!

Brees was offered a respectable & fair contract under the circumstances and it came down to Brees & agent Tom Condon refusing to sign for a chance of a higher denomination contract elsewhere. This proves A.J. Smith, for the Chargers was fair and practical without giving up the house. Everyone knows quality talent including A.J. Smith and it's Phillip Rivers turn to show us what he's got. I am convinced Rivers has the arm for an aerial display if Shottenheimer/Cam Cameron let him play to his strenghs. The signing of free agent safety Mcree is huge. A.J will then get two All-Pro Offensive Linemen. The chapter on Drew Brees is closed and the aerial bombardment of Phillip Rivers opens and about to begin.

Play to WIN wrote on Mar 12, 2006 12:25 PM:Instead of playing not to lose Charger GM takes bold stance & plays to win starting can`t lose prospect with Wolfpack blood coursing through his veins, Philip Rivers. The Manning family are shaking in their lingrie (like a Leaf on a tree in hurricane ravaged New Orleans); where the Little Feller has gone to chase his dream of wealth. Who can blame him, ya all would go for the dough as well. i
