Carrie Small of El Cajon holds up the winner of the Ugly Dog Contest at the Del Mar Fairgrounds Sunday.
Carrie Small of El Cajon holds up her Italian greyhound, Victoria, the winner of the 11th annual Del Mar Kiwanis Club's Ugly Dog Contest at the Del Mar Fairgrounds on Sunday. Small said she got Victoria from a dog rescue organization four years ago and was told the animal suffered from hydrocephalus, or fluid in the brain, and would live just two months.
A Chihuahua-pug mix named Cootie Bug, owned by Stacy Sorensen of Spring Valley, eyes its competition at the Ugly Dog Contest. The event, which offered 14 categories for dogs to enter, was a fundraiser for the Safehouse program at the Rancho Coastal Humane Society in Encinitas and the therapeutic riding program at the Helen Woodward Animal Center in Rancho Santa Fe.
A Mexican hairless pup named Rosita, owned by Nancy Gordon of San Diego, vied for a ribbon in the Dog Trick contest by retrieving a ringing cell phone. Rosita also entered the Best Costume contest.
A Neopolitan mastiff named Porthos from Encinitas snoozes while wearing a wig, skirt and tube top. Behind, a Great Dane named Buster, also from Encinitas, is mesmerized by a dish of nachos held by owner Robbin Miranda.
